Q1. Because quitting smoking is very stressful and leads to weight gain, it is difficult to do so. The key to quitting, however, may be as simple as replacing an unhealthy activity with a healthy one. In one study, half of those attempting to quit were assigned to a smoking-cessation program alone, and the other half were assigned to the same program plus fifteen weeks of aerobic exercise. At the one month mark, none in the first group had quit, but 40 percent of those in the second group had not smoked. Each of the following, if true, provides some support for the argument EXCEPT: (A) Regular exercise prevents weight gain. (B) Each group in the study included four hundred randomly selected participants. (C) Nonsmokers accustomed to regular exercise do not gain weight when they stop exercising. (D) Aerobic exercise can stimulate the brain’s production of endorphins, which reduce tension. (E) Of those in the second group in the study, 38 percent had not smoked at the one-year mark.
C seems like the answer

Q2. The numbers of retired people will grow as the population becomes older, and their political power will expand even faster than their numbers. Which of the following, if true, LEAST supports the statement about the growth of the political power of retirees? (A) Those retired people who had supported political parties while they were in the workforce are more likely to support parties after retirement than are those retired people who had not done so previously. (B) Retired people devote more time to political activities than do members of the work force. (C) The adult children of retired people tend to vote in ways that support the interests of their parents even though such actions may not be in the children’s own economic benefits. (D) Retired people are more likely to vote than are members of the workforce. (E) More retired people than working people belong to associations that mobilize their members to take action concerning political issues that may affect them.
I can mark all options as "must" it’s difficult to get one option out.

Even associations (E) doesn’t imply more power so I think we can use this logic. It seems more generic whereas A doesn’t support the statement at all. It doesn’t signify an increase

we cant* use

old people are very rigid with their decision in voting, these oldiees are very difficult to mold so, their power are definitely going to increase politically.

Why you chose E?? I think somewhere this statement in supported by argument.
Yes, you are right the correct one shouldn’t be option E. But now I have a strong inclination towards C as it says that nonsmokers do not gain weight when they quit smoking. So, option C in a way is going against the argument that is to be less supportive. I guess this won’t be incorrect.

(D) Aerobic exercise can stimulate the brain’s production of endorphins, which reduce tension. (E) Of those in the second group in the study, 38 percent had not smoked at the one-year mark.
The answer should be D
The passage mentions in the first line that quitting smoking is difficult because it is stressful and leads to weight gain.
So, If the second group has got some success, the Aerobic exercise should aid in one of these.

Conclusion: "The key to quitting, however, may be as simple as replacing an unhealthy activity with a healthy one"
Support: "At the one month mark, none in the first group had quit, but 40 percent of those in the second group had not smoked."

A is talking generically about regular exercise.
B Even if it was not the same number of participants, any success against 0 success in the first group is better.
C Talking about non smokers - irrelevant
D This is somewhat showing some support for the conclusion as per the premise in first line of the passage.
E We don’t know what % of participants from group 1 had quit after 1 year.

It’s C
From A to E, every option provides some theory or conclusion, however wild they might be, but within the process and context of the passage. Smokers and quitting with exercise etc., except C
C starts talking point with non smokers exercising and later stopping, if they used the word aerobics instead of exercise, it would’ve been a different story.
The answer is C

All arguments are weak, but C the weakest

This question asks for a weakener. IMO C should be the answer.

because in choice E, double "it" have no clear reference. probably first "it" refers to "The Purple Heart" but second one has no clear reference
