Hello!
I'm studying for the GMAT and I'm about a month away from test-day. I think I may have hit a plateau as far as the Verbal Section is concerned (I have a natural affinity for SC and RC, don't ask me why...)
I've completed every question on the 13th ed Official Guide, with an accuracy of about 90-92% for each of the three verbal question types (half of my mistakes were due to mis-reads and the like, and the other half were plain old errors).
I've also done the Quant ones, with an accuracy of 82-84% for PS and DS.
At this juncture, I'm not sure if I should refocus my efforts on brushing up the Quant, or if it's worthwhile to invest more time in the Verbal aspect.
I'd like to know how, in your experience, performance on the 12th/13th ed Official Guide correlates to real exam performance. Am I on the right track, or is a performance of, say, 80%ish on the Quant practice subpar if I'm aiming for 720+?

There definitely is a correlation and I, sadly, can confirm this on my own. Before my first GMAT attempt in Dec '12, I had the exact same question and contacted many "720+ debriefers". In fact, almost all had an OG12/OG13accuracy of 90%+ in all sections. Here I am talking just about the hit rate of their first completion of official questions. Personally, I had a success rate on OG questions about 80% (between 75% in PS and DS and approx. 90% in RC and CR) and ended up wth a score of 640. So I do think that you should try to work on your weak areas.
Provided you have already had an in-depth look at all mistaken/guessed questions, the very best approach for you here should be to take one official GMATPrep test. I think this will show you where exactly you stand in terms of Verbal and Quant. If you are already around V42, I would concentrate on Quant. A 82-84% hit rate on Quant could result in a Q45, which still offers a lot of improvement. You have to have in mind that a Q45 is somehow low in terms of its overall percentile rank.
But as I said - it is very important to first understand WHY you did the mistakes/guesses, find every possible way of solving the mistaken questions and of eliminating all wrong question answers!

the last 30 or so questions for each section in the OG are the ones that are actually of 650+ difficulty. Ideally, you should be getting 90% of the questions correct prior to those in your strong areas, and maybe a drop to 75% in the 650+ questions. If you want to get better in Quant, get the MGMAT Advanced Quant book. This was the only thing I've done in my GMAT prep that substantially made a difference in a relatively short amount of time. As far as verbal sections, keep looking at OG problems and maybe LSAT problems. You want to condition yourself with material that is more difficult, not necessarily reflective of the test day difficulty. That's what a GMAT Prep practice exam is for, but not necessarily what you are looking for in practice.
