JayanthT
Greetings, I’m a mechanical engineer with a master’s degree (not from an elite school). Currently, I have over 2 years of work experience and am interested in transitioning to finance through an MBA. Could you recommend any certifications to enhance my profile? Also, are there any groups for MBA aspirants from a technical background? Certainly can you also recommend a training plan ? I intend to apply for January 2025 intake.
Thank you,
JayanthT As a first-level advice, and one that very few people will give you, if you are serious about transitioning to finance, you should ideally try to get into some entry-level Finance roles pre-MBA to demonstrate your interest in this area. Business schools, at least the good ones, do not like that an MBA is the first time someone is trying to move out of their comfort zone. Schools outside of your home region would be all the more wary if you pitch very steep career pivots as the post-MBA objective. Business schools ideally want to see proofs that you have made the effort to try new things and initiate a career transition on your own. Depending on your interests, you may try to grab opportunities as a business analyst in a finance team at a startup and then build your profile to pitch finance as the end goal. If you are based in India, many small companies and startups have analyst roles in FP&A teams that you can target. You can also try to get into strategy roles if finance roles are not possible. Alternatively, you may get into the back research arm for a PE focused consulting company and build your financial analysis skills and network. It's going to take time and hard work. But with only two years of experience, now is the right time for you to take a step that shows as a takeoff point in your career.
Reach out should you need professional guidance.
Best wishes
