Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply for INSEAD MBA for the August 2026 or January 2027 intake and would appreciate an honest evaluation of my profile.

Academics:
  • 10th (CBSE): 10/10 CGPA, India
  • 12th (CBSE): 95%, India
  • B.Tech (Computer Science): 7.27 CGPA, India
  • Masters (Computer Science): 3.8/4.0 CGPA, United States
GMAT:
  • GMAT Classic (Jan, 2024): 740 (Do I need to take GMAT FE?)
Work Experience:
  • 3+ years as a Software Development Engineer (SDE) in the US (Amazon + Current role)
  • Experience in backend engineering, distributed systems, APIs, and product development
  • Currently working at NIH (CSR) via Leidos.
  • I have one Internship experience in the US and 2 Internships in India as well.
Achievements and Recognition:
  • Director’s Award at NIH (considered prestigious)
  • 9th position in National Geomap Quiz (2014)
  • State-level Gold Medal in Inline Skating (2012–2013)
  • TEDx organizer during B.Tech
  • Head of PR for annual techno-cultural college fest
  • Member of the college cricket team
Post-MBA Plans:
  • Short-term (0-3 years post MBA): Transition into Product Management or Tech Strategy roles, ideally in global markets or back in India.
  • Target roles include Product Manager or Technical Product Lead (especially in AI, developer platforms, or health-tech ecosystems).
  • Long-term (3-8+ years post MBA): Hopefully move into Tech Leadership (CPO/CTO path), leveraging my engineering background and international exposure.
Key Questions:
  1. How competitive is this profile for INSEAD?
  2. Does my Masters GPA + work experience compensate for the lower B.Tech CGPA?
  3. Do I have a strong enough spike or differentiator?
  4. Which intake might suit my profile better – August or January?
  5. Any suggestions on how to position my background effectively in essays and interviews?
Thanks in advance for your time and insights. Looking forward to your feedback.
Hi bhnirush, your profile looks good.

How INSEAD might read you: Good academics 10th/12th, B.Tech CS: 7.27 CGPA (slightly below INSEAD average, but context matters), MS CS (US): 3.8/4.0, powerful academic redemption. Your 740 GMAT Classic score shall be good. 3+ years in the US at Amazon and NIH (via Leidos), good backend/distributed systems/product exposure, leadership & extras: TEDx organizer, Head of PR, national/state-level achievements. Career clarity: Tech to Product/Tech Strategy to Tech Leadership.

Does your MS GPA + work experience offset the lower B.Tech CGPA? Yes, very convincingly. B.Tech CGPA (7.27): early academic inconsistency. Then, MS CS (3.8/4.0) in the US: clear proof of academic capability. You’ve essentially shown, “When placed in a rigorous, competitive environment, I perform at the highest level.” You should briefly address this in the optional essay (2–3 lines max), but it is not a dealbreaker.

Do you have a strong spike or differentiator? Yes, but it needs to be framed clearly.
Your spike is not just “software engineering.” It’s the intersection of: Deep technical credibility (distributed systems, backend, APIs), exposure to public-impact tech (NIH / health ecosystem), early leadership & communication (TEDx, PR head), and clear pivot into Product/Tech Strategy.

This can be attractive to INSEAD because they value: Engineers who move into influence and tech leaders who can operate across cultures and markets.

The Jan 2027 intake suits you better. You’ll apply with closer to 4+ years of experience, a good fit for tech/product candidates, and can be good for consulting/product recruiting.

Core narrative that you can use: “I started as a builder of systems. Over time, I realized that the biggest leverage comes from shaping what gets built and why. INSEAD is the bridge between execution and leadership.”

Things you can use in your story and interviews: Technical excellence > broader impact
1) Why product/tech strategy (not just PM buzzwords)
2) Why INSEAD specifically
3) Diversity
4) Global tech leadership exposure
5) Decision-making under ambiguity
6) Leadership without authority
7) Cross-cultural adaptability
8) Clear post-MBA role clarity (Product vs Tech Strategy)

Even if INSEAD is your top choice, a smart portfolio helps, so you can also explore other schools like LBS or Haas.

Questions to reflect upon:
1) Are you more excited about Product Management or Tech Strategy/Platform roles?
2) Do you want to stay in big tech, move to health-tech, or build toward entrepreneurship?
3) Any experience mentoring juniors or influencing roadmap decisions?
4) Are you open to Europe/Asia post-MBA or primarily India/US?

Happy to discuss your profile in detail.

bhnirush - interesting profile, overall.

The undergrad GPA looks a bit low (which university was it from, and was it low during certain semesters?), but the Masters GPA and GMAT can help compensate for it.

Professionally, the Amazon and NIH brands are good, but some more details can help assess your profile better e.g. were there any promotions/ progressions, key projects you've worked on, etc. Some more details on extracurriculars and intercultural activities can also help evaluate your profile for INSEAD, as the school values these angles.

Applying for INSEAD's Jan intake would be prudent at this point, considering you'll be in the earlier rounds there. Key differences between the two intakes are detailed here, and details of the Jan 2027 intake (including deadlines, essay guidelines etc.) are here.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a discussion.

Arvind
