Answer for the question should be 'A'

Reasoning:Patriarchal in nature complementing tribes so C,D are out. A,B,E remains. B & E are out because society is not adhering its tribes who are.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

The clause 'patriarchal in nature' modifies the 'tribal societies'. So the underlined portion must begin with 'tribal societies.

Option C and D are out.
Option E is listing the character of the nature of the tribal society which is not the intended meaning.

Per the intended meaning, the tribes have a traditional structure and they strictly adhere to the traditional structure.

Thus Option B perfectly fits the bet.

Final choice B.

Patriarchal in nature, with a strong emphasis on the role of the ancestors in their day to day lives, the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas.

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas

The non-underline part in the beginning is the modifier that should modify the tribes of SA, which is correct. Hence option C & D are eliminated.
E is wordy in that 'well structured traditional society' is converted to society that is well structured.. hence eliminated.
In B, society that is strictly adhered to... adhered to what? society itself... thats not the meaning the sentence conveys.
Hence A is the best answer.

Patriarchal in nature, with a strong emphasis on the role of the ancestors in their day to day lives, the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas.

The tribes of SA have a well structured traditional society.
This society is patriarchal in nature, with strong emphasis of the role of the ancestors
This society is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas.

This is a tricky question, since one might think that the non-underlined portion modifies the tribes. Nevertheless, the tribes cannot be patriarchal in nature. Moreover, "strong emphasis of the role..." gives additional information for the traditional society.

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
modifier error.

B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
same modifier error. In addition, "well structured" is a modifier and not a verb. Moreover, this one is different from the first one by saying that the society is usually adhered to, but by whom?

C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
changes the meaning. the verb "is structured" is now a modifier, and thus, the sentence is focusing on the fact that the TS is strictly adhered to.

D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
looks good. the right noun after the long non-underlined modifier. Presents same idea: TS is well structured and strictly adhered to. Picked this one.

E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
Same modifier error as in A and B.

D for me.

Patriarchal in nature refers the Tribes. Hence the option C and D can be eliminated.
Also the intended meaning of the sentence is The tribes have a well structured society and they adhere to it.
In option A - They refers the tribe and the meaning looks correct.
B. Changes the meaning - 'B' states Society is adhered which is wrong. The tribes in the society are adhering.
C. Doesn't start with tribes - hence eliminated.
D. Same as above.
E. Parallelism error and meaning error. "That is well structured and That is ..." and also Society is adhered which is wrong.

Hence A is correct.

Initial modifier must describe 'the tribes' because if not then 'their' in the non-underlined portion will not have any referent. So, C and D are out.
In A, 'that they strictly adhered to' and in B, 'That is strictly adhered to' make no sense.
So, The answer is E.

Patriarchal in nature, with a strong emphasis on the role of the ancestors in their day to day lives, the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas.

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
here meaning is the issue.....society of tribes is patriarchal......"they strictly adhered to" is not correct....

B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
It corrects the meaning issue.....society is adhered to something.....

C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
here meaning is the issue tribes of Africa have society that society is adhered to something......it completely changes the meaning. .another thing "with a strong emphasis......"modifies society.....but it should modify tribes.....

D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
unnecessarily using parallelism ...."well structured" and "adhered to" are two things....meaning is the issue ....it completely changes the meaning... Modifier is not modifying correctly.....

E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
here also it completely changing the meaning......well structured society is adhered to something is correct...

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas "they" refers to whom? Also the past tense "adhered" is incorrect in a sentence which is in present tense.
B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas Correct
C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas Incorrect modifier. The option should start with "the tribes. Also because of "noun pile up", it is not clear what is adhered to by the "well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa".
D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas Incorrect modifier as in C. Also, meaning is changed. Original meaning says that the well structured traditional nature of the society is adhered to. Here it means that the traditional society is adhered to
E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas Incorrect modifier as in C. Meaning change as seen in D.

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas - Modifier error. "Patriarchal in nature" should modify society and not the tribes.
B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas - Modifier error. "Patriarchal in nature" should modify society and not the tribes
C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas - Patriarchal in nature" should modify society and it will be better if "well structured" and "strictly adhered to" are placed in parallel.
D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas - Correct answer choice
E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas - Modifier error. "Patriarchal in nature" should modify society and not the tribes

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas

b)Same error as in a.
c)Meaning error. Here the sentence means that well structured traditional society are Patriarchal , but traditional society are in general Patriarchal.
d)Both the errors of a and b are taken care of. Hence is correct as it is.

Patriarchal in nature, with a strong emphasis on the role of the ancestors in their day to day lives, the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas.

What is patriarchical in nature? Tribes or their society? Perhaps the society. Now lets analyze the choices:

A. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that they strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
This indicates that the tribes are patriarchical. Moreover the use of past tense in "adhered" is not correct. Incorrect.

B. the tribes of South Africa have a well structured traditional society that is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
Similar to A, this indicates that the tribes are patriarchical. Incorrect.

C. the well structured traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
The meaning clarity is slightly lost in saying that the well structured traditional society is patriarchical in nature. Incorrect.

D. the traditional society of the tribes of South Africa is well structured and strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
This correctly implies that the traditional society is patriarchical. Also the term "well structured" effectively and unambiguously qualifies the traditional society. CORRECT.

E. the tribes of South Africa have a traditional society that is well structured and is strictly adhered to, especially in the rural areas
Similar to A and B, this indicates that the tribes are patriarchical. Incorrect.
