I respectfully disagree....while I think these three categories are obviously ones that warrant an update, I have had success with waitlisting efforts for those who have increased an area of leadership or have expanded the international scope of their role at work (or for that matter, international scope within a community organization.)
For example, one of my clients started in January and he had become nominated to be the captain of his Community Soccer Organization. Submitted his update and was admitted as soon as the next round of evaluations came, in December.
That said I think it's something you should work on with a consultant, to receive outside feedback on whether it is update worthy, and yes sending frivolous updates, makes you look like you have poor judgement and could very well harm your chances.

MBAPrepCoach I do understand your point of view. There could always be an exceptional achievement that you would like to communicate with the school and you should definitely do so. But, most of the applicants feel that they are duty bound to send an update, which is a bad strategy. Furthermore, Waitlist doesn't necessarily mean that school expects an update from you. Having said that, you would never know if sending an update directly helped a candidate secure an admit. We both agree that sending frivolous updates would not add to one's chances and all the waitlisted applicants should keep this in mind.
