I have a problem figuring out the way verbal algorithm works. I took GMATPrep exam today; I made 14 questions wrong - the first seven were from first 30 questions and the last seven were from last 11 questions. I ended up getting V29. Questions: 1 - 10 - 4 wrongs 11 - 20 - 1 wrongs 21 - 30 - 2 wrongs - till this point, I had only 7 wrongs. 31 - 41 - 7 wrongs
I had made 15 and 10 questions wrong in the other GMATPrep tests, and still managed to get V35 and V40, respectively. With just 14 wrong can the verbal scroe plunge to V29. i mean I don't suspect the algorithm, but I just can't believe it. The algorithm is puzzling me. Is there any particular reason behind this? Experts can you please help me evaluate my mistake?

First, let me tell you there is no joy trying to play around the algorithm. Don't spend too much time analysing it. The experimental questions appear anywhere. Check the what if scenarios which give an approximate picture. I believe the first 4wrongs cost you much

Your score is going to adapt based as you get questions right or wrong. If you got a large number wrong initially, it would be hard to "dig yourself" out and get a high score since you got 14 total wrong.
Thank you both. Timing has been my biggest problem. Everytime, I'm running short of 10-12 mins or running short for last four questions. Can you give any suggestions?

I usually spend more time on the first few questions as well since they are "more important". And I sacrifice the last few questions as a result. I suppose this is the right way to go about it?
Thanks for your suggestion. I saw that you have given the test once. How was your experience? Did you take the GMATPrep tests before giving the real test? If so, the results that you got from Prep test varied much with your final exam? Any insight would be great.

I think you should check out Rajat- e-gmat's note. "timing is not a problem but a symptom". In case you spend too much time up front , check if there is a specific pattern of questions that you take too much time on. work on building knowledge on that topic. If you have a subscription to verbal tests - try one exam - untimed - to know how much more do you need. This will also serve as an input if you would have to take a few guesses, take them on these and space them out in the middle. Hope this helps

Doing the test was one of the most mentally draining exercises i have ever done, and you really do need to build up stamina for the actual test during your practices.
Yes i did do both the GMATPrep tests and I got 700+ for both, but reality hit me in the face during the actual test. I am working hard for my next test because i know i can definitely do better!
I rmb seeing on one of the prep guides that you should allocate your time for verbal section as follows if possible: Qns 1-10: 25min Qns 11-20: 20min Qns 21-30: 20min Qns 31-41: 10min
