FROM Insead Admissions Blog: Don’t fear the hurdle |
Don’t fear the application process! Win, lose or draw you’ll be a better person for it. I’m not saying it’s easy, far from it. But nothing worth doing, ever is. Obviously a great deal of effort goes into each element of the application process, but what isn’t widely recognized is the benefit that each candidate receives simply for having completed each hurdle. For example, writing my essays was an enlightening process. Why? Well let me start by saying that it’s remarkable how far you can go in life without really questioning what you want out of it. I mean REALLY questioning it and getting right into the nuts and bolts of the beast. The essay questions pitched by INSEAD are clearly designed to help the admissions committee understand what makes you tick – what happened in your life to make you the person you are, what are your aspirations and whether you have a plan to attain them. Once I had completed my first drafts, I stepped back and reread my work ready to applaud myself. I scored each essay a resounding ‘boring’ – generic, common and uninspired. To really differentiate myself I needed to show how I was unique and to do so I needed to understand myself better. I thought about what made me who I am, what were my strengths and weaknesses (and why) and I discussed these with those that knew me well. In some cases this meant new levels of honesty with people who we’re more professionally senior than me, and frankly that was scary. Reveling your inner workings to your manager takes courage but it revealed to me more about myself and perhaps more importantly, how others perceive me and so at every corner I grew a little more aware of whom I am. Whether its returning to standardized exams, dissecting your achievements through someone else’s eyes or fitting your life story into a paragraph, each hurdle in your application is a two-way process: putting your best foot forward and discovering more about yourself. Rereading the above it seems to come across as a bit overly optimistic but I can absolutely say that looking back on the experience I’m definitely richer for having being though it (scouts honor!). So if you’re just starting your b-school journey, don’t fret. All that blood, sweat and tears (and believe me there will be some of that last two) amounts to something. |
