When are you planning to apply? Because 16 months are quite less and if I assume you are planning to apply for 2021 intake, it will be around two years which still are less for ISB or any other reputed foreign business schools. If you wish to apply for 2021 intake, either your work-ex should be very very strong or you should look for other top-notch Indian schools like IIMs. Let me know your plans. Cheers!

Hi
Your overall profile looks quite good. Your stats are great with an above-average GMAT. Being the president of the debate club must provide you with an ample number of opportunities to be part of big MUNs and other reputed debate competitions and inculcate in you a great leader. But I am not sure about your work experience. How many months/years of experience do you have? And when are you thinking of applying to ISB and which program is it(deferred or full-time)? Once I have this knowledge and other important details of your work-ex, I will be able to provide you with a more comprehensive evaluation.

Cheers!

Hi,

Wanted to get a word of advice on my profile for ISB

1. Acads - 95% Class 10th, 92% Class 12th, UG - 6.69 (First division) (Amity University, Noida)
2. Work Experience - 8 months as an analyst at a management consulting startup, presently working at a product based startup providing e-mobility services as a marketing & product analyst.
3. GMAT Score - 718
4. Extracurriculars - State level debate competition runner up, president of the college debate club.
5. Goals - With a focused interest in the field of finance, economics, a knack for case studies, and being an orator, I wish to dive into the world of management consulting and help businesses solve their problems!

Experts, kindly let me know your review of my profile!

Thank you for your reply!

1. Details about my work experience - Total work experience of 16 months to date. Includes 8 months as a business analyst at a management consulting startup and another 8 months (to date) as a marketing and product analyst at an e-mobility startup. I am looking to join ISB for the full-time MBA program.

2. Yes, I have been a part of MUNs a multiple number of times with varying positions of responsibilities.

3. Also, an additional question - Is this kind of a profile acceptable for any reputed foreign B-school?

Thanks in advance!

Again, thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, I am indeed planning to go for the 2021 intake and have my eyes set on the third rounds of some B-schools abroad and ISB.

Hi,

I have posted my profile details below. I'd be really grateful if you can give me an assessment of the profile and my fit for ISB. Already applied for R1 taking exception of GMAT score reporting until Oct 31. But due to less score, I want to report a GRE score.

1) Gender: Male

2) Nationality: Indian

3) Age: 25

4) GRE Score: 298(Q-157, V-141, AWA- 3)

5) Education: Btech. in Computer Science

6) UG Grade: First class (6.95/10)

7) School Grades: X: 90%, XII: 89.1%

8) Work experience: As of now, I have a total of 4.3 years of work experience. I am a mobile apps analyst at one top OS company and have had extensive experience in mobile apps development and 9months of experience in blockchain. Two awards at the workplace for performance-related. Top annual rating for 2 consecutive years.

EC's -

- Worked as Microsoft Student Associate and Partner for 2 years in college days.
- Got patent approval from Govt of India for an application design.

PS: with the above profile I got admits into New York University (NYU) for Management of Technology program, Fall 2020, and Northeastern University MEM program, Spring 2021. But due to COVID treatment, I missed those admits. So I am thinking whether the above profile works for the ISB PGP program.

Hi,

as you have already applied to ISB, let's wait and watch for your result. If you are planning to apply to foreign MBA programs, I would suggest retaking GRE/ GMAT and applying with a higher GMAT/GRE score. This is crucial because even your undergrad score is not high.
Your ECAs are a little light. Although I am not certain if you could do something meaningful in the next two months.

Hi ayushc15,

Good acads (VIT is a good brand and a lot of alums hail from there) and extra-curricular, especially the TM bit which is directly relevant for ISB (there's a very active TM club).
While the work-ex (the firm and role) seem standard Indian IT male, if the initiative you're leading is prominent enough, it does add value to your candidature. However, the GRE score is low for this profile, especially as an EEO. Since there is time till the r2 deadline, I would suggest re-taking it and trying to improve by 4-5 points.

Couldn't get a sense of your post-PGP goals.

Cheers,

Hi poorna101,

Prima facie, you need to re-take the GMAT. Although ISB has shortlisted candidates below this score, their profiles are far more diverse than what you bring to the table.
Could you elaborate a bit more on the role, social sector experience and your goals post PGP?

Hi Manan,

Regarding work ex:

I've worked in various divisions of Sales in the last 6.5 years (7 come July) in multiple markets across the globe. It has ranged from Inbound SDR /AE/SMB sales to Enterprise sales and Account Management for both. My role has generally been in piloting a particular sales type for a region, setting it up from 0 to 20 in each region and moving forth. One of the few women to pilot roles in the org. My VP Sales and CEO will be ones writing recommendations for me.

Regarding Social work ex:

Was a part of an NGO for 2 years. Renovated Balvadis in the slums so that children can go to school there and teaching women English so that they could enhance their quality of their lives. I taught English and Math to kids too.

Post MBA:
I would like to go from SaaS sales to SaaS Product Management. I have already started preparing for that in other ways but do believe that an MBA from ISB would benefit me.

I can give the GMAT again but given the time constraint to apply I'm not too sure if my score will cross 700.

What do you think ?

I'd strongly recommend retaking the GMAT . With the first attempt 3 years ago, the adcom would definitely want to see a more recent effort. Also your GPA is a little low and your work experience is similar to many other applicants.
with two months before the deadline, you can study plus also work upon your applications. Consider taking the help of professionals who can help you do well on both fronts.

Hi NISHA55

Your profile seems quite interesting. Would need more context into your e-commerce venture, and want to understand your role within it better.

You can certainly aspire for ISB, and for multiple schools in the 5-15 range in the US.

Hello NISHA55

Thank you for sharing your profile.

I am an Indian School of Business alum, CO14, and have been assisting applicants get into global business schools for the last 5 years. Below is my evaluation of your profile:

Academics: Average; You will have to compensate for the low undergraduate score with other elements of your profile.

Professional Work Experience:

• Length: Good; usually the average of class lies between 3-5 years.

• Quality: Average; you did not mention how good your business has been. I am assuming you had success in your venture and you have a clear goal hence you are keen to go for MBA.

Extracurricular: Please share some activities you have been involved in, you have to justify the low score in undergrad and having an impressive extracurricular makes up for it.

GMAT: Above Average; 750 is very good score and puts you in top percentile. You can present it as one of the strengths while submitting your profile to B-schools it’ll boost your candidature.

Overall: I believe your profile has a number of sparks in it to get the attention of the admission committee. However, you will need to demonstrate how you add value to the classroom basis your diverse experiences. Your post-MBA goals should be clear. Traditionally, Management trainee and E-commerece are different industries. Hence, you need to be absolutely logical in how your work experience can help you with your company and how B-school can bridge the gap.

Hello ayushc15,

Thank you for sharing your profile.

I am an Indian School of Business alum, CO14, and have been assisting applicants get into global business schools for the last 5 years. Below is my evaluation of your profile:

Academics: Average; As you’re part of the over-represented group i.e. Male Engineer, it has to be compensated by other parts of your application.

Professional Work Experience: Good; as an early applicant your company and your role at the company matters a lot.

Extracurricular: If possible show some recognized certificates/achievements to validate your time spent in the activities in addition to what you have mentioned.

GRE: Average; you do not need to retake GRE but other parts of your application need to be focused more. If possible consider taking the GMAT, not a hard requirement.

Overall: You have a good profile with a decent GRE score. However, you’ll have to explain your goals post MBA and how you can add value and diversity to the classroom.

But due to COVID treatment, I missed NYU admit. So I am thinking whether the above profile works for the ISB PGP program.

Hi thehawkeye,

Looking at your profile, the first thing that I would like to address here is your undergraduate GPA grade of 6.95 which is slightly on the lower end so to counter this you will have to pose the right alibi by highlighting how you were more inclined towards grooming your profile holistically through extracurricular activities. Furthermore, you have mentioned your GRE score of 298 which, to be very honest, is not a very competitive score, which is why I would recommend you to retake your GRE exam and aim for at least a 315-320 to boost your chances of acceptance at a top-notch school like ISB.

Furthermore, you have mentioned that you worked as the Microsoft student associate and partner during your undergraduate years and you also received patent approval from the government of India for an application design. Both these endeavours showcase your proactiveness and ability to take on initiatives while leading from the front, traits b-schools most certainly valu. However this is not enough to win the trust of the admission committee, you need to provide more relevant information regarding your extracurricular participation since schools are looking for a holistically developed profile. Here you should definitely shed some light on the same to showcase how you went above and beyond in your endeavours and how you will be a great value addition to the school. To give you a brief idea of how to go about with this, you can additionally talk about the clubs and associations you were involved in, the teams you led and most importantly your volunteering activities along with NGOs works. This part of your profile will basically highlight your soft skills paired with your social skills which will ultimately portray you as an all rounder possessing the capability of being a great future leader.

In addition to the above suggestions, you can also take up various specialised certifications in the field you want to pursue your career in to further build your profile.

Talking about your work experience, you have a decent amount of work experience as a mobile app analyst and developer and a brief experience in the blockchain business. This diverse set of work experience is definitely praiseworthy and makes you stand out from the crowd. However, since you will still be facing a lot of competition from applicants who have worked in the big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE and PWC, you need to set yourself at par with your competitors by highlighting why you chose to work in these companies, the kind of projects you handled, the value you added to these projects, the skills you gained and the major takeaways you were able to attain from the same.

Coming to your main dilemma of whether your profile fulfils all the requirements for admission at ISB for the PGP program, well the PGP program is an equivalent to an MBA program which is way different from your MEM and Management Technology program. An MBA program is one of the most demanding and popular masters courses out there with a lot more competition than any other management programs. So to get an admit in a PGP program at ISB would not be an easy task unless you back your profile with a very strong GRE score and application.

Your application would play a huge role in enhancing your chances of getting accepted into your target school, hence, you would need to highlight your profile USP’s and how you can be a great addition to the school whilst posing the right examples to legitimize your claim. Additionally, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile since your application will hold a 30% value in the selection procedure.

WORK EXPERIENCE - 1 year management trainee in an MNC and then I ventured out on my own.I have been leading an E-commerce Company, which I have founded 4 years back.I need to expand my business and think an MBA from Isb would be instrumental in helping me reach my goals.

Kindly illuminate me on my chances of getting an admit and what all options,if any, I have to target the top 5th-15th Business Schools in USA.

Hey NISHA55,

I would like to start off by saying that you have a pretty decent profile.

Starting off with your academics, You have a pretty strong academic background. You have a relevant undergrad degree from one of the top 10 universities in the country which definitely adds a lot of value to your profile. However, your GPA does fall on the short end, so you might want to overshadow this by drawing attention towards the other strong aspects of your profile. One strong proof of your academic abilities is your GMAT score. A score of 750 highlights your academic prowess and not only vouches for your excellent academic skills but would also allow you to target all of the top Business schools in the world.

Further, on the note of extracurriculars, you must be cognizant of the fact that schools seek applicants having a holistic profile . Hence, accounting for the same, you can take up some volunteering activities or join a business/ finance club. Extracurriculars are a great way to showcase your skills like leadership, networking, communication skills, etc. Thus, you must get your hands on some extracurricular engagements/initiatives to strengthen your profile.

Coming on to your work experience, the details provided are pretty vague. You have worked in an MNC for a year, but haven’t mentioned its name hence i can’t comment on its brand value and relevance. Other than that, you have entrepreneurial experience, which definitely bolsters your profile by providing you with a wide spectrum of business acumen and skills. Here, talking about the roles and responsibilities you undertook, the projects you led and the impact you created during your stints would allow you to establish yourself as a strong candidate.

It is difficult to gauge how much work experience you actually have, but on an average MBA programs require a work experience of minimum of 4 years in a managerial position or role.

Since MBA programs rely heavily on the quality of work experience and the details you’ve provided fail to give a clear picture of the same, my opinion on your rate of acceptance of ISB MBA, wouldn’t be accurate. That said, to give you a brief about the program, it most certainly falls under the upper competitive category and judging from the details you’ve provided, you roughly stand a 50-60% chance of getting admitted into the school, provided you back your profile with a strong application that depicts your strengths and overshadows your weaknesses.

In order to gain deeper insights into where you stand amongst the competition, I would suggest you to take up our free profile evaluation that will also provide you tips on strengthening your profile and a personalized list of schools you can be targeting.
