FROM Personal MBA Coach: HBS Application Deadlines: 2024-2025
Harvard Business School released the deadlines for the upcoming 2024-2025 business school application season, sharing the HBS application deadlines .

2024-2025 Harvard Business School Application Deadlines
Round 1: September 4, 2024

Round 2: January 6, 2025

While we wait for the school to confirm this year’s essay questions, take a look at last year’s essays and Personal MBA Coach’s tips on how to tackle them to get a feel for what to expect.

Harvard Business School Admissions Essay Prompt
“As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA Program?”

“How do I get into HBS” is one of the most common questions we hear from MBA applicants.

The HBS essay is arguably one of the most difficult to tackle, given its open-ended nature.

This application essay is an open invitation to show HBS what is truly interesting about your profile. This question allows you to focus and elaborate on what is important to you. Think about the HBS essay as your chance to let them “meet” the real you — the authentic person behind the resume and application questions.

As everyone is likely well aware, HBS educates and admits leaders. It goes without saying that whatever story or stories you choose should show your leadership and demonstrate how you have excelled across disciplines.

HBS students will emerge as leaders in the areas they are most passionate about. They will drive change. They are not afraid to stand up for their beliefs. They show courage. You want the admissions committee to see and understand how you personify these traits.

Personal MBA Coach advises applicants to watch this video on the HBS case method to re-enforce how critical leadership and diversity of thought is to HBS. Keep this in mind, along with Harvard’s other stated values of analytics and community, as you craft your HBS essay.

[youtube2]p>
While[/youtube2]

The HBS essay will be VERY different for everyone. Do not fall into the trap of trying to write an essay like one you have read in the past or like your friend is writing. There will be a wide range of successful essays this year, and proper execution will be the key rather than simply the content alone.

While HBS retained the 900-word limit in an effort to eliminate any stress about how much is too much to write, most essays that work will fall somewhere between 700-900 words. Consider quality over quantity. If you can write a solid 600-word essay that is powerful and moving, do not feel the need to lengthen it. We have helped many applicants write successful essays on the shorter side.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Stanford GSB Essay Advice and Application Deadlines: 2024-2025
Last year, there were two Stanford GSB essays, which have a combined word limit of 1050 words. It appears that this year Stanford lowered the word count for essay B. It is suggested to allocate up to 650 words on Essay A and up to 350 words on Essay B.

Stanford had already shortened the combined word limit a few years ago, a sign that the school encourages applicants to remain focused and concise in their answers. Below, please find Personal MBA Coach’s advice on how to approach the two Stanford GSB essay questions.

The Upcoming Stanford GSB Application Deadlines 2024-2025 Are Coming Soon
2024-2025 Stanford GSB Essays:
Stanford GSB Essay A: What matters most to you, and why? (650 words suggested)
For this essay, we would like you to reflect deeply and write from the heart. Once you’ve identified what matters most to you, help us understand why. You might consider, for example, what makes this so important to you? What people, insights, or experiences have shaped your perspectives?

This first Stanford MBA essay is arguably one of the hardest MBA application questions across all schools. This challenging question requires candidates to speak from the heart.

As Stanford advises, think more about your values here and WHY you made the choices you have made than WHAT you have done. Personal MBA Coach recommends you do some serious soul searching before starting. Think about what you are most passionate about. What drives you to get out of bed each morning? If you could spend your time as you wish, what would you do? Ideally, you have acted on this passion, and it extends throughout multiple aspects of your life.

Then, think carefully about why this matters to you. Did you have an experience as a child? Are you following a passion held by others in your family?

Finally, once you have established the why, you should include some WHAT here. After all, a passion or cause that you have done nothing with will not be very believable. Remember though, this is only PART of this personal essay.

Stanford GSB Essay B: Why Stanford? (350 words suggested)
Describe your aspirations and how your Stanford GSB experience will help you realize them. If you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, use Essay B to address your interest in both programs.

In this short Stanford MBA essay, candidates have a lot to cover. First, you should set up why you want an MBA. Naturally, this would include what your goals are and what skills you need to develop to achieve these goals.

Then, establish how Stanford will help you to fill these skill gaps. Once again, be specific! Name classes, clubs, programs, etc. and how they will help. Finally, be sure to articulate what attracts you to Stanford’s culture. We realize this is a tall order with a suggested word count of only 400 words, so be succinct.

Unlike other schools, Stanford gives the candidate discretion on how to divide the 1050 words (1100 for dual degree candidates) across the two essays. The breakdown above is a suggestion and, in general, this is an ideal breakdown for most candidates.

In addition, there is one optional question in the Stanford GSB application.

Stanford GSB Optional Question: Think about times you’ve created a positive impact, whether in professional, extracurricular, academic, or other settings. What was your impact? What made it significant to you or to others?
In the Essays section of the application, we ask you to tell us about who you are and how you think Stanford will help you achieve your aspirations. We are also interested in learning about the things you have done that are most meaningful to you. If you would like to go beyond your resume to discuss some of your contributions more fully, you are welcome to share up to three examples. (Up to 1,200 characters, or approximately 200 words, for each example)

For many other top MBA programs, Personal MBA Coach advises clients to answer optional essays only to discuss unique circumstances. Take a look at our blog on optional essay questions to learn more.

However, the requirements for addressing one or more of the optional Stanford MBA essays are not quite as stringent. You can use these optional essays to share other aspects of your candidacy not included in your essays.

That said, use these Stanford MBA essays sparingly. Less continues to be more here.

Answer these questions only if you have something very powerful to add that is not already included elsewhere in your Stanford GSB application.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: NYU Stern Essay Tips and Application Deadlines: 2024-2025
NYU Stern For candidates who have their hearts set on relocating to (or remaining in) New York City, NYU Stern is a great option. This year, US News & World Report ranked NYU Stern the #7 full-time MBA program and #4 part-time MBA program.

Unlike many other top programs, the NYU Stern full-time MBA has a round 2 application deadline in October. This option is great if you cannot make the round 1 deadline but prefer not to wait until January to submit everything.

The NYU Stern Application Deadlines Are:
Round 1: September 16, 2024

Round 2: October 16, 2024

Round 3: January 16, 2025

Round 4: April 16, 2025

Please see below for Personal MBA Coach’s tips on how to answer the NYU Stern essays.

Personal MBA Coach’s NYU Stern Essay Tips:
“Our Stern essay questions give you the opportunity to more fully present yourself to the Admissions Committee and to provide insight into your experiences, goals, and thought processes.”

NYU Stern Essay 1: Change: _________ it

(350 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)In today’s global business environment, the only constant is change. Using NYU Stern’s brand call to action, we want to know how you view change. Change: _____ it. Fill in the blank with a word of your choice. Why does this word resonate with you? How will you embrace your own personal tagline while at Stern? Examples:

 • Change: Dare it.
 • Change: Dream it.
 • Change: Drive it.
 • Change: Empower it.
 • Change: Manifest it.
 • Change: [Any word of your choice.]

With a short word limit and a lot to cover, this NYU Stern essay question is a challenging one.

As you answer this question, pay careful attention to the opening: Stern lets you know it is looking to learn about your “experiences, goals, and thought processes.”

This means both the what and the why are important here.

As you pick a tagline, be sure to consider why this approach to change is meaningful to you. Naturally, you should be able to connect it to a part of your experience. Show the reader how you have lived this tagline.

It is also crucial that you cover what you will do moving forward, both at NYU Stern and beyond! Tell the reader HOW you will drive change.

There is a lot to cover here so use your words carefully and avoid cliches.

NYU Stern Essay 2: Personal Expression (a.k.a. “Pick Six”): Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:

 • A brief introduction or overview of your “Pick Six” (no more than 3 sentences).
 • Six images that help illustrate who you are.
 • A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.
Note: Your visuals may include photos, infographics, drawings, collages, or any other images that best describe you. Your document must be uploaded as a single PDF. The essay cannot be sent in physical form or be linked to a website.

If you are seeking NYU Stern Pick Six examples, know that there are no wrong answers here as this is your chance to let the reader into your world. You do want to include a well-rounded mix of photos that tell the reader more about you. Treat this as a personal story essay, just narrated in a different medium.

While a mix of personal and professional photos can work well, some candidates will include only personal details. Think about what makes you unique and what values drive you as you select these images. Finally, follow the directions. One sentence is ONE sentence. Have fun with this and feel free to be creative.

NYU Stern Essay 3: Additional Information (optional)

(250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment, IELTS or TOEFL, or any other relevant information.

Along with the NYU Stern full-time MBA, those interested in NYU Stern also can pursue a Fashion & Luxury MBATech MBAExecutive MBA, or Part-time MBA. Personal MBA Coach has been helping clients get into NYU Stern, alongside other top business schools, for 16 years.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: University of Virginia Darden MBA Application Essay Analysis 2024-2025
The UVA Darden MBA application essays are now live! Do you want to attend an MBA program that puts collaboration and teamwork at the forefront of your experience? If so, UVA Darden School of Business may be a great choice for you.

Upcoming UVA Darden MBA Deadlines Are:
Early Action: September 5, 2024

Round 1: October 2, 2024

Round 2: January 7, 2025

Round 3: April 2, 2025

2024-2025 Darden MBA Application Essays Are Below:
Community of Belonging: What would you want your classmates to know about you that is not on your resume? (100 words)
Personal MBA Coach advises most applicants to use this first UVA Darden essay to share a personal aspect of their candidacy as opposed to talking about their professional leadership or track record. Topics discussed here should enhance (not repeat or conflict with) your “Personal Story” and should allow admissions committee members to learn more about you.

This is not the time to present a laundry list of hobbies, passions or accomplishments. Instead, focus on what makes you unique. Think about how you might add to the diversity (think literal diversity and/or diversity of perspective) on your learning team.

Be specific and keep in mind that actions are the best predictors of future behavior and provide examples wherever possible. Go beyond just sharing details about you and include the “so what?”

For example, if you were raised in a unique environment, explain this to the reader but then push further. Consider how this shaped who you are today, what makes you unique and what you will bring to the table for your learning team.

Regardless of the topic selected, show the reader that you are someone your peers will be excited to learn with!

Inclusive Leadership: Please describe a tangible example that illuminates your experience promoting an inclusive environment and what you would bring to creating a welcoming, global community at Darden. (300 words)
This question covers a topic that continues to be important to leading MBA programs: inclusion. A personal or professional example would work here. However, Personal MBA Coach encourages candidates to look at their applications holistically when selecting a story to discuss. You want to ensure this story fits with who you are and that your Darden application includes a nice balance of personal and professional stories.

Remember that inclusion is a broad term here. Do not limit yourself to current event topics unless they are relevant to your story!

Ensure that you limit the amount of time spent on setup and instead focus on your thoughts and actions. While remaining authentic is important, think about the qualities Darden is looking for in applicants and make sure the story selected clearly SHOWS how you demonstrated them.

While the bulk of this essay should be focused on the story itself, be sure to leave time to discuss the implications of this experience and how this experience changed your leadership style and has positioned you to contribute on campus.

Careers With Purpose: At this time how would you describe your short-term, post-MBA goal in terms of industry, function, geography, company size and/or mission and how does it align with the long-term vision you have for your career?  (200 words)
This question is a straightforward career goals question. With this short essay, be specific and include both your ideal position and organization type. Articulate what you hope to accomplish in this desired role and why this objective is interesting and important to you.

Darden once again specifically asks candidates about their long-term vision. Given this, be sure to discuss what you hope to learn in the short term and how this experience will prepare you to achieve your long-term goals.

Struggling to articulate your goals? Watch this quick tips video with Scott Edinburgh, Personal MBA Coach’s founder, for advice:

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Dartmouth Tuck Application Deadlines and Essay Advice: 2024-2025

Dartmouth Tuck has officially announced its essay questions for the 2024-2025 application cycle!

Same as last year, Tuck has announced two deadlines for the first and second application rounds. Those who apply before the first deadline are guaranteed an interview. Personal MBA Coach welcomes this change as it encourages applicants not to submit at the last minute (which is something we advise for all of our clients). We recommend that those who have Tuck high on their list take advantage of the interview guarantee.

The upcoming Tuck application deadlines are:
Round 1 with Interview Guaranteed/Regular Deadline: September 3, 2024/September 26, 2024

Round 2 with Interview Guaranteed/Regular Deadline: December 2, 2024/January 6, 2025

Round 3 Regular Deadline: March 26, 2025

The 2024-2025 Dartmouth Tuck MBA Application Summary
Tuck shares the following recommendations:

The best responses to essay prompts are clear, succinct, forthright, thoughtful, genuine, and so distinctly personal that only you could have written them. We expect that your essays are entirely accurate and exclusively yours. Using tools or professional services to create content that is not your own violates Tuck’s admissions policies and Academic Honor Principle.

Once again, Tuck asks applicants to answer three required essay questions.

Please see below for Personal MBA Coach’s tips on how to answer the Dartmouth Tuck MBA essays.

Dartmouth Tuck MBA Application Essay 1:
Why are you pursuing an MBA and why now? How will the distinct Tuck MBA contribute to achieving your career goals and aspirations? (300 words)

There is a lot to fit into this short 300-word essay. While candidates will share their goals in the short answer questions, they may want to use this space to elaborate on these goals. If you need help thinking through your goals, we have published a blog with our general tips.

Next, candidates should reflect upon the skills they will need to succeed in this desired career and SPECIFICALLY how Tuck will help them. Be sure to do your research into everything Tuck has to offer and discuss what you will take advantage of on campus and how. Tuck has a unique program, and it is more than just being close-knit. As always, avoid vague statements here.

Finally, be sure to explain to the Tuck admissions committee why NOW is the right time for you to pursue an MBA. Perhaps you have reached a plateau that you need an MBA to overcome. Or, maybe you recently had an experience that confirmed you are ready to change careers. Regardless of your personal circumstances, be sure to at least briefly discuss that here.

Dartmouth Tuck MBA Application Essay 2:
Tell us who you are. How have your values and experiences shaped your identity and character? How will your background contribute to the diverse Tuck culture and community? (300 words)

For this question, candidates should reflect upon what makes them unique. For some candidates, this uniqueness may be obvious and directly tied to their demographic or socioeconomic background. If this applies to you, be sure not only to share this background but also talk about how it has shaped your values.

For other candidates, this uniqueness may be less obvious, and candidates are urged to reflect upon their personal story when determining what to share. In prior years, Personal MBA Coach has suggested that applicants consider hobbies, passions, skills and aspirations for Tuck’s second essay. While these topics are all still fair game, we urge applicants to dig deeper this year. Take the time to reflect on how these experiences have shaped you.

Finally, notice the call to discuss your contributions to Tuck. This means you should discuss the role you will play within the class of 2027 and how you will specifically improve life at Tuck.

Dartmouth Tuck MBA Application Essay 3:
Describe a time you meaningfully contributed to someone else’s sense of inclusion in your professional or personal community. (300 words)

Recognizing that actions speak louder than words, Tuck has previously asked for an example of how applicants have demonstrated the school’s values (telling applicants that Tuck students are encouraging, collaborative and empathic).

With only 300 words, select a story that is easy to set up. You do not want to use many words explaining the situation; instead, you want to SHOW your actions. This question is yet another opportunity for candidates to allow the Tuck admissions directors to assess what studying and living with them would be like.

If you do not have an obvious example here, it is ok to think of inclusion broadly. Personal, professional, volunteer, or other extracurricular examples would all work well.

Dartmouth Tuck Optional Essay:
Please provide any additional insight or information that you have not addressed elsewhere (e.g., atypical choice of references, factors affecting academic performance, unexplained job gaps or changes). Complete this question only if you feel your candidacy is not fully represented by this application. (300 words)

Tuck also has an optional question that should be answered only by those candidates with unique circumstances. Read our advice on how to address optional essays here.

Dartmouth Tuck Reapplicant Essay:
How have you strengthened your candidacy since you last applied? Please reflect on how you have grown personally and professionally. (300 words maximum)

FROM Personal MBA Coach: MIT Sloan Application Advice and Deadlines: 2024-2025
MIT Sloan released the application deadlines for August 2025 entry.

Please find them below, along with Personal MBA Coach’s advice on how to tackle the MIT Sloan application.

MIT Sloan’s Application Deadlines 2024-2025 Are:
Round 1: September 30, 2024

Round 2: January 14, 2025

Round 3: April 7, 2025

MIT Sloan has not yet confirmed its application requirements. Keep reading for last year’s tips, and check back for more!

MIT Sloan Cover Letter:
MIT Sloan seeks students whose personal characteristics demonstrate that they will make the most of the incredible opportunities at MIT, both academic and non-academic. We are on a quest to find those whose presence will enhance the experience of other students. We seek thoughtful leaders with exceptional intellectual abilities and the drive and determination to put their stamp on the world. We welcome people who are independent, authentic, and fearlessly creative — true doers. We want people who can redefine solutions to conventional problems, and strive to preempt unconventional dilemmas with cutting-edge ideas. We demand integrity and respect passion.

Taking the above into consideration, please submit a cover letter seeking a place in the Sloan MIT MBA program. Your letter should conform to a standard business correspondence, include one or more professional examples that illustrate why you meet the desired criteria above, and be addressed to the Admissions Committee (300 words or fewer, excluding address and salutation).

Applicants wondering how to get into MIT Sloan should keep in mind that the MIT Sloan cover letter requires quite a different approach from other MBA application essays. Candidates really need to reflect on their most significant accomplishments here and make clear what they will bring to the table once they arrive at Sloan.

We advise Sloan MBA candidates to approach this cover letter as they would any professional cover letter. Ask for a place in the MIT Sloan class and tell the reader who you are. This is not the time to repeat your resume but, as with any cover letter, provide greater depth about your character and accomplishments.

With such a short letter, you will need to choose each word carefully and select the most compelling stories to tell. Think about MIT’s values as you write this letter and consider instances where you exhibited innovative thinking and leadership.

Finally, note SPECIFICALLY how you will bring this experience to the Sloan MIT MBA program and how you will use it to create meaningful contributions within the community.

MIT Sloan Video Statement:
Introduce yourself to your future classmates. Here’s your chance to put a face with a name, let your personality shine through, be conversational, be yourself. We can’t wait to meet you!

Videos should adhere to the following guidelines:

 • No more than 1 minute (60 seconds) in length
 • Single take (no editing)
 • Speaking directly to the camera
 • Do not include background music or subtitles
Note: While we ask you to introduce yourself to your future classmates in this video, the video will not be shared and is for use in the application process only.

Use your MIT Sloan MBA video essay to share personal aspects of your candidacy. This script is NOT the place to address why Sloan is a good fit or to cover details already included in your resume or your cover letter. Instead, think about what make you unique and what your passions and/or hobbies are. You truly should be INTRODUCING yourself to you classmates here.

For the video component of your MIT Sloan application, it is most important to be yourself. This is also a chance for admissions committee members to evaluate applicants’ physical presence and delivery. Keep this in mind as you develop your video and consider factors such as audio quality, demeanor, and fluency in addition to the content itself!

While you do not want to memorize the video statement and sound overly rehearsed, we do advise that candidates write out some thoughts/bullets in advance of filming and to practice multiple times!

Personal MBA Coach includes analyses of sample videos in its comprehensive packages; reach out today to schedule a consultation and find out more!

MIT Sloan Organizational Chart:
To help us better understand your current role and the impact that you have on your team and department, please submit an organizational chart. We should be able to clearly understand the internal structure of your organization, where you sit in your organization, and your line of reporting.

 • Organizational charts should not be more than two pages and keep the following in mind: Give us as much detail as possible (names, titles, etc.) but it’s ok to redact names if you need to.
 • Please circle your role in red so that your position is easily identifiable.
 • Make sure we can easily identify where you are, to whom you report, and if applicable, who reports to you.
 • If your recommender or references are on your organizational chart (they may not be, and that’s ok!), please highlight them for us.
 • If you are a consultant, entrepreneur, or affiliated with the military review our FAQs for suggestions on how to approach the organizational chart.
Please upload an organizational chart that outlines the internal structure of your place of employment. Limit to two pages.

Click here to view a sample MIT organizational chart.

There is no right or wrong format for the organizational chart. The key is that is it easy to follow and understand and shows your direct reports (if any) and whom you report to. Most companies should have a chart that you can work from.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: HBS Application Deadlines & Essay Analysis: 2024-2025
Harvard Business School has opened its 2024-2025 MBA application. As expected, for the first time in recent history, HBS has changed its required MBA essay questions.  Instead of one open-ended essay, applicants are now required to answer three short and focused questions. This is a significant change for HBS, which historically asked applicants to answer a much longer personal story–focused essay. Though overall this new application requires less writing, these new questions are challenging, so applicants will need to think carefully about what they portray to HBS admissions.

HBS changed its essay questions last year for 2+2 applicants (also asking for fewer shorter essays with similar intent) so these new essay questions are not a surprise to Personal MBA Coach.

Below Personal MBA Coach shares details on what has changed and how to approach these new essay questions.

It is also important to note that HBS changed its testing requirements for 2024-2025 applicants. HBS will be accepting the GMAT Focus (currently the only GMAT exam available). However, applicants submitting the GMAT Focus will be required to also submit a writing assessment.

Here are the full details shared by HBS on this new requirement:

Note on the GMAT Focus: Writing is an essential component of the MBA program. Therefore, to be admitted to HBS all students must have an official writing assessment. You can satisfy this with a valid GRE, GMAT 10th Edition, or English language test score. If you only submitted the GMAT Focus, which lacks a writing section, HBS will contact you at the interview stage about taking the separate GMAC Business Writing Assessment. If you wish to take the GMAC Business Writing Assessment before knowing your interview status, you will be able to do so beginning July 2024. Because the written application has opportunities to showcase your writing abilities (e.g. essays, short answers), you will not be at a disadvantage if you do not include the GMAC Business Writing Assessment before you are invited to interview.

2024-2025 Harvard Business School Application Deadlines
Round 1: September 4, 2024

Round 2: January 6, 2025

2024-2025 HBS MBA Program Application Essay Questions Are As Follows:
HBS Essay 1: Business-Minded Essay: Please reflect on how your experiences have influenced your career choices and aspirations and the impact you will have on the businesses, organizations, and communities you plan to serve. (up to 300 words)
For this first HBS essay, naturally applicants should expand on their career aspirations. However, more importantly, they should explain the why behind this career. Tell HBS admissions what prepared you for this career and what motivates you to be successful. You career should be meaningful to you, and a strong essay will show this.

The second part of this essay focuses on the so-what. HBS wants to know how you will impact others in your career. Personal MBA Coach has shared how business schools are increasingly looking for applicants who understand the role businesses play in society as a whole, and this essay confirms that. As you think about your goals, think about how you will make not only your immediate company better but also how you will drive greater good in your career.

HBS Essay 2: Leadership-Focused Essay: What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (up to 250 words)
This option is the closest to the open-ended “personal story” essay that HBS is known for. However, with only 250 words to use and a leadership focus, applicants will need to be very succinct as they talk about their past. You might consider your background, upbringing or extracurricular experiences here. If you need help thinking through your own personal story, check out this blog from Personal MBA Coach.

Personal MBA Coach recommends that the details provided are specific and succinct, getting to the so-what of these experiences quickly. Then, quickly transition to a discussion on how they have shaped your professional leadership approach and vision. Remember, actions speak louder than words, so it will be important to show readers the type of leader you are by using specific examples from your career. A strong essay will tell readers why they would be lucky to have YOU as their future leader.

HBS Essay 3: Growth-Oriented Essay: Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth. (up to 250 words)
This third HBS essay is new and not one we have seen from other business schools. As HBS states, curiosity can come in many forms. There is no one approach to this essay, so you really want to think about your own uniqueness here as you select an example. You can consider intellectual curiosity, personal curiosity, or professional curiosity here. Naturally, the implications are more meaningful than the story itself. It is important that the reader can see how you have grown as a professional and as a person from this experience. While not asked, this is a great way to show HBS how you take risks and how you will come to HBS with a growth mindset.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: How to Approach the 2024-2025 Wharton EMBA Essays
The Wharton EMBA application is officially open. The first Wharton EMBA deadline is in October and the second in January.

The Wharton EMBA application includes two required essays and one optional essay. After shortening the word count last year, Wharton has increased the length of essay 1, but otherwise, left the questions unchanged. In what is seemingly an effort to simplify the process for the Wharton admissions committee, Wharton’s EMBA essays and its full-time MBA essays are the same.

If you are considering an Executive MBA, Wharton’s program is among the top EMBA programs in the world. With campuses in Philadelphia and San Francisco, the program offers working professionals the option to choose the location that best meets their needs. Check out our Wharton school page here for more details.

Below, please find the 2024-2025 application deadlines and Personal MBA Coach’s advice on how to tackle the Wharton EMBA application essays along with details about our Executive MBA Packages.

Upcoming Wharton EMBA Application Deadlines:
Round 1: October 14, 2024

Round 2: January 14, 2025

Wharton EMBA Essays 2024-2025
Wharton EMBA Essay 1: What are your career objectives and how will the Wharton MBA Program for Executives contribute to your attainment of this objective? (500 words maximum)

Personal MBA Coach’s Tips: For this first question, we recommend a straightforward response. State your goals clearly and provide some brief perspective on how you arrived at these aspirations. In most cases, candidates should include both a short-term and a long-term goal.

This question does not require you to walk through your entire resume. Instead, focus on your past just enough to establish your key skills as well as how and why you will succeed in the future.

Be specific about how Wharton will help you close your skill gaps and what opportunities you plan to take advantage of on campus. Avoid vague statements and do your research to determine what Wharton specifically will offer you. While you should not include a laundry list, think about classes you are particularly interested in or perhaps professors you are looking to study with. Be sure to show your understanding of Wharton’s culture here as well.

With only 500 words, you will feel limited here so be sure to minimize any filler language.

Wharton EMBA Essay 2: Taking into consideration your background – personal, professional, and/or academic – how do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community? (400 words maximum)

Personal MBA Coach’s Tips: This second essay question is required for both full-time and EMBA applicants. In general, our advice for EMBA applicants mirrors our advice for full-time applicants. Be sure to check out our detailed advice for how to tackle this essay question. Keep in mind that, as an EMBA applicant, you may need to be a bit more creative as you consider ways that you will contribute on campus.

Essay 3 (Optional): Please use this space to share any additional information about yourself that cannot be found elsewhere in your application and that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee. This space can also be used to address any extenuating circumstances (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, areas of weakness, etc.) that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider. (300 words maximum)

The third optional essay question should be answered only by those with extenuating circumstances. Read more on our approach to optional essays here.

Need help with your EMBA applications? Personal MBA Coach is here to guide you with our Executive MBA Admissions Consulting including essay editing, interview preparation, resume review, and more!

FROM Personal MBA Coach: 5 Reasons Your MBA Application Might Have Been Rejected
Being rejected from your dream business school hurts — you worked tirelessly on your application for months and have no idea where you went wrong. Do not despair, we are here to help you discern the reason. Improve your MBA application after rejection by exploring common pitfalls and working with our consultants to make your next round the winning one.

Why Was Your MBA Application Rejected?
There are many reasons for MBA application rejections, some of which may be more about the school than they are about you. Still, there are plenty of ways you can strengthen your application materials and display the type of candidate they want to see. Here are the five top reasons we see MBA rejections.

Problem 1 — You Lack a Compelling Story
Your reader should gain a clear view of who you are, your passions and why an MBA will help you achieve them. Your story is how you set yourself apart — if it hits the same notes as everyone else’s, it will be challenging for you to make a memorable impression. This does not mean you have to have traveled to developing countries and saved dying children. You simply have to get creative with how you present yourself.

Problem 2 — Your Application Is Inconsistent
Every part of your application should contribute to the same vision, including your essays, resumes, extracurriculars and LORs. The strengths you display should match those your recommenders highlight, and the passions and hobbies you discuss should tie into your expertise and interests. If any parts of your application stand out in contrast, this can raise a red flag about your sincerity and intentions.

Problem 3 — Your Test Scores Are Not Ideal
This one may be more obvious — even if you have the perfect application, you may not meet your dream school’s ideal without the GMAT/GRE/EA score to back it up. While there are always outliers on either end, set reasonable expectations. As you craft your second chance plan, think about whether there are classes you can take to demonstrate your strongest skills or if a tutor may help you better prepare for the GMAT/GRE. In addition, you may need to expand your horizons. The average student should apply to at least five schools, including safe options and reaches.

Problem 4 — The Numbers Were Not in Your Favor
Sometimes it is about the numbers. Diversity thrives in MBA classrooms, and at Personal MBA Coach, we strive to craft compelling narratives for overrepresented groups. Still, schools cannot fill entire classes with former MBB consultants. This “numbers game” is a significant reason why we encourage candidates to expand their school lists.

Problem 5 — You Lack Leadership Experience
Leaders thrive in the fast-paced world of business, and MBA programs know it. Those with prior leadership experience have a definitive advantage in MBA applications, but if you do not have the experience, all is not lost. You can prove yourself as a potential leader in many ways, such as taking on informal leadership roles, mentoring or even stepping up in any current positions you hold. As you plan for your next round of applications, consider how you can improve your leadership opportunities and articulate them in your essays.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Application Deadlines and Essay Tips: 2024-2025
The Wharton Moelis Advance Access Program 2024-2025 application is now open. Like many other schools, Wharton’s deferred MBA application mirrors the full-time one.

Although the overall advice is similar, at Personal MBA Coach we are conscious that college seniors simply do not have the professional examples that we recommend discussing in your Wharton full-time MBA application essays, so if you are a student about to graduate, keep reading!

2024-2025 Moelis Advance Access Program Application Deadline
2024-205 Deadline: April 23, 2025

2024-2025 Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Essays
Founded by a Wharton MBA graduate, Personal MBA Coach is intimately familiar with the Wharton MBA program and the culture at Wharton. We advise candidates to think about each question differently, ensuring answers complement each other AND show readers multiple aspects of their candidacy. Watch this testimonial from a Wharton admit to find out how Personal MBA Coach can help you with your Wharton applications.

Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Essay 1: How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA program to help you achieve your future professional goals? You might consider your past experience, short- and long-term goals, and resources available at Wharton. (500 words)
Wharton’s first essay question is what Personal MBA Coach calls a “goals” essay. Check out the most common MBA essay types here. This is your chance to tell Wharton more about your career aspirations. This includes your pre-MBA, short-term and long-term plans. While the Wharton Admissions Team does not expect you to have it all figured out (especially without substantial career experience), applicants should have a vision for their careers and be as specific as possible while outlining this for Wharton.

It is also expected that you touch upon your past on-campus leadership and internship experience to the extent that they are relevant to your future objectives. You do not, however, need to include everything you have done here! Instead, focus on the highlights and how they have prepared you to achieve your pre- and post-MBA goals.

Finally, you want to tell Wharton where they come in! What skills gaps do you hope an MBA will help you close? The more specific you can be, the better. So take the time to research all that Wharton has to offer and outline the specific classes, clubs and other resources you will take advantage of on campus. Be sure to avoid long lists here, however.

Do not include a laundry list. Instead, carefully think through how each offering will allow you to fill in your skill and/or experience gaps. Be sure to show an understanding of Wharton’s culture here. Avoid writing vague statements and copying and pasting content from other MBA application essays.

Wharton Moelis Advance Access MBA Essay 2: Taking into consideration your background – personal, professional, and/or academic – how do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community? (400 words)

A strong answer to Wharton’s second Moelis Advance Access MBA essay question will give Wharton insight into your most significant accomplishments and your most unique attributes and paint a clear picture as to how these will enrich the Wharton community.

If you are particularly proud of something on your resume, consider expanding on this here. Similarly, if you have a unique talent, strong extracurricular accomplishments and/or impressive on-campus leadership experience, the second essay is a great place to share this with Wharton admissions.

If you are struggling to think about what to write, think broadly here about what makes you stand out from your peers and where you have devoted the most effort in the past.

Questions to ask yourself might include:

 • What clubs have you joined on campus?
 • How were you involved in your local community?
 • Did you have a unique internship?
 • What are your hobbies?
 • Did you grow up in a unique environment?
Then, consider how you might share your passions, experiences, and successes at Wharton. Be specific! Tell Wharton what clubs you hope to join and what role you will play. Or think about how you might enrich the local community. Before writing this essay, take the time to learn more about Wharton and the school’s diverse offerings. This will help you to detail your potential contributions.

As with essay 1, do not simply list items! Select a few of your top ideas and be sure that they flow naturally from the uniquenesses you outlined earlier in the essay.

Optional Essay: Please use this space to share any additional information about yourself that cannot be found elsewhere in your application and that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee. This space can also be used to address any extenuating circumstances (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, areas of weakness, etc.) that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Chicago Booth Scholars Essay Analysis and Application Deadlines: 2024-2025
Chicago Booth Scholars Program has opened the 2024-2025 application.

There is only one application deadline, on April 29, 2025, and the decision is due to be released on July 1, 2025. If you think that the Chicago Booth Scholars Program is for you, keep reading for Personal MBA Coach’s application essay tips.

Personal MBA Coach’s Chicago Booth Scholars MBA Essay Analysis and Tips
Short-Answer Question: What are your professional plans for your time in deferment prior to starting your MBA? (up to 250 words)
For this short-answer question, outline your pre-MBA plans for Booth. If you already have a job lined up, great! If not, write about the role you are hoping to have after finishing your current studies. Be as specific as possible in detailing both the title and company (or target company) and be sure to add a bit of detail about what you plan to accomplish and how this experience will help you succeed with your ultimate goal.

Chicago Booth Scholars MBA Essay 1:
How will the Booth MBA help you achieve your immediate and long-term post-MBA career goals? (250-word minimum)

This first essay is a straightforward one and should include a few key things.

First, give Booth a bit of context as to where you are today. Though you likely have limited professional experience, applicants who successfully apply to the Chicago Booth Scholars Program generally have some leadership experience or an experience that has shaped their career plans.

Next, outline your specific short-term and long-term goals for Booth. Check out this blog for more details on how to think about post-MBA goals!

Finally, detail where Booth fits into the equation. Think about your experience and skill gaps and how a Booth MBA will help you to close them. Specificity is key here, so allow adequate time to research the Booth MBA program and be prepared to outline how you will use your time on campus to set you up for success.

Chicago Booth Scholars MBA Essay 2:
An MBA is as much about personal growth as it is about professional development. In addition to sharing your experience and goals in terms of career, we’d like to learn more about you outside of the office. Use this opportunity to tell us something about who you are. (250-word minimum)

This second Chicago Booth essay is a bit more open ended and gives applicants a chance to think about their own stories and what sets them apart. For more on crafting your personal story, check out this blog!

To approach this essay, evaluate what sets you apart from your peers and has prepared you to add something unique to the Chicago Booth classroom.

You could write about your background, your values or your unique upbringing here. Other potential topics to explore include on-campus leadership experiences, volunteer work, sports, or other hobbies and extracurricular activities.

While there is no stated maximum for the Chicago Booth essay questions, brevity is key. Hint: Do not write 1,000 words.

Optional Chicago Booth Essay
Is there any unclear information in your application that needs further explanation? If so, please use this section to clarify. (300 words maximum)

The Chicago Booth Scholars application also includes an optional essay question. For tips on handling this third (optional) Booth MBA essay, visit Personal MBA Coach’s blog on optional essays.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: MBA Planning Week 2: Enhancing Your Extracurricular Profile for MBA Admissions
Strengthening extracurricular profiles for MBA admissions is one of the key areas Personal MBA Coach is working on with MBA candidates. By putting in the extra effort now, you will have ample opportunities to add real value before the deadlines this spring and beyond and avoid being penalized for not having a track record of involvement and leadership.

Do not underestimate the importance of having strong examples of your extracurricular success when it comes time to write your MBA essays. This is particularly important for applicants hoping to secure a coveted MBA scholarship!

Below are three key guiding principles to keep in mind when determining the best extracurriculars for MBA application success.

Tips to Consider When Determining Extracurriculars for MBA Application Success
1) Quality extracurriculars over quantity
No one has the time to work with 10 different organizations. Having a laundry list of activities is not going to appeal to admissions committee members. Instead, focus your efforts on organizations or areas where you can have a real impact and add value. There is no “right” number of activities. This will vary from client to client and depend on the depth of your work. However, more often than not, less is more — particularly if you are just getting started now.

2) Focus on leadership opportunities
You have probably heard this time and again, but it is important enough to repeat: Business schools want leaders. This is true for all MBA programs, not just Harvard Business School. While there are countless ways that you can (and should) display leadership throughout your profile, extracurricular activities are one great opportunity to do so. Look for an organization where you can step up or explore options to expand your role at an existing organization. Take the time to do this now so that you have clear results to share come essay time.

3) Extracurriculars should fit with your profile
Successful applications share a consistent and impactful story. MBA admissions committees should instantly see who you are, what has defined you and why you have made specific choices. Choose areas that you are passionate about and that fit with your story. For example, if you want a career as an educational consultant, consider volunteering in the education industry. If your passion is tennis, give tennis lessons to underprivileged children in your neighborhood. You do not need to pick the most unique or prestigious charity. Instead, do what you love! You will thank us later when, during your interview, you are asked about something that makes your eyes sparkle. During application time, you will find many strategic ways to use your activities to fill gaps in your profile. Do not underestimate the importance of extracurriculars for your MBA application.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: MIT Sloan Early Admission Application Advice and Deadline: 2024-2025
MIT Sloan’s Early Admission application 2025 is now open.

Like most other deferred programs, MIT Sloan only has one application deadline, and in 2025 it is April 18, 2025.

MIT Sloan Early Admission Cover Letter:
Please submit a cover letter seeking a place in the Sloan MIT MBA program. Your letter should conform to a standard business correspondence, include one or more professional examples that illustrate why you meet the desired criteria above, and be addressed to the Admissions Committee (300 words or fewer, excluding address and salutation).

MIT Sloan’s early admission application mirrors its full-time application, requiring candidates to write a cover letter. The good news is that you probably have already written a cover letter to apply to an internship or full-time job. Your MIT cover letter should follow the same model; however, instead of asking for a particular role, you are asking for a spot in the MIT Sloan community.

To start this cover letter, take the time to think about your most significant accomplishments and what you will uniquely add to the Sloan community.

As with any strong cover letter, focus on a few highlights. This is not the time to repeat your resume (the admissions committee will already have that). These highlights could be a unique project you worked on during an internship, a leadership role you had on campus or in your community that you are particularly proud of, entrepreneurial pursuits, significant research you have conducted or perhaps rewarding volunteer work you have completed.

Consider MIT’s values as you select the most compelling highlights to cover in this letter. MIT is particularly interested in applicants who have exhibited innovative thinking.

Finally, be sure to include how you will leverage these experiences to add value to the MIT Sloan community.

MIT Sloan Short Answer Question
The Admissions Committee is excited to learn more about you and your background. In 250 words, please respond to the following short answer question: How has the world you come from shaped who you are today? For example, your family, culture, community, all help to shape aspects of your life experiences and perspective. Please use this opportunity to share more about your background.
MIT Sloan made this question required for deferred as well as full-time MBA applicants this year. This essay is an opportunity to share a bit about your background with the MIT Sloan admissions committee. To answer this short question, consider what makes you unique and who or what has been most influential for you. If you come from an unusual location or had a nontraditional upbringing, this is a great place to share it. However, if this does not describe you, do not worry. You might consider writing about family traditions, your heritage or even activities your family has enjoyed. There is no wrong answer to this question.

In addition, the MIT Sloan Early Admission application includes 2 video essays. These videos are also required of full-time MBA applicants. Check out this blog to find out more about the MIT Sloan videos and Personal MBA Coach’s tips for addressing them!

FROM Personal MBA Coach: HBS Application Deadlines & Essay Analysis: 2025-2026
Though HBS has no yet opened its application or confirmed its essay questions for applicants to the class of 2028, the Harvard Business School admissions team has announced deadlines for those hoping to matriculate in 2026.

2025-2026 Harvard Business School Application Deadlines
Round 1: September 3, 2025

Round 2: January 5, 2026

Below, please find details published last year on the Harvard Business School 2024-2025 MBA application.

(The content below was published in June 2024).

As expected, for the first time in recent history, HBS MBA essays changed for 2024-2025 applicants.

HBS changed its essay questions last year for2+2 program applicants (also asking for fewer shorter essays with similar intent) so these new essay questions are not a surprise to Personal MBA Coach.

Below Personal MBA Coach shares details on what has changed and how to approach these new essay questions.

It is also important to note that HBS changed itstesting requirements for 2024-2025 applicants.

While HBS has removed its classic open-ended “personal story” essay, this essay does give applicants an opportunity to reflect upon their past experiences and bring in elements that normally would go into a personal statement type essay. However, with only 250 words to use and a leadership focus, applicants will need to be very succinct as they talk about their past. You might consider your writing about your background, upbringing or extracurricular experiences here if they have shaped your leadership approach.

Personal MBA Coach recommends that the details provided are specific and that applicants get to the so-what of these experiences quickly. Then, focus on how your past (either personal or professional) has shaped your professional leadership approach and vision.

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Why Economic Uncertainty Could Be the Best Reason to Get Your MBA Now
The job market is tightening, inflation remains sticky, layoffs are mounting, and whispers of a looming recession are growing louder. Political tensions dominate the headlines, and elections around the globe are only adding to the noise. Given this, it is not a surprise that some prospective business school applicants are sitting on the sidelines, choosing to delay their MBA ambitions.

At Personal MBA Coach, we understand the hesitation. Leaving a stable paycheck and diving into a full-time program may not seem like the obvious choice right now.

However, the truth is: Now might actually be the smartest time to apply to business school.

If an MBA Makes Sense for You Right Now, Don’t Let Today’s Uncertainty Stop You
In this article, we spell out signs you might be ready for an MBA. If these apply to you (especially if you already have three or more years of full-time work experience by the time you would start your MBA), delaying your application will not necessarily strengthen your candidacy. In fact, for many applicants, waiting too long can raise questions about fit or timing—especially at schools that prefer candidates with fewer years of experience.

Rather than adding another year just for the sake of it, use your existing experience to propel yourself forward. The sooner you start, the sooner you can enjoy the salary bump offered by an MBA.

Competition Is Lower—And That Works in Your Favor
Fear is keeping many would-be applicants from hitting submit. The result? A quieter, less competitive admissions cycle, at least for round 1 of the 2025-2026 MBA application cycle. Fewer applications mean admissions teams have more flexibility—and more incentive to offer spots (and funding) to strong candidates who are ready to move.

Business schools still need to fill their classes with high-caliber talent and, as we have written before, in a competitive cycle countless strong candidates are waitlisted or rejected, simply because too many applicants with a similar profile are applying at the same time. This means, if you move forward with your MBA aspirations now, you will likely face fewer hurdles—and potentially receive more generous merit-based scholarships to help sweeten the deal.

Apply Before the Crowd Shows Up
We do not expect this trend to continue in the 2026-2027 MBA application cycle (or even into round 2 of the 2025-2026 cycle). Recessions tend to trigger a surge in MBA applications. When the job market shrinks, people look for a way to reset. This is a pattern that has continued for decades and one that we have seen repeatedly while running Personal MBA Coach for the past 17 years. But things are a bit different now: The economic signals are already here, and people are still waiting. We do not expect this window to last long.

If you delay your MBA plans, you will be competing with a much larger pool of applicants, many of whom are waiting for the market to drop further before making a move.

Keep in Mind: The Headlines Will Not Define Your MBA Experience
Yes, the political environment is volatile. But the reality is, once you are on campus, most if not all of the noise fades. Business schools operate with considerable independence and receive very little direct federal funding. In fact, the AACSB has reported that only 1% of funding for American business schools comes from government sources. This means that regardless of the political environment, business school will give you two years of focus, community, and momentum. You will build a network, refine your skillset, and graduate just as the market begins to recover.

Play Offense, Not Defense
The easy choice right now? Stay put. Wait it out. See how the economy evolves. But waiting rarely puts you ahead. If you apply this year, you will be graduating in 2027—just as companies are likely ramping up hiring, launching new strategies, and looking for fresh leadership. That’s where you come in.

At Personal MBA Coach, we help candidates make bold but calculated moves—because while the rest of the world freezes, opportunity doesn’t wait.

Bottom Line
This isn’t just about getting into business school—it’s about getting ahead of the curve. If you’re thinking about an MBA, don’t let uncertainty hold you back. Let it push you forward. Are you ready?

FROM Personal MBA Coach: Duke MBA Application Deadlines and Essay Advice: 2025-2026
Duke Fuqua Daytime MBA application 2025-2026 details are now live.

For those interested in applying to Duke Fuqua, the school offers an early action deadline, along with three regular rounds.

The Duke MBA Application Deadlines 2025-2026 Are:
Early Action: September 4, 2025

Round 1: September 30, 2025

Round 2: January 8, 2026

Round 3: February 24, 2026

Round 4: April 1, 2026

Please see below for Personal MBA Coach’s tips on how to answer the 2025-2026 Duke MBA essays.

Personal MBA Coach’s Tips for the Duke MBA Essays:
First, there is a required short answer question: What are your post-MBA career goals? Share with us your first choice career plan and your alternate plan.

This is a simple short-answer goals essay. Check out Personal MBA Coach’s blog on writing winning essays for some more advice. Also, make sure to check this quick tips video on developing your MBA career goals:

As in previous years, Duke asks applicants to answer two additional essay questions.

Duke MBA Essay 1: 25 Random Things About Yourself
The ‘Team Fuqua’ spirit and community is one of the things that sets the MBA experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. Please share with us “25 Random Things” about you. The Admissions Committee wants to get to know YOU – beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. Share with us important life experiences, your hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are.

Your list will be limited to 2 pages (750 words maximum). Please present your response in list form, numbered 1 to 25. Some points may be brief, while others may be longer.

With this first Duke MBA essay, be yourself and have fun. The majority of this essay should be personal, including hobbies, passions and interesting facts. These facts do not need to be formal. This is your chance to show how you are unique. It is also a great opportunity to weave in additional elements of your personal story and let the reader in on your personality. Include not only the what but also some of the why behind your facts.

There are no wrong answers here, but Personal MBA Coach advises that clients limit repetition and do not include a lot of professional details.

Duke MBA Essay 2: The Fuqua Community and You
Fuqua prides itself on cultivating a culture of engagement. Our students enjoy a wide range of student-led organizations that provide opportunities for leadership development and personal fulfillment, as well as an outlet for contributing to society. Our student-led government, clubs, centers, and events are an integral part of the student culture and to the development of leaders. Based on your understanding of the Fuqua culture, what are 3 ways you expect to contribute at Fuqua? (500 words maximum).

For this Duke MBA essay, pick only THREE things.

An ideal answer will show that you are a well-rounded and engaged citizen and will act this way as well once you get on campus. They want to see that you did your research and really know why you want to go to Duke and how you will improve the community.

You should include a mix of what you have done in the past AND specifically how you will be active on campus. In addition to discussing the Fuqua culture, you should specifically mention how you will be involved on campus.

Name specific clubs you might join, programs you hope to establish and/or ways you would like to become involved in the broader community. It is important to Fuqua that candidates have clearly thought through their unique roles on campus, so be sure to devote plenty of time to research!

Duke MBA Optional essay: Tell us more
If you feel there are circumstances of which the admissions committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g. unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance). Note that you should NOT upload additional essays nor additional recommendations in this area. The Optional Information section is intended to provide the admissions committee with insight into your circumstances only.

Instructions: Your response will be limited to 1 page (500 words maximum).

Duke Fuqua also has an optional essay. However, DO NOT feel compelled to answer this Duke MBA application essay. In most instances, Personal MBA Coach advises candidates only with extenuating circumstances (i.e., low GPAs or gaps in employment) to provide additional information here.
