still haven't been given an alternative interviewer to replace the one on maternity leave! and my other interviewer hasn't responded to my emails to set up an interview :( has anyone interviewing in London been able to schedule their interviews?

I'm based in LDN and have AM B as a coordinator. I had my first interview today, but haven't heard anything back from the other interviewer (it's been a week). I've tried to reach this other interviewer through every possible means (LinkedIn, Facebook etc). I've not had any luck getting in touch with her, but did in fact learn (through Linked In) that she's no longer at the job that INSEAD thought she was at. All of the contact details I was given are therefore out of date.

I've sent emails and left voice messages with INSEAD (AM B), but haven't heard anything back for 3 days now. Given the supposed deadline for interviews in next Monday, they appear to be cutting it pretty fine...

Anyway, I can only assume that INSEAD are aware of the issue and will contact me when they have a solution.

:)

I'm an R2 applicant for January 2012 intake. Could somebody please tell me what is the procedure for arranging recommendations. I can see there are two links provided and it says, I have to dispatch them to my recommenders. Does that simply mean, I copy these links and send to the official email addresses of my recommenders on my own? I wonder if my recommender has not started working on recommendation after receiving the link, doesn't it give me liberty to send the same link to the other person without INSEAD knowledge ?

Hi, as I recall you need to email each of the links given to you by INSEAD to each of your two recommenders. It's usually a good idea to prep your recommenders and give them a large amount of information to work with. Whilst they must certainly write the recommendations themselves, there's nothing untoward about stressing certain characteristics (leadership etc.) that you would like them to focus on.

It's a good idea to remind them of specific examples where you might have exhibited these qualities.

As you point out, there is nothing to stop you from colluding with your recommenders and writing your own recommendations. The AdCom might however recognise your writing style from your essays, so it's not worth the gamble - and more importantly it's just dishonest.

Hope this answers your questions.

Hi, I'm sorry but I guess you misunderstood my question. My question is more about the procedure than the concept. I didn't mean that I can write my own recommendation. My Question was how do we send the notification to the recommenders. Because as far as I know, From the other B school applications, You getnerally give your recommender's details on the website and then the AD-Com ( automatic message) sends the notification to your recommenders and You are no where involved personally. As opposed from that, In INSEAD it seems like that you have to send that link on your own ( instead of AD com sending it to them). Is my understanding correct? Also If I have the link, it means I can send that link to other recommender also (in case one recommender is busy) if the first recommender has not yet worked on that link. Is it also correct?
In summary, I found the method very different from other schoolsm here you have more liberty while in American schools all you can do is giving the name and email address of your recommenders and you never have access to the link, I hope I am clearer this time?

Hi, my apologies for the misunderstanding. Yes, INSEAD is different to other schools in this regard (from what I've noticed). Each link with be assigned to a specific recommender. It's up to you to then send the links.

So, the links will be different for the two recommenders. You can send them independently and the recommenders can work on them independently. If one recommender is taking longer, that will only affect that specific recommendation (related to that specific link).

Again, apologies for the initial misunderstanding. Hope this helps :)

He gave me some tips on how to tackle the exit language requirement, student loans and spoke lovingly about Singapore, the campus and the city-state. He started his MBA at Fontainebleau but spent P4 and P5 at Singapore.

hello,
this is a great account of your experience, I would appreciate it if you could elaborate on "He gave me some tips on how to tackle the exit language requirement, student loans and spoke lovingly about Singapore, the campus and the city-state." because i am planning to head to Singapore. Thanks.

Hey artectonic, I'll try to elaborate on my comment. I am not sure where you are from, but here in India everyone is generally tri-lingual. So I can speak/read/write English, and let us say language 'X' and 'Y', fluently. INSEAD has a requirement to have some sort of fluency in 2 languages when you start the program (one of which should be English) and basic aptitude in a 3rd business language when you finish the program.

Now, I was under the impression that neither 'X' nor 'Y' would count as a business language, and I had resigned myself to the fate of learning Dutch (which I know a little bit due to my expat assignment in Netherlands) or French (very very basic knowledge). But it turns out that I can use 'X' or 'Y' as my 3rd language and show aptitude in it by furnishing proof that I gave a high school exam and passed it with high marks.

The interviewer urged me to learn French in any case, but said if I declared 'X' as my native language and show my high school mark sheet for 'Y' - I'll have satisfied the requirements and thus won't have a sword hanging over my head to pass the language test. The academic curriculum is pretty rigorous as it is without having this add on.

Regarding Singapore, he mentioned that when he graduated in 2002 the market was pretty down. He got a job in Singapore and the government gave him permanent residency immediately because he graduated from Singapore - he didn't know if the policy still exists or not but told me it is worth investigating. He also said that even though pay scales in Singapore are slightly lower than Europe, due to the tax structure you end up with more money in hand. He was very happy with his stay in Singapore.

Hope that helps!

hey AnarchyzChild,
I too am from India, so hoping the langugage requirement would not be a big issue but I would love to take up french again and get fluent with it. Which campus are you planning for? Thanks for the info.

i was just speaking to a friend about this earlier today. it seems like they should be able to match it up with your name and date of birth. i plan on submitting my app within the next few days and was thinking of sending the supporting docs over the weekend.

if someone can clarify this for us it would be much appreciated. would also be worth knowing what other types of "supporting docs" people are sending through? i only have my transcript to send in, the gmat scores should have reached INSEAD directly.

thanks.

Here is the link the interviewer sent me. If the languages you know are in the list on this document, then you are in business.

I had clarified this from admission coordinator when I applied in R1. They would be able to match it up based on you name and date of birth.

In terms of documents , I had sent
- Transcripts
- Copy of GMAT Score Card [ Also arranged for Pearson Vue to submit the original test score ]
- A certified true copy of the degree certificate as well [ 'Transcript and DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE will be proof of your English proficiency' -> this is what she had written to me]

The last one was not mentioned on website , however since she had asked me to , I dispatched one.
Hope this helps !

Recollection of events since I got the email that I was pre-selected for the interview:

One day after the notification, I got an email with information about the alumni I need to contact to setup interviews.

After I contacted both alumni, one of them responded back within an hour that he will be out of the country for an extended period and won't be able to conduct the interview. Couple of hours later, my admission coordinator contacted me with the same news and told me that she will get back to me with an alternate. After 10 days, I got the information for the alternate interviewer. I contacted him and after couple of emails we agreed to meet at his office. I sent him my entire application package and shared the resume on the day of the interview. (Interview Q&A and deeets below)

(My other interviewer didn't reply to my email for exactly 10 days.) Seven days after I sent the email to my interviewer, I reached out to my admission coordinator to inquire if I have the right contact information as I haven't gotten a reply. She informed me that the alumnus is traveling and will contact me shortly. He contacted me after three days. I was cordial and asked which day and what time are most convenient for him. Keep this in mind that I work 70-80 hrs/week but I did my best to keep my schedule as flexible as possible. Two days later he emailed me that he will let me know next week what day works for him. I got an email a week later that he can meet on a certain date and place but no mention of the time. I inquired about the time but I didn't get a reply from till the day before in the late afternoon that he can meet the next morning at 10 a.m. It was impossible for me to get out of work at that time so I asked if we can push the meeting to a time later in the day. No reply! I didn't want to wait for another week for his reply so I ended up calling and asked if the later time works for him. He agreed hesitantly and was surprised that I couldn’t meet him at 10 a.m. After all, I should not care about the job I have because I’m trying to get into INSEAD. (Interview Q&A and deets below)

Interview 1 - Q&A and Deets

Since I work for the U.S. Army, he wanted my opinions and perspective about growing up in Pakistan and post 9/11 relationship between Muslims and American public. How it is different for me to be Muslims and working for the U.S. Army. We got into politics, media, emerging markets, current nuclear energy issues, and how my job relates to my future goals.

Why now, why MBA, Why INSEAD? I repeated what I wrote in my essays.

Accomplishments? I repeated what I wrote in my essays and added one more

Where do I see myself in 10, 20, 30 years? I laid out my plans from professional to personal.

Since I have so much on my plate, how do I find time to relax? My hobbies? I talked about working out daily, finding an hour or two day to just relax, have weekly dinner with friends, make time for family.

Why am I entrusted with so much responsibilities? I highlighted why my upper mgmt trusts me and how it is fun to be on my teams. Work hard, play hard!

What are my strengths? Repeated essays strengths and added one more.

How do I motivate my teams? people around me? I related back to my strengths and gave examples

Where do I want to work after graduation? related back to 10 years plan

What other schools I'm considering? Only insead and related back to why insead and why not any other school

My questions for interviewer were about his fav class, fav experience, ability to interact with professor away from classes, cultural opportunities, personal hobbies.

Over all, I felt it was a great conversation. We got to know each other on professional and personal levels. We talked about restaurants in the area and what kind of food like to cook and what we do in our off time. He complimented my leadership qualities and hinted that interview is only one part of the process but he hopes that I get in.

I wrote him a thank you note within couple of hours and related back to not only the conversation between us but also the conversation I had with his secretary in his presence. I didn't get a reply but he was traveling out of the country the next day so I'm sure he just got busy.

Interview 2 - Q&A and Deets.

Now before going in this interview I knew that I'm in for a ride. I got to the meeting cafe 30 mins before our meeting. I reviewed my resume, read over my application once again and played some games on my phone to relax myself.

Fifteen mins passed beyond the time we had agreed to meet and my interviewer was not there. I ended up calling him and found out that he totally forgot about the interview. He lived closed by so he said he will be there in 2 mins, then 5 mins and he got there in 20 mins. He said sorry that he forgot and I just said no problem, I understand. I asked if he needs to get a coffee or a drink. He asked me if I want something but I just said thanks I already have a coffee. He got a cup of coffee for himself and a snack for both of us.

He asked me how I found out about INSEAD and how much interaction I have had with alumni. I listed several alumni, current students and staff that I met throughout researching the school before I applied.

He asked me list 2-3 failures to which I repeated the one in my application and added 2 more. I was prepared for this question. I elaborated on what I learned through those failures and how I have made changes over time to not repeat the same mistakes.

He asked about if I have applied any where else? Same answer as Interview 1 that after conducting extensive research I believe that INSEAD is a right fit for me and I only want to attend INSEAD.

He asked me if I don't get in INSEAD what are my plans? I listed out my Plan B and then again said that I hope I get in INSEAD and hopefully jump start my vision on much more rapid pace.

He asked me about my family and my mothers health (mentioned in one of my essays). I told him about the medical challenges she is facing and how we as a family are addressing them.

INTERRUPTION # 1 - His cell phone rings and he ends up picking the phone. He had a brief a conversation in a language that he thought I didn't speak. After he hung up he apologized. I replied no problem in the language he spoke in. But internally I felt that it was extremely rude and unprofessional of him to pick his phone in the middle of the interview. It was a personal calls and he proceeded to tell me his friend is visiting and he needed something. I kept my composure and smiled. Asked if everything was okay?

After the interruption, he asked me a questions but before I could answer he started to tell me about himself and asked me if I have any questions for him. I asked the similar questions as in Interview 1.

All of sudden he asked me why I didn't apply to MIT or Wharton? I listed my reasons as why I didn't think those schools are good fit for me. But it was odd that he tried to convince me that I should looks else where too. I was little shocked so I asked if he thinks that I'm not a good fit for INSEAD. He quickly said that I'm a great fit but I should also look else where as it is very competitive.

INTERRUPTION # 2 - His cell phone rang again and he picked up again. Spoke in a third language so I won't understand the conversation. To his surprise I knew that language as well. Not fluent but I can understand the language. He put the person on the hold and gave me his card. Asked me to contact him if I have any more questions. At that point, he hung up on the person by saying that he will call back in 5 mins. It was a personal call as well. I was beyond shock at the level of unprofessionalism and rudeness.

I thank him for his time, walked him to his car and shook hands again saying thanks for his time.

Sad to say, I don't think it was great interview. I felt upset and disappointed. In my opinion the interview didn't take this process seriously and didn't respect me or my time.

I want to contact the adcom but not sure if that is a good idea.

Sorry for the long post and if I made any typos. Trying to give as detailed of an account as possible.

bnkhan, nice write-up... with the disclaimer that I am no expert at all and strictly for purposes of healthy discussion here, I personally think its not a good idea telling any interviewer a certain suggested time - 10 am - won't work... I think the second interviewer does seem to have some attitude 'issues' and showing a strong personality only made him play ball harder... I totally agree - taking 2 personal calls in the middle of the interview seems quite unprofessional....

Anyway, good luck with INSEAD...

MBAji - I was nice, I think. I told him that I have a meeting with clients that are traveling from a different city to come meet me and it is not enough time for me to cancel on them. Oh well, I want to get in but if I don't get in because of this person I will be very disappointed. I've a great and very unique profile but I'm just bummed.

bnkhan, that sounds polite enough to me... good luck... you never know what he put down on the form - it may have been positive - and how much 1 interview is even going to count for in the whole app package...

I applied R2 too... to those asking above, they match the name on your supporting docs to your application... Nothing else needed. Finally got the app complete email. I just sent transcripts and sent the GMAT score direct through Pearson VUE.

Hello,

I submitted my online app on May 29 and as per Fedex my transcripts were delievered on Jun 3rd. Any idea from here how long it takes for INSEAD to officially confirm that my app is complete?

Thing is if I get to know somehow that any part of the app is missing I can probably take remedial action (like posting the missing piece) and still make it to R2.
