Split #1: Eliminate all answers with incorrect SV-agreement. If we have "he and others" we need the plural form "were". If we have "he with others" we need the singular form "was". Based on this insight we can eliminate answers C and E.
Split #2: Let's take a look at "suspicion of privy to be the king's escape". Does that make any sense? A person can't be some other person's escape. We find this form in answers A and B so we can eliminate both of them.
This leaves us with answer D as the correct answer.
