At one time, European and Japanese companies tried to imitate their American
rivals. Today, American appliance manufacturers import European scientists to
lead their research staffs; American automakers design cars that mimic the styling
of German, Italian, and French imports; and American electronics firms boast in
their advertising of “Japanese-style” devotion to quality and reliability. In the
world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.
Each of the following statements, if true, would help to support the claim above
EXCEPT:
(A) An American camera company claims in its promotional literature to produce
cameras “as fine as the best Swiss imports.”
(B) An American maker of stereo components designs its products to resemble
those of a popular Japanese firm.
(C) An American manufacturer of video games uses a brand name chosen
because it sounds like a Japanese word.
(D) An American maker of televisions studies German-made televisions in order
to adopt German manufacturing techniques.
(E) An American maker of frozen foods advertises its dinners as “Real European
style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs.”

That question is discussed here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/at-one-time- ... 64730.html Hope it helps.

in this are we not allowed to assume that if there are new movies released then the family will go to see the movie ?

The rule tells us what they do if there's no new movie, but says nothing about what happens if there is one. So when a new movie is released, they could be relying on some other parameter to decide. We can't determine where they went.

Answer: E.

In harsh economic times, there is a shift in business from mainstream retail stores to discount retail stores as consumers aim to reduce their total monthly spending. For local discount stores, when unemployment rises or effective wages decline due to inflation or another cause, sales go up. By contrast, however, during periods of extreme economic hardship, business at discount stores stops improving and may even suffer.

Which of the following, if true, does most to explain the contrast described above?

A. During extreme economic hardship, businesses that are located near discount stores and which also cater to lower spending levels also suffer.

B. The lower overall levels of consumer spending are, the more discount stores will benefit.

C. When discount stores flourish, they may be able to hire additional staff and raise effective wages.

D. During extreme economic hardship, consumers may continue to reduce total spending even after they have shifted their purchases to the most economic outlets available.

E. Except during periods of extreme economic hardship, discount stores tend to thrive more in economies benefitting from a direct economic stimulus, which increases spending cash.

Which of the following most logically completes the passage?

A tropical thorn forest was cleared and converted by humans into soybean fields. The loss of the original habitat poses a fatal threat to the area's population of cuis, which are wild guinea pigs. Ecologists originally estimated that the cuis in the area would vanish within four years. Two years, the population of cuis is already cut in half, but it is unlikely that they will completely vanish from the region within the next two years, since _______________.

A. the soybean farmers in the area intend to plant two crops of soybeans this year rather than the usual single crop

B. the original plans to clear additional nearby thorn forest have not been expanded in scope, as had been considered

C. the last cuis to remain alive are likely to be the most resilient

D. viscachas, a form of burrowing rodent also indigenous to thorn forests, have vanished from the area more slowly than expected

E. the local population of the maned wolf, a major predator of the cuis, has declined faster than predicted from the loss of habitat

How is the answer 18?
I'm getting 20
If a and b both become negative then it will have +3 value which will basically be 1-1-2+3-4=-3

So the minimum value will be when a is positive

No so it's like
If we consider what you are saying then we will get something like this :
1+a/(-a) +2b/(-b)+ 3(a)(b)/(-a)(-b)-4c/(+c)

From here we get 1-1-2 *+3*-4

As (-a)(-b) = +ab

I hope this explains : so if we take a as positive number we will get something like this

1+1-2-3-4=-7

This one gives a more negative number so basically the least possible number
