My choice is E option.

A,B and C distorted the intended meaning.

In D, The sentence is looking Fragment. But I am unsure between D and E.

A) concertina without success

B) concertina unsuccessfully

C) concertina without being successful

D) concertina, having no success in his search

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful

My answer: (E)
Time: 22 seconds.

My issue with (A), (B), and (C) is that they are ambiguous.
Meaning 1: Mr. Tanner fail to find an instruction book on how to play the concertina. (This is likely the intended meanign)
Meaning 2: Mr. Tanner is looking for an instruction book on "how to play the concertina without success". (Is there such a book? Probably not. But the ambiguity is there. Good writing should be clear and free of ambiguity. )

Between (D) and (E), (E) is straightforward and grammatically sound.
(D) is technically OK, but such construction is unnatural to say the least.

Mr. Tanner has looked in all the bookstores in the city for an instruction book on how to play the concertina without success.

Meaning Analysis: Statement says that Mr Tanner has looked for some book in all the bookstores in the city, but was not successful.

A) concertina without success - This says name of Book is concertina without success.

B) concertina unsuccessfully - Same as above.

C) concertina without being successful - Same as above.

D) concertina, having no success in his search - Ing Modifier, Can modifier the action 'has looked'; However having no success is awkward construction.

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful[/quote] - Independent clause starting with but, seems OK with clear meaning.

A) concertina without success

B) concertina unsuccessfully

C) concertina without being successful

D) concertina, having no success in his search

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful

The question to ask is "What has been without success"? It is the search of instruction book. So then without success at the end of the sentence is just weird and ambiguous.

B) concertina unsuccessfully - This is exactly same as Option A just replaced "without success" with "unsuccessfully". So doesn't really change anything.

C) concertina without being successful - This is awkward. Also Is it saying "how to play X without being successful". What?

D) concertina, having no success in his search - Usage is "having" is not preferred. Also "success" in his search is not the best way to describe it.

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful - This is simple yet conveys the perfect meaning.

I'll go with E.

FACT 1 -> Option A would have been correct if the primary subject was search. Mr. Tanner has looked for an instruction book on how to play the concertina, in all the bookstores in the city unsuccessfully.. But this is not the case, hence A is out.
FACT 2 -> Option B and C are giving a sense that he is looking for a book - how to play concertina unsuccessfully. Hence B and C are out.
FACT 3 -> Option D - Unnecessary use of Passive tone.

Answer goes E

A) concertina without success

B) concertina unsuccessfully

C) concertina without being successful

D) concertina, having no success in his search

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful

POE:
Eliminate (A), (B) & (C) - Meaning is wrong
Eliminate (D) - tense plus (E) is more clear and simple.

A) concertina without success

B) concertina unsuccessfully

C) concertina without being successful

D) concertina, having no success in his search

E) concertina, but his search has been unsuccessful - CORRECT

1) On reading the sentence it is not clear if the adverb "without success" is modifying the "how to play the concertina" or "the search". This should not be the success the options A,B&C have a similar problem so they can be eliminated.
2) Option D seems to change the sentence meaning. The sentence meaning on replacing with D changes to Mr.Tanner with no success in the search started looking in bookstores, which is not the case so eliminate this.

The Answer is E
