I'm looking at a full-ride to Owen, but Kenan-Flagler isn't far behind. My post-grad aim is to enter the tech startup sphere.

My impression right now is that Nashville is the better city, but the Raleigh/Durham area is better for tech-related startups NOT related to healthcare (I don't think that I want to go into healthcare).

Also, does either school get the edge when it comes to name recognition NOT in the U.S.? (i.e. how does the Owen name stand up to Kenan-Flagler in Europe, China, etc.)

100% agree with all of teleste's points (and I am also just as biased).

I'm currently a first year MBA at Owen; last year, I came down to choosing between a full ride at KF and a full ride at Owen. In the end, it all came down to preference. It's like choosing to drive a Mercedes or a BMW-- they're both going to be awesome cars and there is no objective "right" answer. Yet, you still will find people on both sides who are huge fans of their particular brands. (The one thing to *not* do is to make the final decision based on rankings alone)

I think the most important thing to emphasize is the importance of visiting the campuses. I got a dramatically different vibe from UNC vs. Vandy. Overall, I felt like the students at Owen were more excited to be there and they felt confident the career center was going to help them get where they wanted to be. The collaborative culture was also palpable-- I think it is compounded by the small class size, the friendly atmosphere of Nashville, and the fact that a lot of people live within walking distance to Owen.

For tech startups, RTP seems like a good place to be, so if you know that's where you want to land, UNC would be a good fit. Vanderbilt also has an awesome entrepreneurship program; it's not as tech-specific, but there is certainly a large community of Owen-alum entrepreneurs in Nashville (check out the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, which Owen works closely with: https://www.ec.co/).

The last thing I will say is to keep in mind that entering a tech startup is a pretty specific aim. If you know that's what you want to do, that's awesome (and it will make your first year much easier). However, based on my experience, many people who come to B school soon change their mind about what they want to do; for example I applied to B school as Brand Management but now I'm doing an internship in Management Consulting. A friend started as consulting and is now doing HOP. Another started as Finance and switched to consulting. Luckily, Owen has been able to do an awesome job of placing me for Consulting; however, the possibility of me switching career paths was not something I originally took into account. Again, if you're 100% set on tech start ups, then no need to take this into account.

Overall, Owen has been an incredible experience and I wouldn't change it for anything. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to reply or DM.
