Hello and many thanks in advance for any advice!
GMAT: haven't taken yet, but practice test scores consistently place me in 700-720 range. High verbal, middling quant.
Goal: to get into the social impact sector (re: tech-based social enterprises, microfinance, etc.), either via marketing or biz development.
Schools considered: Duke, Haas, Kellogg, UCLA, UT Austin, Washington (prefer West Coast)
Pool: Asian American 27-year-old male.
Academic background: Graduated cum laude and with honors in English Literature and American Studies from a Midwestern state school. Did a thesis, was a Dean's Scholar, served on a departmental advisory board.
GPA: 3.9/4.0
- Rebuilt an tutoring program for local high schools, helping underserved students get SAT and ACT prep help.
- Worked my way through school as research assistant, admin, internships
Work Experience: 5 years
Background: Took a year off in college to work for an AmeriCorps program in NYC; worked in an inner-city school providing tutoring.
Post-graduation, worked at an arts-based nonprofit doing development and marketing for a year, then worked at the corporate foundation of a global investment bank (top 5) for two years overseeing a $20M grant fund, organizing employee volunteer program, and managing communications for the foundation.
Currently a year into a globally renowned arts institution in NYC, where I handle trustee and curatorial affairs for the business side. Both the current and previous job have very high name recognition.
Volunteer Work: Serve on alumni board of Americorps program; volunteer at a writing program for kids
Concerns:1. I've bounced a little bit around in my work experience, but have definitively been in the non-profit side. Can I translate this into an acceptance with my interests? Or will they question why I don't want to be in the arts?
2. Little professional managerial experience, and even though my current job is incredibly dynamic and challenging, the title sounds a little "meh."
3. Am I aiming too high? I'm not feeling super confident, but kind of want an all-or-nothing shot. Any suggestions on schools that might fit my profile?
Again, thanks so much for any feedback and guidance!
