Hi kuchu,

This is where YOUR self-analysis has to be detailed. You likely answered just a few more correct answers on this CAT than on your last couple of CATs (and made fewer little mistakes), so you have to determine what 'extra' work you did this time around and continue working at this 'level' of detail.

thanks rich .

I practised a bit more while giving this test. But, the most important change is that i gave the test more confidently and took the quants section agressively. I think that has helped me alot.

Finally scheduled my appointment on 19th aug. I hope I can reach a 700 on mocks in a month :)

Hi kuchu,

That Test Date makes sense - you're performing at a strong level right now, so testing relatively soon is a good idea. While it might sound strange, you could have very easily scored 700+ on this CAT. At this scoring level, the GMAT becomes really 'sensitive' to silly/little mistakes. On this CAT, how many questions COULD you have gotten correct, but didn't because of a little mistake? Too many of those errors will keep you from scoring 700+. On the positive side of things, if you can just keep those little mistakes from happening, then you'll hit your goal.

Hii Rich,

If you can explain me the reason behind my scores it will be indeed helpful.
GMat prep exam 2: Score 650 V31 Q 48
Verbal incorrect question numbers: 2,3,9,11,15,18,20,22,23,25,27,31,34,35,36,38,41 Total:17
Quant incorrect question numbers: 1,4,9,11,13,14,17,18,27,31,34,36,37 Total: 13
GMAT prep exam 3: Score 640 V30 Q47
Verbal incorrect question numbers: 1,2,4,9,21,22,26,28,30,34,36,37,39,41 Total: 14
Quant incorrect question numbers: 3,10,11,,13,15,16,18,19,22,26,27,29,30,34,36 Total: 15

Can you please explain the reason that even though the number of incorrect questions in my verbal has come down in 3rd exam but my score has also come down from 31 to 30. Also, out of initial 20 questions i got 7 wrong and got V31 and when i got 4 wrong, i got V30.
I have my exam within the next two weeks, Can you please help and tell me what can I do to improve from here on

Hi kuchu,

Planning to take 7 FULL CATs in one month is too many. You really don't need to take more than 1 CAT per week - the rest of your time should be spent on review, additional practice problems, nitpicking your 'work', etc.

Okay :)

Can you help me explain how come I scored a Q40 in gmatprep2 with just 12 incorrect qns?? I made 5 incorrect in the first 10 questions.

This algorithm is really hard to understand. I got some very easy questions wrong ( 4-5 of them). Could that be a reason?? :(

Whereas, in verbal i scored a decent 35.

Hi kuchu,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT (and on the GMAC CATs) is far more complex than most people realize, so you should not be wasting time trying to figure it out (and the number of correct answers is NOT the only factor in calculating your score).

When it comes to improving your scores though, there are some immediate issues to consider:

1) How many questions COULD/SHOULD you have gotten correct, BUT you didn't because of a silly/little mistake? Too many little mistakes will keep you from scoring at a high level.
2) Did you have to rush to finish the section and 'guess' on a bunch of questions. Improper pacing can have a great impact on your performance (and you might end up having to guess on questions that are relatively easy to answer).

hey,

I guessed on just 1/2 questions. Timing is not an issue for me. I just made some of them wrong by mistake. (silly mistake)
I am just asking is that the reason for my low score or not? I could have easily made those questions correct. I guess one should never make the mistake of underestimating the GMAT.

Hi rich,

I scored a 650 today on mgmat. Q 46 V 33 ( did 6 wrong in a sequence in verbal)

I have observed that one of my major problem is that I often make wrong in a sequence ( which leads to a low score, inspite of fewer incorrect questions)

I seriously need help with CR. I find them very confusing at the time of the actual test. What do you recommend??

Hi kuchu,

While making 1 little mistake will never 'kill' your score, making too many little mistakes, especially on questions that are relatively easy to get correct, WILL impact your score. To that end, little mistakes should be the EASIEST to 'fix', so you shouldn't ignore them and just assume that you won't make those same mistakes next time - you have to make some fundamental changes to how you do your 'work' (to eliminate the possibility that a silly mistake can occur).

Since you've mentioned CR, I'd like to know more about how you currently deal with that question type:

1) What practice materials have you used for your CR 'training'?
2) Do you have a particular strategy/approach for dealing with a typical CR prompt (what 'steps' do you go through)?
3) How often are you just 'narrowing it down to 2 choices and then "guessing"?'

Hi, thanks for replying.

1) What practice materials have you used for your CR 'training'? - Powerscore CR
2) Do you have a particular strategy/approach for dealing with a typical CR prompt (what 'steps' do you go through)? Go through the strategy mentioned in the book. But, I find it difficult to answer the question when I dont understand the passage.
3) How often are you just 'narrowing it down to 2 choices and then "guessing"?' Most of the questions :/

Do you think it is possible for me to bring atleast a 680 in mocks in 3 weeks? Or should i postpone??

Hi kuchu,

You could easily be scoring 680+ right now; you just have to make the necessary adjustments to your work in the Verbal section- so postponing the GMAT is likely NOT necessary. If you continue to approach the section in the same ways that you have been though, then more study time will be needed (and you might end up retaking the GMAT).

That all having been said, since you couldn't properly describe the steps that you go through when handling CR prompts, my guess is that you're just trying to logically figure them out as you read them (and trying to eliminate answers to 'end up with' the correct answer, which is NOT a particularly strategic way of thinking). With your Verbal Scaled Scores, you're likely missing out on points in all 3 major Verbal categories (SC, RC and CR). You've self-diagnosed CR as your biggest 'weak area', but you could probably pick up the missing points that you're looking for in SC or RC.

Thus, you now have a couple of options:

1) Continue to use the resources that you have for the next 3 weeks and practice the tactics that they teach you.

2) Invest in some new materials and practice the tactics in THOSE materials.

Either way, you're going to have to be more organized and strategic with how you're approaching the Verbal section (you can't just keep doing practice questions over and over; you have to IMPROVE how you handle the section). If you don't think that your current materials offer enough to help you score higher, then the second option is the one that you'll need to take to raise your scores.

Hi Guys,

Here are my scores on
Kaplan
Kaptest 1 720 Q51 V29
Kaptest 2 710 Q51 V30
Kaptest 3 700 Q50 V33
Kaptest 4 700 Q50 V37
Kaptest 5 650 Q48 V36

MGMAT
MGMAT 1 650 Q42 V37
MGMAT 2 640 Q41 V36
MGMAT 3 670 Q47 V34

Is it just me or is everyone having a problem with quant on MGMAT? Are the questions difficult or do I need to prepare even more?
In kaplan, I used to complete the quant section in time with 10-11 mistakes but in MGMAT, Im able to complete only 29 questions in 75 mins and blindly guess the remaining 8 questions ( All consecutively wrong ) with 18 questions mistakes. I think my verbal is stable around 36-37.

Rich or kuchu or anyone any suggestion on how to improve further or to get atleast a 700 on MGMAT? Im just praying I dont get mgmat like quant questions on the real test. I will take up the official tests after I complete the non- official tests.

Thanks and Regards,
Ray

Hi Alchemist14,

Many Test Takers find the MGMAT CATs to be a bit more difficult than the Official GMAT, so you're not alone. That having been said, you seem to understand that the GMAC CATs are the MOST realistic CATs available, so you might want to take one of THOSE CATs next. Assuming you take that CAT in a realistic and test-like fashion, the score result should help you to properly evaluate your progress thus far.

hi rich,

I have postponed my date to 7th september. (Scheduled finally!) I want to give my best at GMAT in a single shot.

I have analysed my mocks and realised that I am consistently weak in CR. (50% accuracy). To improve CR, I am planning to focus more on quality, rather than the quantity of sums.

My plan going forward is to do sums from gmatclub(CR each type) and analyse them properly by understanding the expert replies. I also noticed that I panicked somehow while actually attempting the CR on the test, so il be timing myself, so that I get used to it.

Quants, SC, RC are okay i guess and i will be revising the concepts and give sectional tests of those.

Scored a 660 in mgmat yesterday. So, considering my baseline score as 640, I wanna take it to 700 in this one month.

Any suggestions??

Hi kuchu,

With the September Test Date, you'll likely find the extra study time to be quite helpful. Given everything that you've described, and the missing points that you're looking for in the Verbal section, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Verbal Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients finish that Study Plan in under a month, so it would fit your schedule perfectly. During that time, you'll also be able to access any of the Quant resources that interest you. You're remarkably close to a 700+ score right now, so you really just need to make the proper adjustments to how you deal with the Verbal section to get to that scoring level.
