1. I have 8 months before I start applying and want to know the things I should focus on (or) skillsets that I could develop over this time that would really help my cause (Apart from talking to current students and learning more about schools, and their programs, etc)

Continue making a good impression at work and spend time with the people who will be writing your recos. Strong recommendations are important for high GMAT scorers, because schools may automatically assume you lack "people skills" when you have a high intellect demonstrated in your profile.

2. How important is community service for admissions? I have nothing to showcase here and I am worried that if I start now, admissions officers will see me as being fake and doing community service just before applying to B schools. Is it okay if I don’t have anything here? Will I be perceived negatively if I have zero experience here?

In short, yes---schools want to bring in people who are engaged both inside and outside the classroom. Everyone would have a high GMAT and stronger work achievements if that's all they focused on, so you will be potentially losing your seat to someone with a lower GMAT or fewer work achievements, but who is highly engaged in their community and making an impact. As for appearing as a last minute achiever in this area, you should look back to college and perhaps reinvigorate something you did back then so it will indicate a long running passion. Not all schools ask for the exact dates of involvement, but if you start doing something you have done in the past, the assumption may be that you have always been involved in that area.

3. GPA (72%) is average in engineering, but my GPA (7.9) in masters in management is in the good to very good category. How will the adcoms know that I have performed well in my masters, because the direct conversion to a 4-point scale might not give an attractive GPA? How much weight will my engineering score carry for my profile, considering that is not the last college I attended?

B-schools look more at undergrad achievements vs. grad school achievements and are well versed in international transcripts. maving successfully completed a difficult degree like engineering and also having come through not only a grad program, but also the CFA challenge, you will be viewed positively.

4. How will adcoms perceive my masters in management? I did the course realizing that it wasn’t a pure MBA course, but something that will help me switch careers from engineering into Finance

Masters degrees indicate academic aptitude, so it should be viewed as a positive.

5. And obviously, the open ended question on profile evaluation: How strong is my profile/candidature for fall 2017 admissions?

i would say despite your very competitive application pool, you should have strong interest from top 10 schools based on your GMAT score and your international experience which is both relevant and valuable in the b-school classroom. Let us know if we can help ensure you are casting a compelling vision that will resonate well with the top schools. Heaven knows your competition will be doing so!

bryantmichaels - Thank you very much for taking the time out and helping me with my questions. Really appreciate your valuable feed back.

As you say, I have a lot of introspection to do and hopefully, will be able to find a meaningful social work that resonates with me, and something which I can talk about passionately if someone asks :)

And as always, eager to hear more thoughts/feedbacks and suggestions :-D

Hey dude!
Good to hear from you! :)

So first of all, congrats on that WICKED GMAT!!!!!! Nicely done! That will be a profile booster for you.

Other than that (I would need more detail here) your work experience seems to be your biggest strength. Which is good, because its' probably the most important thing. ;)

You are right that your non IIT + so-so GPA is the big obstacle. Now, what is your mission? To PROVE that you are better than all those other IIT guys with a similar GMAT. Can you do that? :) Then Top 10 is within range!

On to your Questions:

1. I have 8 months before I start applying and want to know the things I should focus on (or) skillsets that I could develop over this time that would really help my cause (Apart from talking to current students and learning more about schools, and their programs, etc)

- Take ANY and EVERY leadership opportunity given to you
- Do awesomely well at work
- Make sure you are keeping up volunteer work and activities
- Start talking to people and researching schools NOW!!!

2. How important is community service for admissions? I have nothing to showcase here and I am worried that if I start now, admissions officers will see me as being fake and doing community service just before applying to B schools. Is it okay if I don’t have anything here? Will I be perceived negatively if I have zero experience here?

- If you have NOTHING at all, its a weakness. But then again you very well might have something? something small? something we can use? If not, get started on that NOW! Like - yesterday!

- Your Masters GPA is anyhow not that important.

4. How will adcoms perceive my masters in management? I did the course realizing that it wasn’t a pure MBA course, but something that will help me switch careers from engineering into Finance

- They will view it as a Masters in Management :) What I mean though it is good that you have some business training, and you will need to explain in your application why it is VITAL that you get more.

5. And obviously, the open ended question on profile evaluation: How strong is my profile/candidature for fall 2017 admissions?
- Well, more information from you might help, but let's say that if you expand your list Top 20, and apply to a lot of schools (7+) rather than few, your chances will be greater (of course!)

Best of luck,
