Hi najathkodi,

You seem very young and I do understand the anxiety when one gets after scoring lesser than expected marks in the class 12th. But let me tell you this, your 10th grades do not matter so much, and getting 80+ in class 12th is not bad for ISB. Now about college choices, I would say do not drop a year and select a college that provides a good environment and lots of opportunities in ECs, community experiences, and many other ways through which you can develop professionally and personally. Also, see if the college provides good career options and placement opportunities for your goals, in your case Finance. While doing this, analyze the cost of pursuing education in these colleges and then after doing good cost-benefit analysis, go for a college. Best of luck for your future! :)

Cheers!
Kashish Garg,
Community Manager, MBA and Beyond

najathkodi
Hi I am someone who is standing at a very disadvantageous position academically right now, it has only been a few month since I got my 12th results. My goal now is to get into ISB and get a job in Corporate Finance or Asset Management. I know I have nothing to show I deserve to get an admission right now but I am doing my best to learn skills like Financial Modelling through MOOCS. I also hope to start CFA final year of UG. Right now I got admission at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics but I am still contemplating on whether it's worth the expense of living in Mumbai compared to doing my BBA from some college here.

Now my real dilemma right now is where I hope you can help as in which one of the options will help me land in ISB and how much weight does where I do my UG matter in applying for ISB.

My options are:

1) Drop this year and write improvement exam, improving just Economics by 20 marks will get me a 90% but I can likely do more. And apply for better colleges like Christ university or SJCC next year.

2)Attend a local college and do my best in studies and try to do summer internships, do CFA L1 final year.

3)Move to Mumbai and Attend Sydenham college and prepare for CFA L1 final year, also do relevant internships.

4)Take admission in any college and hope to get in to another college next year, this way I do not lose a year when I don't get into a better college.

Academics :

1. 12th - CBSE (Commerce) -86.4%
2. 10th - CBSE - 54%

Hobbies :
1.Reading about mainly Psychology, Investing, Filmmaking and Fiction novellas.
2.Air Rifle Shooting
3.Swing trading with paper (Hope to turn this real soon)
3.Learning about Filmmaking

Also do I have any chance at YLP PGP provided I score good in UG (BCom/BBA/BMS)

Thanks, I know I am asking too much of you but I literally have nobody to talk to right now. They are saying I am thinking too far into the future and I should get into whatever college and do my best at GMAT/CAT but as someone who is standing on the big disadvantage that is my 10th marks I have to be sure of what I am doing.

Hello Supremeleader,
It will be very difficult to comment on your profile without a valid GMAT score. I am also missing your post-MBA goals. It seems you have changed industry if not role from SBI to L&T. You will have to explain that in your essays. I am also missing your achievements, work description. Without any of this information it becomes extremely difficult to say what your chances are.

Hi Supremeleader,
Good, diverse profile overall. There are at least a few admits each year from the public sector banking domain. In addition, you have demonstrated enough efforts to signal your credentials for the analytical roles in BFSI. The extra-curricular section is a bit weak. Do aim for a 710+ on the Gmat.

All the best!

Cheers,
Manan

Hi everyone,

Would be really grateful if any of you could evaluate my profile for ISB - Batch of 2021.

I'm appearing for the GMAT in a few days and i'm aiming for a 700+ score.

Age-25
Xth - 9.4 GPA
XIIth - 90.2%
UG - B.A. LL.B(5 year Law) - National Law University - 8.5 GPA

Currently working at Desai & Diwanji(Corporate Law Firm) in the Gen Corp team with regular involvement in M&A transactions and corporate advisory. Would complete 2.5 years of work-ex by March 2021(Cut-off for ISB work-ex).

Would the limited work ex, ie. qualifying just the bare minimum of 2 years + be a negative in anyway?

Lastly, my extra curriculars include:

(1) Represented India in e-sports(FIFA) at the Asian Football Gaming Championship twice after winning the all India qualifiers. Won numerous e-sports tournaments conducted in India as well.
(2) Played Football at the national level(along with being a part of school and college teams throughout) and Table Tennis at the CBSE National Level.

Would be really grateful if any of you could evaluate my profile and if possible, give me a few pointers on where i stand and what i may be able to improve!
Thanks in advance :)

Hi Suhaas20,

Your stats seem great considering you achieve your targeted GMAT. For work-ex, I would say we have candidates with 2-3 years of work-ex going into top-notch schools like Insead but it's possible when you have exceptional work-experience exhibiting leadership, impact, fast career trajectory, etc. To assess your profile better, I need to know these details. Your ECs are great, just if you want to work on something, you may join some community service (its impact on your candidacy will depend on your current profile). Also, I would like to know what your post-MBA goals are? If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call sometimes this week to discuss some good schools and your chances in further detail.
Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hello Suhaas20,
Your academic record is good, and your profile is distinctive compared to most applicants. Your sports achievements will only add to these and make your profile very competitive. Make sure to bring out experiences from this part of your life into your essays. If you are able to get a GMAT score of 700+, then you should be good. Experience is not just a number in terms of years, but is also about quality. If you have made an impact in your two years of WE, talk about these and also your experiences from sport.
Make sure your essays encapsulate your achievements and leadership experience well and present a very cohesive story, tying into your post-MBA goals. Though I am missing your post-MBA goals here, please make sure you have ambitious yet attainable goals, and once which go well with your experience.
Hope this helps.

Hello HimadriPal,
You can apply with this score, or can retake GMAT if you feel you can score better. ISB has extended deadlines for submitting the GMAT score to Oct 31.
You profile is distinctive but you need to focus on your post-MBA goals, and how an MBA from ISB will help you achieve that. Bring out experiences of leadership from your WE and how these connect well with your post-MBA goals.
