Shoot for all schools in one round. Avoid spreading it out if you can. The reason is timing.

When you get accepted to a school, they usually give you a deadline to send in your deposit money to confirm that you're going there.

For schools that you apply to in R1, the deposit deadline is usually BEFORE the R2 notifications are sent out. In other words, you'll have to put money down on the schools you applied to for R1 before you'll find out whether you got accepted in R2.

Again, try and apply to 4-6 schools in one round. You'll find that 80-90% of your time and effort will be spent on your first 1-2 applications. Beyond that, it won't take much time at all to complete additional schools.
