Good luck humblewinner and DrSatisfaction. If my R1s don't convert, I might apply to Oxford as well. However, humblewinner, are you aware of the visa issues in UK? I know LBS grads qualify for the work visa automatically but I dont know how difficult is it for Oxford grads. Let me know if you know more on the subject.

Also, if you guys dont mind sharing, can you tell if you picked a single event for Essay2 or it can be 2-3 events related to one theme? How did you cover up describing your leadership qualities etc - did you put it all in Essay1 only or did you weave your professional achievements + insights into the 2nd essay as well?

Btw, how does Oxford look upon career switchers?

Hello eowyn, As far as I know there is no difference between an lbs grad or an oxford grad with respect to visa.

For Oxford essay2, I choose one event I could weave my volunteering experiences around it and how it fits into my goals.

Hi

moreover, i see the below in the FAQ section on oxford said website

Who should write the letters of recommendation?
Anyone who has worked closely with you in the recent past. At least one letter of recommendation should be from someone who can attest to your professional experience, such as a current or former employer. The second letter may be from either a professor or someone else in your professional background. Letters of reference should not be character references or from friends.
10Back To Top
Is there a recommendation form or specific format for letters of recommendation?
There is no recommendation form; a standard reference letter is sufficient.

The Cambridge recommender letter asks the recommender to specify why s/he has ranked the person outstanding/exceptional/below average in certain categories, that is, if you're graded really good or really bad at something the recommender has to explain it. If my memory serves me correctly, along with the usual questions it also asks what the recommender likes the best and the least in the applicant, as well as where s/he sees the applicant ten years from now.

The FAQ must be updated. As far as I know, Oxford accepts only online recommendations.

Thanks all. Will have to wait and see the others. At first I thought I had clear first choice but after speaking to the different teams, I'm torn between them. All offering things different things that I'm looking for. Good luck to all the others who are waiting:)

for essay 2 i focused only on a single event and how it related to my life.

Dr. Satisfaction - If you don't mind sharing, how long ago was this event? In my opinion, we can best differentiate ourselves by talking about our long-term passions, which usually result from an event/experience of the past.

I'm not sure how much can I write if I write about something that has influenced me recently.

That's a good point, and I agree, past experiences that we've had time to reflect upon are the ones that mostly shape who we become.

However, I have a feeling the adcom also wants to see how we react to changes and stimuli from our environment, whether we think about current events and how responsive we are to them. This kind of dynamics is important in business, where the pace is quick and one has to respond and adapt to the constantly changing world. Thoughts on recent events also show a curiosity and a willingness to think about what is happening around us.

I think I'm going to lash out a little and write about the construction of the society of my home country. I recently read a book which refuted the general opinion that we only have a (very broad) middle class in our country. It made me think very differently about the organization of the society in my home country, and about my family and its roots. I think I'll also tie it together with a general concept of class system in society, something which has interested me the past few years.

I wrote about a book I read recently and went into detail about how it applies to my whole life, and why I believe my career goals are the perfect fit for me. I also wrote about how I see an Oxford degree helping me get to my long term goals and how I see the protential process evolving. At the end I added in basically what I see my future role in society is, and how I can make an impact in the world, given my passions and career goals.

Overall I think this was one of the best essays I've written for all my apps, mainly because of the freedom I got with the 2000 word essay and a very open ended question. Good luck with your essay. :)

Me too :-D I really really hope the R2 interview requests will be sent out before christmas. That way an interview invite would be the perfect way to begin holiday celebrations, and a ding depression would drown in the same holiday celebrations.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. It's exam season at the school, and I was tied up with a few other things.

Good luck to all GC'ers who are awaiting Oxford's R1 results that will be released on Friday! If any of you are visiting the school, drop me a line and I will be happy to show you around the school (and Oxford if I have time).
