Hi all,

I was admitted to NYU (with a full tuition scholarship) and Cornell (with a 50% scholarship).

My post MBA goal is to work 2-3 years in IB in NYC and, then, go back to my home country (in Europe).

It's a tough decision even if, overall, I think NYU would be a better option.

Here is why I would choose NYU:
- Location: I love NYC while I think I might get bored at Ithaca;
- Full tuition scholarship. However, life is less expensive at Ithaca and if I negociate, I might get a full scholarship at Cornell (I am not very confident about that);
- Stern is very strong in IB;
- In my opinion, Stern is more selective and stronger than Johnson (but Cornell > NYU);
- If I change my mind about IB, there would be more networking opportunity to find another job in NYC during the 2nd year.

However, Cornell has many advantages:
- It is also quite strong in IB. Less competition with other students to get interviews;
- If I can manage to get a full scholarship, it would be less expensive than NYU;
- It's Ivy League, so maybe more benefits over the long term?
- Maybe better than Stern in consulting if I change my mind (not sure about this);
- I guess that relationships with students (and alumni) are stronger than NYU.

I would love to have your input. Do you think that, with a long term view, it's better to go to an Ivy League university? Though I would say that, in my home country NYU and Cornell have about the same reputation.

Thank for your help!

My thoughts

1. Ivy League thing is useless at the MBA level (more of undergrad thing) in the U.S. You wouldn't prefer Cornell to Stanford just because Cornell is Ivy League and Stanford isn't? (or put Northwestern, UChicago, MIT, etc) Unless that is important in Europe, which I'm not sure about
2. If you can get full scholarship at Cornell, I think it's neck and neck and goes to personal fit. Currently, I think Stern is a clear winner. I don't think Cornell is better in consulting than Stern. Their employment stat is virtually same in consulting (26% vs 28%).
3. Johnson is smaller and located in rural area. It definitely will be more tight-knit community than big city school overall. However, I wouldn't worry about this too much if you're single and live nearby campus.

Congrats!

You are targeting IB in NYC. Moreover, Stern is offering you more money! I would choose Stern unless you hate living in NYC and prefer living in suburbs.
Regarding benefits of Ivey League title, I think it really depends on your country so it's hard to tell.

Another vote for Stern here.

Having had experience living on Cornell's campus, I can safely say that you would have much more of a social life and employer accessibility in NYC than Collegetown.

With the current situation, Stern is the clear choice. With equal money, I would still heavily lean Stern. Stern is stronger in banking, stronger in consulting (Just a few years ago MBBs did not have great presence on Johnson campus), and even internationally has a good brand. With equal money I could see Cornell for fit and "closer" relationships at the slight expense of program quality.

Easy choice, pick Stern!

If you go to Johnson, you would have to take a weekly trip to NYC (4 hours each way) for informationals w/ all the banks..At Stern, any visit to a bank is only a few minutes. The Stern NYC location also attracts more firms, better staff (i.e. it's hard to compare the career center of Stern vs Johnson), and more/better guest speakers / professors. It's hard to see why anyone would pick Johnson over Stern, esp given the $$$ involved.
