This might be a slightly different perspective sv05. Here goes:
  1. It is not clear as to the nature of your work - development/test/support? That, more than the designation, will really determine the quality of your experience. That is also important to check your post-MBA goals feasibility (which btw you have not mentioned here). If you could share the name of the firm, depending on its brand visibility, the chances can vary too
  2. The GMAT score will parry the less than stellar undergrad performance. Though it is also important to understand if that percentage was stellar on a relative basis? The gender factor will help but in general, you will have a lot of competition with folks in a similar GMAT bracket. So apart from aiming high, I would seriously advice to be pragmatic too - meaning, pick up the right school mix to hedge your risks.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Hi,

I am into development and i am looking to getting into consulting.
The undergrad performance is slightly above average(highest would be around 85%).
Could you suggest me some colleges which are good for consulting that i have a fair chance in?

Hi sv05,

First of all congrats for such a good GMAT Score. Your academics and GMAT Score are really good. But, your work experience is on average side. In U.S. I would suggest you to target B-Schools like Chicago Booth, NYU Stern, Kellogg, Darden, CMU Tepper and Michigan Ross. And in Canada you can target B-Schools like Ivey, Queens and Rotman.

You may also gauge your chances of getting admission to top business school by trying this amazing tool

You can also get your free profile evaluation done by the top Ivy league B-School grads during the webinar conducted by General Education on 31st May 2015. For registration and more details visit our website

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Hi there!

First off, congrats on a great GMAT score! Nicely done! Overall, your academic profile is quite strong and could put you in the conversation at a lot of top schools. However, as you pointed out, your weakness at the moment is your involvement. All of the top 10 schools not only look for involvement, but look for prospective students to lead projects or initiatives outside of their professional life. If this is indeed a gap, many of these schools will likely become stretch schools for you. Also, your work experience as a Software Engineer won't jump out at the AdCom, so we'll need to identify unique aspects of your job that make you a standout candidate. What has your professional growth been like? What are you responsible for? How much of a leader are you at your firm? And finally, to further identify a core list of schools, it would be helpful to better understand what your post-MBA goals are. What do you want to do short term? Where do you see yourself 5-8 years after your MBA?

Hi,

Thank you so much for your feedback.I honestly have not led an initiative outside professional life.In my professional life,i have worked on 3 projects and have gotten rewarded for good performance in two of them.I have worked as a developer of customer communication module for banking clients but i cannot say that my growth has been extra ordinary or that i am a leader at the firm.I have also worked on a non-professional project for the firm for the better working of the firm.Apart from that i have written two technical articles for which i have been rewarded by the firm.I am looking for getting into IT consulting. What colleges do you think i have a fair chance in?

For reasons mentioned here, I will refrain from providing gut-based school suggestions more so because you really need to pick your target schools really carefully.

There are career paths which may be a more nature fit with your kind of experience compared to Consulting - so make sure you've thought this through well enough sv05.

All the best

Hi sv05,

For consulting Chicago Booth, Northwestern University(Kellogg), Michigan Ross, Virginia Darden, Queens and Ivey School of Business are really good. And if you are also looking for scholarship in that case B-Schools like - Michigan Ross, Virginia Darden and Chicago Booth provides good scholarship as well. For getting an admission and scholarship from these B-Schools your essays needs to be written very well. I would strongly suggest you to take some professional consultants help for drafting your essays.

Hi,

Please advise on the colleges i should/can apply to in USA and Canada

Indian female engineer
GMAT Score-740 Q-50 V-39 IR-4(1st attempt)
B'Tech-69.89%[from an average college in Haryana,India]
Class 12th-91.2%
Class 10th-94.6%

Work Experience:Two years and nine months of experience in a mid sized organization(2000 employees) in New Delhi,India as Software Engineer for two years and Senior Software Engineer since the past nine months.I have mostly worked in the banking domain for two clients in the Middle East[Abu Dhabi,Muscat] and one client in the manufacturing domain in Europe[Greece].No onsite experience. Not much in the name of extra-curricular activities.

Hi sv05,

It would complete the picture if you talked a little more about your work related achievements.

You have a great GMAT score coupled with an average undergrad. Moreover, good achievements at work will help you make an impression through the application. Think about being able to differentiate yourself in an oversubscribed Indian IT engineer pool.

Extra curricular involvement (which is meaningful) can be one way to add that zing to the application.
