A) Miller fired until it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship
B) Miller fired till it ran out of ammunition and was ordered that he abandons ship
C) Miller fired till it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandons ship

(A), (B), (C):Incorrect; we don't know what Miller fired (it).

D) Miller fired the gun until it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship
E) Miller fired the gun until it ran out of ammunition; he was ordered to abandon ship
D could be correct but (E) conveys the intended meaning more clearly than (D) does.

Correct answer : (E)

Can anyone please explain why fired and was ordered are two action not for miller. I thinks its conveying the correct meaning...

Also can anyone please explain the role of "until it ran..." because the clause "Miller fired...." is a complete clause. And the second clause "until it ran..." is it correct in the same sentence... or please explain if its not acting as a clause...

Thanks in advance. :)

rakeshtewatia0105 The word "until" turns the clause "it ran out of ammunition" into an adverbial modifier for "fired." This is very common:

I ran until I was out of breath.
Her parents supported her until she finished her mba.
We partied until the sun went down.

As for D, I would argue that it can be read as correct. Some folks find it unclear, as discussed above, but generally the wrong answers should be actively wrong, and there is nothing wrong with D aside from the potential clarity issue.

Miller fired until it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship

A) Miller fired until it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship
B) Miller fired till it ran out of ammunition and was ordered that he abandons ship
C) Miller fired till it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandons ship
D) Miller fired the gun until it ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship
E) Miller fired the gun until it ran out of ammunition; he was ordered to abandon ship

only the last options can be used, as the other 3 options do not mention the reference of 'it'.
'D' can be used as it doesnt say who was ordered to abandon ship.

so after elimination only option 'E' remains.
