I have a doubt regarding answer choice D as I think it should be E.D changes the meaning.The diary helps to understand a certain time period in a certain part of the world (mostly Europe) where Jews faced the atrocities and transgressions.
But E implies that the diary helps to understand the world war 2.World war 2 was much bigger and was fought across the globe.I think E mimics the internal meaning.

I also think that this question will not cross the door of the gmat cause one can solve this question just by using just as...so idiom.GMAT is not that easy anymore.

Yes, you are right. Because of this, we eliminated only 2 options. Without so, you can't express the intended meaning here. I also chose D as this option has an appropriate comparison.
