Hi!

Please evaluate my profile for ISB PGP (2019 intake)

Female, 36 years, from Hyderabad

Academics
X---CBSE ---75%
Intermediate - 89.9%
B.E (Mechanical - Marine) Engg - 65%
MBA (Finance & IT Systems) - 70%

Work Experience
Currently I am working as a Senior Manager in a Telecom Company, with an overall of 12 years of experience in the same industry.

I need an advice as to what score of GMAT would help me in applying for ISB?
What are the critical aspects that are considered by the adcom when considering the candidates with 10+years of experience?
What are the chances for 10+ years of candidates getting placed in campus placements?

Hi N_A,

You've done well so far on academics, and a GMAT of 680+ should keep you safe. With 12 years of work experience, the burden of your application will be more on:
a) Demonstrating that you are professionally accomplished. In other words, what makes you better than your peers?
b) Since you already have an MBA, you will need to clearly articulate: why do you need another MBA? What are your goals and how does a PGP fit into them? Also, are your goals well-linked to what you have accomplished so far?

As far as placements are concerned, students with 8+ years of work experience are referred to as Senior Executives within ISB and are provided a special focus to help with their placements.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a discussion.

HI N_A,

Applying as a senior applicant essentially requires a few points to be addressed:

1. why do you need an MBA in this point in life?
2. How has your career progressed so far? (you will have to demonstrate that you were doing really well for yourself and never felt the need for an MBA earlier)
3. How will you add to the overall class experience?

Regarding placements, you will have to be realistic about your career goals. As an individual with considerable work experience in a sector/ function, its difficult to make drastic changes to your career, even after an MBA. And this fact has emerged several times when I have talked to students from ISB's senior executive club - the students who have difficulty finding jobs are the ones who want specific roles or considerable career changes. So do the research right now about what kind of career change/ career acceleration you can expect from the ISB MBA.

And also add the IIMs executive MBA programs in your consideration.

Hi N_A,

You read the placement report provided by ISB here: https://placement.isb.edu/profilebook/2017/PlacementReport2016.pdf
However, if placements are your concern then we recommend that you should do your own research specific to your goals. An easy approach would be to reach out to alumni with your background or those in the roles that you aspire for and then decide if the PGP will help you reach your goals.

Hope this helps.

Hi amdeep,

A good profile balanced well professionally and academically. The extracurriculars from college do seem a little dated though, you might want to work on that. Start-up experiences can come across as extremely powerful stories if you can articulate them well and demonstrate some real learnings. Since you're already in a marketing role, do go the extra mile to explain why do you think the PGP is necessary to achieve your goals.

We think that with a good application, you stand a good chance at ISB. You can also have a look at our guidelines for the essays: https://www.apphelp.co.in/ISB-Essays.htm

Hi All,

Please review my profile as well.

GMAT - YET TO GIVE
GRE - 321 (165QA) (Given in 2014)

Education -
X - 88%
Xll - 85%
B.Tech (CSE) - 70.4% (IP, Delhi)

Work Ex - 2.5~ Years
Consultant at Microsoft Hyderabad ( Completing 1 year in October) - Microsoft Dynamics 365
System Engineer at Infosys (1 year and 3 months)

So, I had a few questions to ask -

1. Should I apply with my GRE score in Round 1 ? or give GMAT and apply for Round 2 which would be difficult for me as I dont really have a stellar profile.
2. Also, if I just randomly apply with GRE in round 1. How does being a re applicant hamper my chances for next year with a GMAT score.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Utsav,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

I am an ISB alumni, CO14, and have been assisting applicants in their application journeys for the last 3 years. Below is debrief on your profile.

The fact that you are CA will definitely give you the diversity card. However, off late more and more CAs are applying to ISB. Hence, it becomes all the more critical for you to try to differentiate yourself in the pool of CAs. One way to do this would be to highlight your learnings from the venture you had started – the challenges, how did you overcome them, how did you bring business, what hacks did you employ and similar others. You can make a strong case for yourself by demonstrating the leadership and management qualities you gained in the process.

Another aspect you will need to focus on is your goals and why you need an MBA and that too from ISB. What will ISB give that you already don’t possess and how your current skillsets will complement that learning to get you to where you want to.

As far as GMAT is concerned, 680 is good enough for you to apply and have a realistic shot at ISB PGP.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to get in touch with me at +91-9701215544 or drop me an email at [email protected] in case you have any further questions or seek professional assistance.

Wish you the best

Cheers

Hi Mj,

I am an ISB alum and have been applicants in their admission journeys for the last 3 years.

Your experience and academic qualifications are extremely bright spots for the application. However, your GMAT score is slightly on the lower side. You will need to improve your score by 20-30 points to have a realistic shot.

I can share more feedback only after knowing further details of the roles and responsibilities you have handled so far and leadership traits you have demonstrated.

You will also need to be very specific on the topic of why you need a full time PGP program and not an Executive one.

Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] in case you have any further queries.

Thanks

that's too little info! Going by this, your work experience is on the lower side and you have not given any information about what you have done in these 2.5 years, what have you achieved and how is your performance as compared to peers.

Coming from the IT industry it will be super important to differentiate yourself. The details asked above will help you demonstrate that differentiation.
