FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update (4/20/20)
Where we are at:  Another week, similar story to what we’ve been seeing over the past few weeks.  There are now over 22 million people who have filed for unemployment in the past four weeks and another 4+ million are expected to file this week.  We will be seeing a lot of companies (about 1/5 of public companies) reporting earnings results this week, which will provide a better window on the real corporate impact the pandemic has been having.  This continues to help us understand what companies are seeing/feeling and what that could mean for future hiring.  We are watching various European economies beginning to open, which hopefully can provide some sort of a blueprint for how the US can slowly do the same.

What we are hearing from companies:  Honestly, not a lot has changed in what we have been hearing.  We have seen a small uptick in internships being cancelled, but those tend to be in concentrated markets such as retail, cruise lines, airlines, food, and steel that have been particularly hard hit.  There are a few insurance and financial companies on the list as well.  As I’ve mentioned before, the VAST majority of companies are still holding true to their internship and full time offers, albeit possibly in a different format (particularly for internships).  Virtual internships and pushed back start dates are becoming a lot more common, as companies try to figure out the best way to manage through this.  There are still A LOT of jobs being posted on Kelley Connect (over 100 last week) so make sure to be checking it regularly.  LinkedIn also has a lot of postings and they have a good list of companies hiring. Here are a few cool new roles that are posted on Kelley Connect currently:

  • Beckman Coulter, Client Services Analyst, Job ID 40641, Full time – domestic only – Indianapolis
  • Saunders Midwest – Sales Manager, Job ID 40639, Full time – domestic only – Chicago
There are many other full time and internship roles out there, so make sure to look if you are still seeking.

What you should be doing now:  I’ve mentioned a lot of possibilities of things that you can be doing now in my prior posts.  They are all still really good options for you for this summer.  One thing that you should definitely be focused on is taking care of yourself.  It is really easy during this time to fall into depression or negative thinking.  Make sure to be doing things such as the following to stay healthy and in a more positive mindset:

  • Exercise – take a walk, get outside and enjoy the weather as it gets nicer. It’s good to get fresh air and hear the birds and see the flowers.
  • Talk to people – connect with friends and family as we have all become more isolated.
  • Know that it’s OK to have waves of feelings – some days are good, some not so much. It’s good to talk to others about these feelings as many others are feeling the same way during this time.
Lastly, reach out to UCS and we can help coach you through this.  We are here to help.

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update (4/27/20)
Where we are at:  We continued to see large unemployment filings last week, now totaling over 26 million people who have filed for unemployment in the last five week.  This week will likely continue to increase, although probably not quite as much.  Earnings season for public companies continues, with about 1/3 of them reporting quarterly earnings this week.  As I’ve mentioned, this gives us a window into what corporations are seeing and what the impact on them through March has been.  There have been some “winners”, namely technology companies that provide services for working at home, PC manufacturers, Netflix (as we all continue to binge watch), grocery stores and some others.  There have been a lot of losers too, and we will likely see more of that this week.  Some US cities are beginning to open up slowly, as are some European countries, and we will all be watching to see if it works.

What we are hearing from companies:  Last week was a tougher week in terms of the number of companies outright cancelling their internships.  We saw a big uptick from the prior few weeks, although the overall number of companies doing this remains low.   From the company side, they are still trying to figure this all out – how to stay in business and keep as many current employees on staff as possible.  Many are trying all sorts of things to hold on, particularly across-the-board staff pay cuts and temporary furloughs.  These companies still very much value the relationships they have with their hired interns and full time students (even if they had to cancel them), yet they are having to make extremely tough choices and, in some cases, are having to cut offers to stay afloat.  As previously mentioned, there ARE still companies hiring, and here are a few to check out (all on Kelley Connect):

What you should be doing now:  If you are still seeking (or newly seeking once again), reach out to us ASAP.  We can help to walk you through different ideas and options.  It’s time to reset our expectations and recognize that a “normal” internship may not be in the cards this year – and that’s totally OK.  Employers are all going through this at the same time as you, so the question for you in the fall when interviewing will be “How did you spend your time during COVID-19?”.  Focus on the skills that you can acquire this summer, whether that is through volunteering, project work, or academic classes (summer school or free online classes).  The important thing is to be doing and learning something.

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Students ‘zoom’ to promote good mental health during annual Kelley Impact Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Stay-at-home orders and other precautions against the coronavirus couldn’t stop organizers of the  Kelley Impact Competition from moving forward to help the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization.

This is the 10th anniversary of the Kelley Institute for Social Impact, which organized the case competition for socially-minded undergraduate students. It’s also the second year for the event, which last year aided Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County.

The top three teams receive monetary prizes, but more importantly, the winning team also receives $10,000 in seed money to support their idea and hopefully create lasting change for the client, which this year was the greater Bloomington chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Teams were asked to identify strategies that will increase the impact that the local NAMI chapter will have on the community and come up with methods to expand the reach of its message and grow its base of supporters and volunteers.

Last fall, Kelley 2011 alumnus Lance Breitstein, whose gift made the competition possible, asked the focus to be on mental health and wellness.

As part of its “Decade of Difference” celebration, the competition – which is open to all undergraduates at IU Bloomington — originally was scheduled to cap off a week of activities. As it became apparent in March that the coronavirus was going to affect campus activities, organizers moved it to April 24 and online.

Ten of the 12 original teams – each consisting of four students – remained committed. During the competition, they used Zoom to log in from all over the world — from India and China – as well as from all across the country – from Florida, California, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, New York – and, of course, Indiana. Also tuning in were 13 judges who included alumni and community partners.

Members of the winning team — pictured above with several judges — were Bridget Caraher, a senior from Munster, Indiana, and juniors Jackson Holforty, from Carmel, Indiana; Emily Klein, from Austin, Texas; and Gage Hamill, from Springfield, Illinois. In addition to receiving seed money for their project, they will share a $10,000 prize.

The second-place team received $3,000 and third-place team received $2,000.

“I decided to compete in this case competition because I have several close friends who have been impacted by and struggled with mental health, and I believe in NAMI’s mission to grow awareness and end the stigma surrounding mental health,” said Hamill, who is majoring in finance and business analytics.

“I immediately wanted to participate because of how important mental health is in our community,” added Klein, who is majoring in information systems, business analytics and operations management.

The winning proposal suggested the creation of a new service learning course at IU Bloomington that combines event planning, fundraising and continued engagement with NAMI for multiple semesters. Because the budget for the winning proposal only required half of the seed money that is being awarded, the second-place proposal – featuring a combination of website updates, digital marketing, community events and video production – also will be partially funded.

Research indicates that about six percent of Indiana residents — more than 380,000 Hoosiers — is living with a serious mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, or post- traumatic stress disorder. These brain disorders can be debilitating and substantially affect the lives of individuals, families and our communities.

Mental health is a significant health need in Monroe County, ranking fourth behind substance use/abuse, obesity, and poverty. More than 8 percent of residents in a survey said they had fair to poor mental health. Monroe County’s mortality rate for suicide is 20.5 percent, compared to 15.4 percent for the state.

Even during the best of times, awareness, support and education for those affected by mental illness and their support networks is greatly needed. When students first received their case for NAMI in early February, no one could foresee the feelings of isolation affecting those ones because of social distancing requirements due to COVID-19.

While the case given students wasn’t changed due to the virus, Shawna Meyer-Niederman, KISI’s associate director (pictured left), suspects that recent events led many to somewhat reassess their approaches and consider changing circumstances.

“It’s interesting that now, more than ever, we’re seeing how important that is,” she said. “With all of the things that are changing, it’s a little more common to talk about it and how important it is, as you’re realizing as we’re quarantining and away from our friends.”

Breitstein continues to see real value in the competition he founded. “The Kelley Impact Competition incentivizes the smartest students in the country to learn more about the issues in their community, find solutions, and make a real difference in the world around them,” he said.

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Beyond Kelley Connect – LEVERAGE YOUR CONTACTS
ANYWHERE FROM 60-90% OF JOBS ARE FOUND INFORMALLY THROUGH FRIENDS, RELATIVES, AND DIRECT CONTACTS. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET CLOSER TO SECURING AN OFFER?
TALK TO PEOPLE:  The majority of your “search time” — 80-90% — should be spent contacting people by sending outreach emails, and making calls to set up and conduct informational interviews. People in the field will know about opportunities. If they don’t when you talk to them, they will eventually. Expanding your base of contacts increases your chances of “being in the right place at the right time”.

  • Join a professional association for people in your field of interest. Many of them provide discounted student memberships and host career-related events. An example is the American Advertising Federation.
  • If you are doing a geographic search, look up the Chamber of Commerce for that area. A city’s Chamber of Commerce lists local business members (read: potential employers) and organizes various networking events (read: the door to potential opportunities). An example is Denver’s Chamber of Commerce.
THINK ABOUT WHAT IS IN YOUR BACKYARD AND GET STEPPING STONE EXPERIENCES:  These are experiences you can build on and help you get to where you want to be. This might be a part-time job during the school year or summer, or a volunteer or unpaid experience. For example:

  • If you want to work in the sports industry and have no prior industry experience, chances are slim to none that you will start off in the big leagues like the NBA. Be prepared to put in your time and work your way up. The NBA might be your dream, but your first experience in sports might be in the IU Athletics ticket office.
  • If you are interested in the music industry, another example of a stepping stone experience might be joining the Union Board to coordinate and plan concerts and live music events.
LOOK AT JOB POSTING RESOURCES AND LINKS AND COMPANY WEBSITES FOR LISTED OPPORTUNITIES: Yes, look at these and apply. Remember though, most opportunities are secured through word of mouth where a personal connection may not only have told you about an available job, but opened the door for an interview because she personally passed your resume along to the hiring manager. Once you find an opportunity posted, is there someone you’ve met or do you know someone who knows someone willing to make a referral that can help get your foot in the door?
TAILOR YOUR RESUME TO YOUR AUDIENCE: Make adjustments to your resume. If you are doing a search beyond Kelley Connect and targeting a certain industry or geographic location, be aware that many recipients of your resume will not be Kelley alums who are familiar with the caliber of the school or the classes you’ve taken. Take a look at our off-campus search resume sample to see what kind of information you might include.

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Kelley Alumni Initiatives To Connect Students & Alumni to Address Covid-19
A number of Kelley Alumni have begun to create opportunities to help students and graduates who have had experience opportunities impacted by COVID 19. We encourage you to participate in both!  Please feel free to share feedback with our office about your experiences.

Alex Wisniewski, former UCS peer coach and IU Student Body President, has launched the initiative below on Linkedin:
One year ago, I was starting my FINAL finals week and I was ECSTATIC! In parallel, I was FREAKING out because I was about to #graduate#movehome, and #startmyfirstjob. Transitioning to “normal life” after graduation is hard. No one really talks about it because everyone handles it so differently. With everything going on in the world right now, I can only imagine what soon-to-be grads are experiencing.

A group of recent grads from across the country came together to figure out what we could to support the shoes we filled not long ago. We’re not experts but we are hoping to collectively provide some advice and support.

Please tag or share this with any soon-to-be or recent graduate you know. Our survey ask about how they’re feeling, what they’re worried about, and what questions they have. Our group will use responses to drive content and opportunities to support graduates. Thank you!

Access Bell
Martin Aguinis, Kelley Alum recently recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30, has launched https://accessbell.com/ to help students connect professionally with people in industry. Access Bell is a website that connects professionals to students and job seekers interested in gaining career advice. He launched the site as a COVID-19 initiative to focus on supporting those that are now struggling in their careers.

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Connecting During Times of Economic Uncertainty.
The COVID 19 experience has created a great deal of stress and uncertainty for students who are about to graduate next week or who are graduating in the class of 2021.  Those with jobs are asking, “Will my employer honor the offer they made? Will my start date get delayed? Will my offer get reduced? Will my company still be in existence?” Juniors seeking internships or with secured internships are seeing their experiences transition from in person all summer to virtual or to a shortened experience, or in some cases canceled in whole.  For everyone in the marketplace the only thing that is guaranteed is a high level of stress.  Things feel outside of our control and in many cases they are. What we can control is how we respond.  During times of career uncertainty the best insurance is to continue to connect and build the foundation of your professional network.  Lifelong learning should be something deeply ingrained in the Kelley experience and connecting professionally is another way to continue learning about an industry, company, role or even more about yourself.  Strengthening your professional network and relationships is important during times of economic uncertainty but really a skill to practice in times of economic strength as well.  Here are a few ways to maximize your success when developing your professional network whether you have secured an opportunity or not.

  • Set a goal for the # of people you plan to connect with in a week/month/this summer. Track it!
  • Block time out of your day for connecting.
  • Start close to home, think about family, friends of family, Uncle Tony who’s not really an Uncle, people you already know.
  • Deep dive on a specific industry or industry sector – join groups related to your target industry on LinkedIn – Read what they have to say – engage in the conversation!
  • Reach out to professionals who have written articles you’ve enjoyed.
  • Ask for time to learn about a person’s role, their experience with a company, in an industry.
  • Take the time to write notes to people who have assisted you with your career aspirations in the past.
  • Talk to colleagues from school who are in a role you’re interested in.
  • Ask colleagues if they know anyone in the role/firm/industry that you’re interested in.
  • Ask someone you know at a target firm if they’d be willing to put on a mini info session for a group of peers.
  • Check in with peers/ professionals that you’ve contacted in the past/ ask if they’re well  – Showing that you value a relationship beyond what that person can do for you is imperative to developing a long lasting relationship.
  • Talk to the IU Alumni Chapter head in your target geography.
  • Volunteer! Having a common set of values is what solidifies relationships. Invite others to volunteer with you!
  • Work with your career coach to plan your approach!
Notice, nowhere in the examples above did job applications come up.  If you have a job we encourage you to continue to develop your professional network.  We are not encouraging you to continue to recruit.  For those of you new to this process please know, developing your professional connections can seem overwhelming at first.  Just like anything else, you get better with practice.

Remember, we at the UCS are here to help! If you have questions about developing your professional network please don’t hesitate to make an appointment on Kelley Connect, or reach out directly to any of the coaches on our coaching team.

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update (5/4/20)
Where we are at:  Not much has changed since last week in terms of seeing dire numbers from the weekly unemployment filings.  We are currently at an unprecedented 30 million people who have filed for unemployment over the past six weeks.  This week, we should continue to see an increase, although likely smaller than the 3.8m who filed last week. Monthly unemployment numbers come out on Friday, and the expectation is that it will indicate a U.S. unemployment rate of around 15-16%.  Prior to the COVID-10 pandemic, overall U.S. unemployment was below 4%.  Quarterly corporate earnings continue to show a big drop in March (unsurprising) and the outlook for this quarter and the year is really murky.  Companies aren’t sure what to forecast as they don’t know how quickly the economy will begin to turn around, thus the corporate guidance for the year tends to be along the lines of “flying blind”.  We have moved into a stage where some cities are slowly opening up and some aren’t and our guess is that the opening will be much more regionally based going forward.  We, like everyone else, continue to watch and wait to see if it works.

What we are hearing from companies:  The number of companies cancelling internships appeared to slow last week, and, with the school year coming to an end for most universities, it hopefully has mostly cycled through.  There will likely be some continued uncertainty in terms of timing of start dates for full time roles, as companies try to figure out when (if) they can return to work and what the “new normal” of work looks like.  We do continue to see companies hiring and looking for students to work on projects (likely all remotely), so continue to check Kelley Connect, LinkedIn, etc. if you are still seeking.  Here are a few interesting internship opportunities that were posted on KC late last week.

Posted on Kelley Connect – all for a company called Fullscreen which is a social content company

What you should be doing now:  We hope that your last week of the 2020 spring semester goes well.  Know that we in UCS are here for you all summer – we don’t leave like you all do.  We will be continuing to post opportunities, connect with employers, host UCS events virtually and get ready for the fall semester.  Career fairs and employer networking nights WILL still happen in the fall and companies WILL still be recruiting.  Whether that will be in person or remote or a hybrid, we can’t yet say, but we can definitely say it will happen one way or another.  Stay in touch and make sure to reach out if you need some career coaching, job assistance or if we can help in any way.

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley partnering with Indy Chamber to offer free Rapid Recovery Series webinars to help businesses impacted by COVID-19

INDIANAPOLIS – Indy Chamber and Kelley Executive Education at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business are partnering to offer a webinar series that will give business owners best practices and strategies for reopening and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Free and open to the public, the Rapid Recovery Series will cover topics ranging from setting a recovery strategy and rebuilding business financials to repairing supply chains and attracting new customers. Each hour-long webinar will be led by a Kelley School of Business faculty member, with 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of Q&A.

Charlotte Westerhaus-Renfrow, clinical assistant professor of business law and management (pictured left), will lead the first session from 4 to 5 p.m. on May 26. Recordings of each session will be made available at Indy Chamber’s Rapid Response Hub.

Held each Tuesday and Thursday through June 18, the eight-part series will be taught by Kelley faculty at Indianapolis and Bloomington.

“The Indy Chamber/Kelley School of Business Recovery Series is a well-timed and perfectly targeted series of webinars for owners and leaders of small and mid-sized businesses,” said Richard J. Magjuka, faculty chair of Kelley School of Business Executive Education and the Fred G. Steingraber Chair in Distributed Education.

“The Indy Chamber Kelley School of Business Recovery Series will help you not only to recover from the effects of the pandemic but to flourish,” Magjuka added. “Each webinar has been crafted specifically to address critical business issues that confront small and mid-sized businesses today.”

This unprecedented opportunity for business owners and entrepreneurs to learn from academic experts adds to the Indy Chamber’s small business recovery services, including its Buy Indy local support campaign, Rapid Response Talent program for job seekers and employers, and Restart Grant Program for the purchase of items to keep customers and employees safe.

Kelley has partnered with the Indy Chamber on its COVID-19 response efforts, serving as a resource for businesses in search of small business strategy and operational support. The webinar series is another example of how the Kelley School is supporting employers in Central Indiana and across the Hoosiers state.

“Our mission is always to serve our community. We are proud to support the Indy Chamber’s Rapid Response Hub,” said Phil Powell, associate dean of academic programs in Indianapolis. “Managers must use reliable data and best management practices to make well-informed decisions. As businesses work to reopen and recover, our Kelley School faculty will offer well-placed advice, strategy and insights during these free webinar sessions. We don’t want Indianapolis businesses to make uninformed decisions that lead to unnecessary bankruptcy or loss of customers.”

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: IU Research Office, Kelley School provides financial support for social ventures coming out of Idea Sprint Weekend Against COVID-19
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In mid-March, faculty at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business organized a three-day “virtual idea blitz” to address impacts of COVID-19 across the arenas of health, education and small business, in communities and through changed purchasing behaviors.

Led by Regan Stevenson, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship and the John and Donna Shoemaker Faculty Fellow in Entrepreneurship, and Matthew Josefy, assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship, the initiative resulted in 21 ideas with corresponding pitches were developed in five thematic areas: health needs, education, small businesses, community, and purchasing.

Josefy and Stevenson documented their reflections in an article published in Business Horizons, an academic journal published at Kelley.

Impressed with the effort, the IU Office of the Vice President for Research funded a proposal to provide multiple mini-grants of up to $2,500 to accelerate entrepreneurial responses coming out of the “Idea Sprint Weekend Against COVID-19″ initiative. It complements other support from within the Kelley School.

They are inviting applications for ideas that were developed in March and new ideas that are now being pursued. Those who did not participate in the original event but have a team member or other substantial connection to IU are also eligible to submit applications. The initial deadline for full consideration is May 31.

Those who did not participate in the original program are encouraged to watch a video about the project.

Links to the application and criteria are available at https://www.covid19ideas.org/. To ensure an equitable process, Stevenson and Josefy will be unable to correspond or provide feedback while applications are being prepared. Submitted applications should be submitted to Tammy Rader at tkk@indiana.edu.
