Thanks a lot for your revert. To answer your questions - Yes, I am working in front-end Investment Bank in Infrastructure and Energy Sector. Secondly, my co-curriculars include the following -
- Won ‘High Commendation Award’ in SRCC Model United Nations
- Participated in various debate competitions and recitation competitions at school level and college level
- Was the "Master of Ceremonies" at a number of events at my previous organisation

Could you please also let me know if my profile is good enough for targeting top 15-20 International colleges as well.

Hello Mehakpreet,

While a little improvement in the GMAT (730+) will help improve prospects, with your profile, even with the 710 you will have a fair chance at some of the top 20 schools if carefully chosen. This year R2 will be particularly challenging due to a high number of deferrals and increase in R1 applications at top schools. Hence, choosing programs smartly based on your profile fit, career goals, intake size, deadlines, etc. will hold the key.

If you would like to speak more in detail, you can schedule a complimentary counselling call with me here: https://calendly.com/sanjay-dhingra/cou ... g-calendar

Best,

Hello Gmat202023,

Here are my quick comments: Your academic scores while decent, will still put you in the average bucket according to ISB's 5-point grading scale (P.S: ISB only looks at Class 12 & UG). Hence, you will surely need a higher GRE score to have a fair chance at securing a R2 admit this year. Do aim to cross the current class average of 327 (higher the better).

We will need more details of your work responsibilities & achievements to comment on the profile. For a free profile evaluation, you can email us your updated resume / LinkedIn profile link at: [email protected]

Best,
Sanjay

According to me, the challenges with my profile are -
1. Changing work profiles
Hi Mehakpreet, gone are those days when the expectation was that you join a job as a fresher and then retire from that job after putting in 30-40 years to the cause of that job.

With just 3.5 years of experience that you have, the expectation is that you experiment a bit with the various profiles, to discover your likes and dislikes. In fact, since all your experiences so far have been related to accounts/finance, I would not even call these experiences as inconsistent job experiences or changing work profiles.

Hence, this is really the last thing that you need to be worried about as well as your profile is concerned.

Your GMAT score, your undergrad degree, your alma mater and your work-experiences are all emitting positive vibes. Make sure you capitalize on these strengths, but crafting an immaculate application, and you should be in!

Hi akshaymalpani,
Overall, a very good profile and Gmat (previous attempt won't matter). I'm sure there are a lot of stories to tell in the application on how you dealt with the pandemic at the hospital. Having partly done so within my family's setup, I can imagine how difficult it must be to manage the administration. Kudos for that!

For ISB, the profile's absolutely fine (acads, diversity, extra-curricular, etc. Won't go into the details. The key element is to highlight your post-PGP plans- going back to the family setup or doing something outside? If former, then be ready to cover why not the MFAB program at ISB.

Cheers,

Hi akshaymalpani,

Your profile seems good to go. No major red flags.

Of course, building a logical connection between your current experience (mainly hospital administration) and post MBA career goals will be required, but that can be tackled during story-boarding. ISB as a school is understanding of life situations and will not penalize you for decisions necessitated due to circumstances beyond your control. Hence, no reason for you to hesitate.

All the best!

Best,
Sanjay

Thanks Manan for your reply. I do want to expand beyond my family business. I am interested in seeking opportunities that are not necessarily within my family business sphere even if it means leaving the family business and pursuing a new field. In that sense, I feel that MFAB program may not align with my interests. I'm exploring US schools as well but I've heard great things about ISB. Again, thanks for your advise!

I believe having an MBA will help me gain exposure on these aspects which are crucial to sustain in the market and also help me build my network of contacts which definitely plays a very important factor in business.

Hey BhavanaKotte,

Starting off with your academics, your undergraduate scores do fall on the shorter end of the spectrum. But you can always negate that by drawing the focus on the stronger aspects of your profile such as extracurricular activities and internship experiences.

When it comes to your work experience, you definitely have an extensive work experience which will allow you to target the MBA program. Your internship at BEL showcases your proactive attitude and the determination to put your theoretical knowledge into practice to gain a hands on learning experience. Afterwards your two stints at Satyam ventures and Nleagues technology highlight a steady growth in your skills and position.

One important factor lacking in your profile however is the association with a big brand name. For getting into a competitive program such as ISB MBA, you’d be facing competition from candidates from the big 4 companies. Here, talking about the quality of your work experience by highlighting your leadership roles and responsibilities, the kind of projects you led and the impact you created during your stint would help you establish yourself as no less than a big4 candidate.

You have a fair share of extracurricular in your profile as well. Your Teach for India initiative showcases a deep understanding of societal issues and how you have utilized your skills to bring forth a positive change in society. Serving as a treasurer for the Rotaract club displays your financial skills, participating in sports highlights your grit and determination while delving into classical music shows your artistic flair.

All in all I would say these activities make your profile pretty holistic. However, as there is no timeline mentioned, it is difficult to gauge how recent these activities are. Since you are applying to an MBA program, activities that are too old will lose their relevance and significance. Hence, you can either take up some certifications in the business domain such as Six Sigma or CFA or take part in your companies CSR initiatives to further build your profile on this front.

When it comes to GMAT, for ISB you should get a minimum score of 700 - the higher the better. Since your undergrad score falls on the lower end and you have an engineering background, getting a high GMAT score will not only compensate for the low GPA but also authenticate your candidature for the business program.

Given your school choice, ISB falls in the upper competitive category. Hence you stand a 50-60% chance of getting into the program. However, while applying for international business schools, it’s always a better strategy to hedge your bets wisely and apply it to a mixed bunch of 6-7 schools that would drastically increase your chances of acceptance.

Given your decent profile, you can target the following schools from the dream, competitive, and safe category.
Dream: HEC, LBS, INSEAD, NYU, Duke
Competitive: WHU, FSFM, Essec, ESCP
Safe: Grenoble, Skema, Esade

Since it seems like you are still in the early stages of your application, you must be looking for some professional help to guide you through the application process of top business schools in the world. Hence, I’d suggest you to book a free consultation call with our expert consultants who would clear any doubts you may have regarding the admission process and would help you chalk out a winning strategy that would definitely get you an admission in your dream school.

Hi,

Please review my profile.

GRE : 321 ( Quant : 168, Verbal : 153 )
12th : 86% ( Science )
10th : 90.4%
B.Tech : Electrical and Electronics engineering, MIT Manipal, 8.12 GPA

Experience : More than 5 years with experience in procurement and contracts, commissioning and maintenance for electrical and instrumentation projects for Jamnagar plant of Reliance Industries Limited.

Extra-curricular : Part of the publicity and logistics team and Publicity and logistics head at IEEE student branch Manipal.

Hey Gmat202023,

To start off with the strong suits of your profile, your GPA of 8.12 is very impressive and showcases your academic prowess and strong technical skills. You can complement this further by talking about projects, assignments undertaken, and also the experience gained through technical internships.

addition to this, another significant aspect that schools focus on is extracurricular activities as they are looking for a comprehensive profile. Hence, it is essential to shed some light on the endeavors taken up at any clubs, associations, sports, fest, or events you managed or participated in during your undergraduate. Volunteering initiatives, certifications, or internships undertaken during the course of your study would also count towards your extracurricular initiatives. On this note, you’ve mentioned extra-curricular activities that you did during your undergraduate which seems pretty noteworthy, however, since you have graduated 5 years back, it is recommended to mention activities that you have pursued recently.

Make sure you emphasize on what events you have led, what were your roles and responsibilities, what were your major takeaways. This will help you showcase a holistically developed profile and would vouch for you being an apt candidate for the school.

Moving to your professional front, you have worked for 5 years at Reliance Industries Limited wherein you’ve been involved in various roles, like procurement and contracts, commissioning and maintenance for electrical and instrumentation projects gaining an all rounded exposure, which is pretty impressive. Although it is a big brand, since most of your competition will be from the candidates who have experience of Big 4 firms, you need to leverage the learnings from these roles to stand at par with the competition you’d be facing.

Make sure you explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Highlight why you chose these internships, what are the projects done so far, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took, and any kind of impact created to establish a connection with your goals, and portray the knowledge gained from these experiences. Explaining this well can be a differentiator for you, and help you stand out in a crowd.

To boost your profile, you can further highlight CSR activities to showcase responsibilities taken up and the impacts created by you. This will help portray the socially responsible side of your personality and convince the adcoms of your abilities to be a great future leader. I’d suggest you begin working on this aspect if you lack experience in this sector.

Speaking of your GRE score, 321 is really competitive. This score will widen your scope to get admissions in top-notch B-schools.
Given your school choice, ISB falls in the upper competitive category. Hence you stand a 50-60% chance of getting into the program. However, while applying for international business schools, it’s always a better strategy to hedge your bets wisely and apply to a mixed bunch of 6-7 schools that would drastically increase your chances of acceptance.

Here is a mixed set of dream and competitive schools that you can be looking at:
DREAM: INSEAD, Duke, LBS, HEC
COMPETITIVE: FSFM, IE, USC Marshall, ESMT

In the dream category schools your chance of acceptance will be 50% chance whereas for the competitive category 60-70% will be your chance of acceptance.

Lastly, while you have a good profile, you need to be aware that you will be facing competition from equally good or even better profiles, which is why, you need to complement your profile with a strong application that includes essays, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose, and resume that highlights all your strong suits, gives reasoning for the weaknesses, and displays how you’d be a good addition to the cohort. As a matter of fact, your application can boost your chances of acceptance by 3x!

Hi. Please review my profile for ISB.

Age : 27
Gender : Female

Scores :
Class X - 90%
Class XII - 96.25%
Bcom (H) - 82%
GMAT - 710

Qualifications :
Bcom (H) from SRCC
Chartered Accountant
CFA Level 3 candidate

Work Experience : Total 3.5 years post Chartered Accountancy (6.5 years if articleship period is counted as a work-ex)
1 year : Grant Thornton (Audit)
1 year : EY (M&A Tax)
1.5 years : Investment Banking (Infra Sector) (Designation - Analyst)

Co-Curricular : Diverse, mostly surrounding public speaking. But no expertise per se.

According to me, the challenges with my profile are -
1. Changing work profiles
2. Low designation at work (will make it difficult for me to highlight my leadership skills)
3. Non-serious / strong co-curriculars

Would really appreciate if someone can evaluate my profile. This would give me good head-start for my applications.

Thanks.

Hey Mehakpreet,

You have a pretty great profile.

Academically, you have a great GPA & GMAT score, which showcases your academic prowess and since SRCC is one of the top colleges in the country, the brand of your undergraduate college vouches for the capability and skills you possess. Moreover, your additional certifications in CA and CFA are great value additions as they showcase your proactiveness to learn and grow and act as further testament to your academic skills.

However, while your grades and brand do play an important part, you should highlight your extracurricular activities and other endeavours because schools are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. That said, your participation in extracurriculars is most certainly bland, to remedy which, you could take up certifications or get involved in CSR activities to bolster your extracurriculars and build a holistic profile.

As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 6 years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants. You have a pretty varied work profile and you have two big brands on your CV which works in your favour. Now in order to differentiate yourself, you ought to explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Highlight why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took and any kind of impact created to establish a connection with your goals and portray the knowledge gained from these experiences.

Coming on to address your concerns, you have worked for at least a year at each of the firms and hence you can showcase how you changed jobs in an effort to chase after growth and development. Talking about how you have been chasing learnings and development of a diverse skill set would help you here. Moreover, talking about low designations, you could talk about your work as part of teams and the various projects you took up, the impacts you created and the contributions you made. These would put you at part with the other applicants with even more extensive work experience.Just ensure that you clearly bring to light the skills and knowledge you’ve gained in the process as growth is highly appreciated by the adcoms.

Talking about the school you are targeting, according to your profile you have a 50-60% at ISB. To increase your chances of getting admitted, you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application consisting of well-drafted Essays, LORs and resume to back your profile. You need to showcase your journey, highlight your strengths, overshadow your weaknesses, what makes you different from your peers and how you are a great value addition to the school. A strong application increases your chances of acceptance by upto 30%.

Moreover, it is always advised to hedge your bets wisely and apply to a good mix of schools. That said, according to your profile I've suggested a few schools that you could be targeting according to the different categories.

Dream : HEC , INSEAD, LBS, Duke, NYU, Cornell
Competitive : ESCP, ESSEC, ESADE, FSFM, IE, WHU

Hey akshaymalpani,

Beginning your evaluation with your academic background, your percentage 68.85 is a bit on the lower end. To remedy this, you would need to pose the right alibi and divert attention towards other aspects of your profile such as your extracurriculars, projects, internships and GMAT score.
Talking about GMAT score, a 730 is most certainly impressive and acts as proof of your academic capabilities. It also widens your scope of getting into premiere business schools.

Another significant aspect that schools focus on is extracurricular activities as they are looking for a comprehensive profile. Hence, it is essential to shed some light on the endeavours taken up at any clubs, associations, sports, fest, or events you managed or participated in during your undergraduate. Volunteering initiatives, certifications, or internships undertaken during the course of your study would also count towards your extracurricular initiatives. Herein, you have a good amount of extra-curricular activities. From publishing articles to being a part of various committees in college, you have ample activities that showcase your versatility and proactive nature. So, make sure you emphasize on what events you have led, what were your roles and responsibilities and what were your major takeaways. Elaborating on this will showcase a holistically developed profile and would vouch for you being an apt candidate for the school.

Moving on to your professional front, you hold 2 years of work experience which is pretty decent,. however, given your aspiration for an MBA, 2 years experience falls short as you will be competing against applicants who have an average work experience of 4-5 years from Big 4 firms. In such a case, in order to stand at par with your competition, you need to leverage the learnings from these roles and responsibilities you undertook and make sure you explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Eventually the intensity of your skills and knowledge will help differentiate you from the crowd.

Further given your school choice, ISB is highly competitive, therefore, your chances of acceptance will be 40-50%. Hence, it is never a good idea to apply for just one school. You should always hedge your bets wisely and go for a mixed bunch of dream, competitive, and safe schools. Thus, I’d recommend you to take our free profile evaluation service that could help you to get more insights into the B-schools and courses that will be compatible with your profile.

The link of our FREE PROFILE EVALUATION SERVICE is given below:

Lastly, while you have a good profile, you need to be aware that you will be facing competition from equally good or even better profiles, which is why, you need to complement your profile with a strong application that include essays, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose, and resume that highlights all your strong suits, gives reasoning for the weaknesses and displays how you’d be a good addition to the cohort.
