Finished with my interviews. Both were senior directors for fortune 500 companies and had moved from engineering to management. Very similar to what I am planning to do.
1st interview was at a country club over the weekend. The interviewer was very nice and asked me pretty standard questions. He was very interested in probing my reasons for INSEAD rather than a 2 year MBA. To most of my answers he would nod his head, say "it makes sense" or "I see your point". He asked me my reasons for moving back to India after working in US and Europe for 6 years. Rest of the time we spent discussing my extra curricular activities and what all his job entails. It was more of a conversation and I got very good vibes at the end of it.
He did say something interesting regarding the selection procedure. He had no idea how it works and said that it is possible that the AdCom has made it's decision on who to admit but are just going through the motions, or it's even possible that interviews are very very important. Basically he was trying to impress on me that no one really knows anything for sure. He said INSEAD doesn't let slip what number or percentage of people they admit after interviews so everything said online should be taken with a grain of salt.
The interview ran for about 1.5 hours. At the end I asked him if I could add him to my network on linkedin. He agreed and told me to call him or email him if I needed any information. He didn't give me any feedback about the interview, and I didn't ask.
2nd interview was at the interviewer's office at the end of the work day. He had asked me to send him my entire application. He was very gracious and brought me a selection of sodas because they were out of coffee. He asked me to tell him something about myself. After about 15 minutes of me speaking he said he knew my profile well. Turns out the 1st interviewer and him had been roommates at INSEAD and had exchanged notes about me. So he spent the next 45 minutes discussing his experience at INSEAD with me. He gave me some tips on how to tackle the exit language requirement, student loans and spoke lovingly about Singapore, the campus and the city-state. He started his MBA at Fontainebleau but spent P4 and P5 at Singapore.
He was one of the nicest people I have met, and I felt completely at ease talking to him even though he was at such a high position. At the end he asked me to keep in touch with him and told me he is
probably going to recommend me. He did say he would talk to his friend again about the interview before he sent the information in.
So all in all, a very good experience. I did think that I could have been clearer about some points in my first interview, but it is all water under the bridge now.
Now the wait begins. June 24th seems so far away!
those sound like great interviews. Thanks for sharing and good luck!
