Like when scientists turn from experiments on animals to ones on humans, the results of the new study are provocative but hardly clear-cut.

A) Like when - Incorrect, intended meaning not clear, no proper comparison is happening.

B) As is often the case when - Correct, fixes the meaning issue, proper comparison is made. Now it implies, that as it often happens when scientists turn from experiments on animals to ones on humans, the results of the new study are provocative but hardly clear-cut.

C) In such a way as - Incorrect, same as A.

D) Just as if - Incorrect, intended meaning modified, wrong comparison.

E) Similar to when - Incorrect, similar to when what??, incomplete comparison.

A) Like when -> Wrong construction, seems like something is going to be compared with "When" e.g. Like when....XYZ did something..... -> Completely nonsensical

B) As is often the case when -> Correct

C) In such a way as -> Unidiomatic and does not convey the intended meaning

D) Just as if -> Just as if is unidiomatic and does not convey the intended meaning

E) Similar to when -> Similar to when... -> again wrong construction, similar to option A

The sentence is trying to present a scenario as to "what is the result when an event takes place."

Quote:
A) Like when
Like when is not giving us the intended meaning. Hence we can eliminate.

Quote:
B) As is often the case when
This is giving us the intended meaning and presenting the gist of the sentence.

Quote:
C) In such a way as
This is clearly not the intended meaning. In such a way as scientists turn......

Quote:
D) Just as if
Same error as C. Usage of if is incorrect

Quote:
E) Similar to when
Similar to ... we have to present that similar situation here..and that is not present at all..Eliminate

IMO B

Like when scientists turn from experiments on animals to ones on humans, the results of the new study are provocative but hardly clear-cut.

A) Like when // like is used to compare nouns or noun entities. here it compares a sentence with a noun entity.

B) As is often the case when // not perfect but good enough to be correct.

C) In such a way as // "such as" is used to give examples of nouns or noun entities. here it precedes a sentence.

D) Just as if // "just as" if, or just "as if"? a hard-to-read sentence. also, both convey illogical meaning.

E) Similar to when // "the results of the new study" is compared with "when scientists turn from experiments," an illogical comparison
