I agree that you are an unconventional applicant – and this fact alone is neutral, neither good nor bad on its face. It depends on the details. It can be a plus in that it differentiates you (and adcoms want diversity of experience), it can be a negative in that you have to work a little harder to clarify why you are pursuing a business degree.
You’re clearly a qualified applicant to competitive programs, and I believe you were correct to target your stated range. If you put together compelling applicants, I believe you will have some nice admits.
Your work experience holds some possible pluses – including public service and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, top MBA programs want to see advancement, superior performance, and a stellar track record. From what you wrote it looks a bit unfocused and lacking direction; it doesn’t cohere into a clear story. So, IF in
your application you were able to show upward growth/advancement and to pull the disparate things together into a unified story/message, then I believe you have a good chance
