Hi, I would like to share my interview experience - a bit late, but maybe still useful for the R3 folks.

I choose to go to Oxford for the interview and I combined my interview with an Open Day event. The Open Day registration started at 10:00 and until 10:30 I mingled with prospetive students and other interview candidates (easily to recognise, we the guys with suit & tie! :)). The Admission team started with a general presentation about the admission process for the first 3/4 h and then Stephen Chambers, director of MBA program, started an in-depth presentation of the MBA programme ...

... which unfortunately I could attend for only 5 minutes, as my interview was scheduled for 11:30. The interview was conducted by an associate fellow and career sector consultant in corporate finance & strategic planning - my interest areas post-MBA. She was very kind and friendly (I remember that my chair was directly into the light and she insisted that I should change position to feel more comfortable), started by appreciating my analysis from essay no.2 and then with followed the typical questions: why an MBA? why now and not earlier? why Oxford?. Then she asked what my team mates would think that are my strengths & weaknesses and to give an example of leadership. Another question was what would be the most challenging part for me during the MBA? After that, she asked if I had some questions for her - I questioned about the '09 recruitment statistics.

After 30' sharp, the interview ended and I returned to the Open Day event, which continued with the students panel, a lunch with students, a lecture in Economics and a final presentation by Derek Walker, director of careers.
An interesting part was that in the afternoon I met with a folk who apparently had an interview with the same lady later in the day, but he said in his case she was very direct and unfriendly.

If would like more details about each part, please ask.

Thanks a11c. Since this interview will be conducted by an adcom member or faculty, I'm curious if it will be much more detailed compared to the interviews I've had with other schools. For example, I am concerned about being asked technical questions regarding financial markets given that I come from an asset management background.

They probably won't ask you specific technical questions. Oxford's interview was pretty generic and they primarily focused on what you've done, why you wanted to attend Oxford and what your future goals are.

I agree with Mars, I don't think will be asked technical questions but you may expect questions regarding what are the specific challenges for your company or industry, what strategies would you adopt to overcome challenges and how you argument for one stance or another.

Congratulations to all interview invite holders and my warmest sympathy for those who got dinged.

I am beginning my preparations for nex year, but on a light note: I'm almost through Peter Robinson's Snapshots from Hell: the making of an MBA (Stanford in late 1980s). Right now I don't know whether the book makes me more scared or amused.

I'm guessing that you interviewed with Sarah? I did as well, she was very nice and made the entire interview a comfortable experience. My interview with LBS however...wow it was an entirely different experience. And not in a good way.
nope, it wasn't Sarah. I agree with you, a lot different experience with LBS - for me the interview was fine, but the arrangements and booking were hasty/very last minute, due to poor communication & planning from LBS staff.

Hi All,

Thank you....all of you....this thread is pretty helpful for prospective students. I am an R3 applicant to Said and have been invited to interview. I chose to interview over the telephone. As you can imagine, I am trying to anticipate their questions. So..

- What type of questions can I expect, depending on whether its a faculty member, adcom or sector consultant?
- Did someone say R3 interviewers more likely to be faculty?
- I am 33 and an entrepreneur, and will go back to my own business after graduation. Should I expect them to focus on my industry (engineering), or strengths and weaknesses or what?
- What is the Said policy on deferral (in case there are visa issues for R3 applicants) ?
- Is there anyone else from Toronto !?
- What are the financing options for R3 applicants from Canada? Is it true that there are no scholarships available for R3 applicants?

Thank you !

My interviewer was a career adviser, and so my questions also circulated mainly around how I see myself in the future and how the school would help me achieve my goals. There were some basic questions about strengths, weaknesses, reasons for my education/career background etc. In general my Oxford intervew experience was much lighter than my Cambridge experience, but it seems to vary very much: one guy who interviewed at Oxford got an older man who apparently was known to make interviews a rough time. He had thrown lots of hypothetical questions, asking the candidate to solve problems and argue for his/her opinions. The candidate seemed like a smart guy with lots of potential, but he exited the interview room in shambles.

Hi khagan,
I'll try to answer some of your questions:
- What type of questions can I expect, depending on whether its a faculty member, adcom or sector consultant?
It seems that the general questions are more used than the specific or scenario-based ones.
- I am 33 and an entrepreneur, and will go back to my own business after graduation. Should I expect them to focus on my industry (engineering), or strengths and weaknesses or what?
I think you could expect to be asked why do you want an MBA, why now and what are the specific areas in which a SBS MBA will help you in developing your business.
- What is the Said policy on deferral (in case there are visa issues for R3 applicants) ?
AFAIK SBS do not grant deferrals, but you'd better check with the admission officers.
- Is there anyone else from Toronto !?
There are several admits from Canada, including Toronto.
- What are the financing options for R3 applicants from Canada? Is it true that there are no scholarships available for R3 applicants?
All the SBS scholarships and most of Oxford Univ. scholarships are granted now.

Hi A11C99,

Thank you for responding !

What do you mean when you say "All the SBS scholarships and most of Oxford Univ. scholarships are granted now"....so R3 applicants are considered for these scholarships also or is it too late and they have granted all awards already ?

Thanks a bunch.

The deadlines to apply for the scholarships expired before the R3 decisions. This means that only those who were admitted on or before Rd2 could have applied for scholarships. R3 admits will not be eligible to apply.

Each round has it's own deadline for applying for scholarships. So the deadline that passed is for R2. This is common sense.

Ravi, I'm in the same boat. I did some research and so far, it looks like you should expect the following,

- The interviewer will be a faculty member, member of admissions staff or a sector consultant
- They will be strict about the time limit (I am assuming you will be interviewing over the phone)
- Questions will range from the standard types (Why MBA/Why Oxford/Why now) to more specific discussion about your goals, strengths/weaknesses and anything else that jumps out from your essays/application
- Admit rate in R3 at Said seems to be around 65% for those invited to interview because their yield from R1/R2 is in the high 60's.

Good Luck !

Hi khagan. Could you elaborate on how you arrive at the point quoted above? (based on what data) ? Thanks

I read it somewhere in this thread and I do not have any data to support this contention beyond what I have read on this forum and others. So I won't bet my life on it !

I've seen numbers between 50% and 65% (I think BuffDaddy on this forum, may have commented on this also). Oxford seems to be a bit of a black hole as far as data is concerned anyway. No acceptance, yield data available in general. Would like to know if you have an alternative dataset or viewpoint.

Yeah the only info I could find on the web was from a 2004 admissions chat, where a representative stated this:
"About 50% of applicants are invited to interview - about 75% of those receive offers."

I don't know how accurate this would be today given the increase in applications but I would imagine that if you are invited to interview you still have a greater than 50% chance of being admitted.

True. Doesn't look like they have too many applications though compared to some of the schools state side, but then again the class size is pretty small. I think the highest number I have seen so far is 1400 applications for 240 seats. I am assuming that they have about 40 seats left to fill after R1/R2. They probably admitted 300 and received 200 deposits. So, say another 70 interviews for 40 spots ?!
