Hello there!,
I am Shravan from India. I currently work at Tata Motors Limited.I graduated in Mechanical Engg from NITK-Surathkal (one of the top NITs in India).
My GMAT score is 770 (Q51, V42) and my GPA is 7.8/10.I will have 3 years of work experience by Matriculation (2016).
I have acquired experience in both Sales and Service in the Automotive Industry. Here's a brief rundown of my career so far:
Customer Support Manager, for the Tata Motors' fleet management operations for the Delhi Transport Corporation (~1.5 years)
OK, this role was very unconventional and is slightly difficult to explain.I was part of a 3 member team from the OEM in charge of overseeing operations at a bus depot or bus garage ( This particular one was the largest such bus depot in the world according to Wikipedia). During my shifts, I was in charge of guiding the service provider workforce of nearly 30 people consisting of Mechanics ,Electricians and Works Managers . Within a year, we achieved a turnaround in the performance of our bus garage with on-road bus breakdowns reducing by nearly 70%.
After spending more than a year in this role, I decided to move on to sales to gain more business exposure.
Territory Sales Manager for Pre-Owned vehicles division (Feb 2015- Present)
This one too is slightly unconventional IMO. I am currently in charge of the Pre-Owned Vehicles division for an entire state with two people directly reporting to me and overseeing a Sales Team of nearly 20 people spread across dealerships. In a short span of team I have achieved a volume growth of nearly 30% YOY and have expanded the dealer network. Also, according to my HR, I am the youngest TSM ever for this role.
Extracurriculars
1 Placement coordinator in my college ( made sure nearly 90% of my batch got recruited in a difficult placement year)
2. Community Fund Raising for an NGO
Please let me know if I have a shot at any of the top 15 schools. My dream school is Tuck and my backup options are Ross,Darden and Yale.
Post MBA I want to practice consulting focusing on the Automotive Industry.Long term, I would like to return to the Industry in a strategy / Leadership role.
Hey,
Unfortunately you're from a very competitive pool but not being in IT and having a 770 is fantastic! I think the auto experience is quite different and will stand out in a good way, and having managed a mid sized team is great experience as well. Schools will like the 'helping ppl get jobs' extracurricular and the fund raising for the NGO is a nice 'warm fuzzy' to have on the side.
I think the only weak points for you are:
- Indian, therefore in a competitive pool
- 3 yrs work ex (is this by matriculation? or current?) 4-6 seems to be the sweet spot.
If you have good essays and interview well, Ross should be quite interested in you and would likely be the best of the bunch for auto centric jobs. I'd imagine Darden would at least give you an interview as well. Tuck and Yale are a bit harder to crack but shouldn't be out of reach, Tuck definitely wants to feel like you're interested in them so visiting is a big help I feel (if possible). It sounds like you're looking for 'campus town' schools in top 15 so we've looked at similar schools - happy to answer questions if you have any specific ones about the schools.
