I got the Skoll email as well. Not in the mood to write another essay though. I think there is probably 1 scholarship left (more conjecture !!!). Its probably hard to give up Oxford for another school, especially if you have a free ride, unless you have a free ride elsewhere. But who knows.

I thought it was interesting that they only have one possible date for face to face interviews, meaning that they're not really expecting veyr many people to choose this. I wonder if this is different from other rounds (maybe someone out there can tell us?).
Yes, it seems to be very much different. We R2 applicants got to choose from a list of interview dates, and to indicate whether we wanted the interview to take place on the telephone or in person.

Interesting. Something else that occurred to me is that at this point there no longer is a disadvantage from having applied for the 3rd round. What I mean is that if round 3 was more competitive than the other two rounds, it was probably more competitive in the sense that it was harder to get an interview. However, once you get the interview you probably have the same likelihood of getting in than someone who was invited to interview during the first or second rounds.

Would anyone disagree?

Ravi, I'm in the same boat. I did some research and so far, it looks like you should expect the following,

- The interviewer will be a faculty member, member of admissions staff or a sector consultant
- They will be strict about the time limit (I am assuming you will be interviewing over the phone)
- Questions will range from the standard types (Why MBA/Why Oxford/Why now) to more specific discussion about your goals, strengths/weaknesses and anything else that jumps out from your essays/application
- Admit rate in R3 at Said seems to be around 65% for those invited to interview because their yield from R1/R2 is in the high 60's.

Good Luck !

Hi Khagan,

Thanks for the response and good luck for your interview, did you get any confirmation of the date ?. Who really is a sector consultant ? I am planning to appear for an in-person interview, does it have any advantage over telephonic ?

Cheers,

Ravi

Hi Ravi,

No confirmation yet. Not sure who a sector consultant is. Sounds like they outsource. Based on what I've read so far there does not seem to be an advantage to a face to face interview, but it probably helps. Best of luck !

The sector consultants, as I understand it, are people that either work with or for the careers office, who have considerable experience with hiring in the various fields (consulting, finance, marketing, what have you). So their perspective is, "will this person be someone who is likely to become more employable with an MBA from us?" If accepted, they might be the same people you work with for advice on how to interview, or what companies to target for your post-MBA job.

I think the key advantage to face-to-face is it's a clear way to show the school you're serious about them. That probably matters less in R3 than in earlier rounds (because there's less of a chance you could go somewhere else at this stage, even if you wanted to), but even then I think that there are plenty of ways for people doing distance interviews to make clear how much they care about the school, so it's not that big of an advantage (of course if you live in London it would not look too good to take a distance interview!). The real bonus is you get to see the school in-person, which is a big plus for you in deciding that you want to go there.

This is exactly the attitude my interviewer had. I experienced it as very helpful, because since she clearly considered me (I was admitted in the end), I was not afraid to ask her questions about how I would be able to network and get the most of my year at Oxford.

I also agree that face-to-face is a clear advantage. It's just how the human mind works. If we meet a person, the impression, both positive and negative, is so much more wholesome than if we talk to the person over the phone. However, I am sure that professional admission interviewers are able to normalize this bias, at least to an extent.

Just wondering what some of the ways to reinforce interest and commitment are from a distance ? Any thoughts ?

I received the interview confirmation.

Whats weird is that they gave me my fourth choice interview date despite the fact that I replied with my choices within a few minutes of the interview-invite email.

Can any current student provide me insight on the career services offered at SBS? I'm especially curious to know about Said's placement record in investment banking in locations besides London.

Just finished Oxford's interview. It went quite well. The interviewer was nice and we talked quite a bit about my post-MBA plans, WE, and life experiences. She actually said something tantamount to, "it's refreshing that you have a clear post-MBA goal. Most applicants want a three level change: change job, change country, change sector"

Note: if you are interviewing for Oxford, it may be a good idea not to push a triple change strategy.

I think I remember another discussion about the triple-goal, either here on GMATClub or elsewhere. The conclusion was that you should only push on a sector and country change during a high season in global economy. To consider such massive changes right now makes it harder for the school to see you successfully placed within three months of graduation.

Well, it looks like the post-interview conversion rate is 60% plus based on what I have read, for Oxford. Not sure about Cambridge though.

60% rate can seem reassuring but I had a great interview with another school with a similar acceptance rate and still got rejected .... it's a coin-toss, no guarantees!

Was it R3 or similar at a European/UK school ? You're right of course.
