\(Average Speed = \frac{Total Distance }{ Total Time}\)
Statement 1: The distance of the return trip was 24% of the entire travel distance.
Let total Distance = D
Return trip distance = 0.24 D
Forward Trip distance = 0.76 D
i.e. Average speed = D / [(0.76D/36) + (0.24D/48)], We het a unique value of Average Speed hence
SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: The distance of the return trip is 100 miles
Distance of forward trip is unknown hence
NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: Option A

It's given that it took him 36 mph to move from X to Y, and 48 mph come from Y to X.
We need to find out the average speed of his entire travel.
We already know that
Average Speed=Total Distance Travelled/ Total Time Taken.
Statement 1 states that the distance of the return trip was 24% of the entire travel distance.
i.e. Average speed = (0.24D+0.66D) / [(0.66D/36) + (0.24D/48)]
And this gives a definite value for Average speed.
Hence Sufficient.
Keep AD. Cancel BCE.
Statement 2 states that the distance of the return trip is 100 miles
ie Y to X distance is 100 miles but X to Y distance is not known.
Hence Not Sufficient.
Cancel D.
Answer Is Option A
