Plant scientists have used genetic engineering on seeds to produce crop plants that are highly resistant to insect damage. Unfortunately, the seeds themselves are quite expensive, and the plants require more fertilizer and water to grow well than normal ones. Thus, for most farmers the savings on pesticides would not compensate for the higher seed costs and the cost of additional fertilizer. However, since consumer demand for grains, fruits, and vegetables grown without the use of pesticides continues to rise, the use of genetically engineered seeds of this kind is likely to become widespread.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first supplies a context for the argument; the second is the argument's main conclusion.

(B) The first introduces a development that the argument predicts will have a certain outcome; the second is a state of affairs that the argument denies will be part of that outcome.

(C) The first presents a development that the argument predicts will have a certain outcome; the second acknowledges a consideration that weighs against that prediction.

(D) The first provides evidence to support a prediction that the argument seeks to defend; the second is that prediction.

(E) The first and the second each provide evidence to support the argument's main conclusion.

Imo C
D and E can be ruled out safely
A is out because the argument gives a judgement not context.
B is also out

RonPurewal I saw your solution in MGMAT forum -> link : https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/foru ... t2270.html
In the link you said C as the answer -> Even C is what i got.... and many people in this forum got C ,
Kindly advice is C the right answer or D ?
Official answer in GMAT CLUB is somehow D... I am also confused.

This is an official (GMATPrep) problem. The answer is C.
D is clearly incorrect, as the first boldface statement is clearly presented as FACT. It's not possible to "weigh against" something FACTUAL.

If you're looking at an answer key that gives D for this problem, then that key is in error. Probably just a typo or transcription error, as this is GMAC's problem.

Please two experts confirm the OA for this question.

Please note that the question has variations. The bold parts are different and options are different in them.

Thank you. It seems that two diffirent questions with the same passage have been merged. I will try to split those two questions.

The answer is C beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt. You are correct.

EDIT: As noted by the posters above me, there are multiple variants of this problem, based on the same passage (...not the first time this sort of thing has happened, either — nor probably the last).
