I am planning to apply for R2. I have recently got a decent score. As I have started to explore the schools and consultants, I am a bit overwhelmed. Please provide your valuable opinions.

Profile -

GMAT Score - 655 (Q84 V83 DI81)

Work Experience - 8 years (Majorly in E-commerce business role)
Nationality - Indian (Woman)
Current Residency - UAE
Age - 32

International Experience - Currently working as Category Manager in Dubai with Under Armour and handling the entire ME region for past 2.5 years
Other Work Experience - Previously working with Flipkart as Planning manager for 3 years

Education - 1. M. Tech from IIT, Bombay (9.43 GPA);
2. B. Tech from WBUT (9.2 GPA, bronze medalist in university)

Post MBA Goal - Want to continue in E-commerce domain, preferably in Product management or Category management

Few Target Schools - UCLA, Tepper, Marshall, McCombs, Oxford, Insead (Singapore)

Queries -
  1. As I am on the higher spectrum of the age for US MBA colleges, is it possible to get into 1?
  2. Need opinion on my choice of schools. I am open for any other school suggestions based on my profile. I am not looking for any EU programs.
  3. Suggestions for MBA consultants. I need a lot of hand holding, hence, looking for someone who has good reputation, very responsive, easy to communicate
SohiniSengupta, Your profile has a lot going for it! With a strong academic background and solid e-commerce experience, you're well-positioned for an MBA. Your GMAT score is decent, but your unique perspective as a woman in a leadership role can really make your application shine.

When you’re crafting your application, think about your goals and how an MBA will help you achieve them. Share specific stories that highlight your leadership and the impact you’ve made. INSEAD values diversity and international perspectives, so be sure to reflect that in your narrative.

We have helped an applicant with 8 years of work experience to gain admission to INSEAD. Overall, you have a good profile and a shot at these schools. Your age is slightly above average, however, if you are able to craft an outstanding application, you can make up for it. What’s going to matter most in your profile is how you connect the dots and present a compelling application.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile and chances further.

Hi Sohini,

Overall, good profile. I wish you had a higher GMAT score, which would make you golden, and possibly open the choice for more higher ranked MBA programs. Regarding your questions:

1. yes, you are on the higher side of the age spectrum wrt the US MBA programs. That said, some career opportunities such as consulting and IB are more sensitive to where you are in your career journey in terms of role and yrs. of work exp. - this is because they have a more structured hiring process. If you wish to remain in the tech industry, you should not face these challenges. You should convince the admissions teams that now is the right time for you to do an MBA given where you are in your career at this point in time.
2. You said no to EU programs, but may I still suggest IESE, which has a good focus on tech. Among other choices- you could look into Foster (safety), Tepper (one of my applicants graduated several years ago with 8 yrs PRE MBA exp.), Emory, McDonough and Ross. However' you've pretty much got it right with the first four names.
3. I'd be happy to have a chat with you and explain our process. We do a lot of hand holding in helping you tell your story, but we do not do any ghost writing, as that's not something be ascribe too. If you are willing to work hard with our full support, definitely reach out!

Hi Sohini!

You have a solid profile! Let me answer your primary queries, but happy to chat more.

1. Absolutely! While the average is about 5 years of experience, you are definitely not on the higher end. In fact, having more work experience before going to MBA will really help you well with landing a internship/post-MBA offer. We can even use optional essays to highlight your IIT and GMAT scores.
2. Foster, UCLA, USC Marshall on West coast would be good bets to transition into product management due to geographical proximity to tech companies. Other schools I'd consider are UNC, McCombs, Emory, Kelley. You can even get strategic and go after some of the Top 10 schools with high admit rates and good product management placement history. Insead and Cambridge are good options outside of US, but if I were you I would choose US given your post MBA goals around product management.
3. I am an alumni from UNC Kenan Flagler, currently working as a Global Product Manager at Amazon. I have helped candidates last year to get into McCombs, Kelley, Foster, UCLA, UCI, Cornell, and many more. A bunch of them got pretty good scholarships as well.

Given our backgrounds, I genuinely believe that I'd be able to help you land some good schools. I sent a PM with additional details to see if you'd be interested to get on a call. I am happy to connect you to a couple of other candidates that I am helping at the moment to see if our working style works for you.

Best,
Chandana

Hi! What is your main motivation for why MBA if you are already a category manager? Where do you plan to work post MBA? Because honestly the US doesn’t usually hire international students for marketing roles, it’s not seen as necessary.

If you plan to head back to the ME that might work though. This impacts the choice of schools, marketing vs not like I might add NYU as a stretch school but if you pick consulting as a way to pay loans off and get WE in the US, different input.

Would be helpful to know 1) how you have moved the needle at work 2) leadership profile (track record of solving problems in the workplace and outside) 3) community and hobbies - well roundedness as all these things are extremely important making both the analytical and emotional appeal to the adcom.

Cheers, Farrell
