Hello GMAT Club,
I am currently Infantry Officer in the US Army and would greatly appreciate an experienced set of eyes for a profile evaluation (planning on applying fall 18)
Work Experience/Duty positions include:
-3 Platoon Leader positions spanning over 3 years (Led groups of 10 to 40 people)
-Battalion Operations staff (Long range event planning)
-(Upcoming position) Company Commander (will command a basic training company consisting of 100-150 people)
Consistently ranked #1 out of my peers in nearly all evaluations + excellent work performance reviews.
Other Education: Graduate of US Army Ranger School
Race/Nationality: Asian (First-generation american)
Age: 29 M
GMAT Score: 710 (46Q, 41V, 6 IR) 1st attempt, planning on 2nd attempt this summer with a focus on quant study
Undergrad GPA: 3.34 in Economics at a state school (upward trend in GPA - long story short, I failed out of 2 of my first 4 semesters, took a year-long leave of absence from school, returned, began the process of Army ROTC/enlisted in the national guard, then maintained Dean's list honors for the remaining 6 semesters bringing a 2.00odd GPA up to 3.34)
Goal of MBA: I admittedly need to do more research into refining clear career goals/narrow industry fields, but in general terms, pivot from the military and maximize use of managerial experience to consulting or operations management
Target Schools: UCLA Anderson, USC Marshall, UW Foster
Reach Schools: (Would like some recommendations on programs that might be worthwhile to throw a hail mary to!)

Lots to like here and schools really like military applicants. I'm glad you're already working on the GMAT again because I'd love to see 730+ to make this an easier process for you. Get the extended score report from your first attempt and see where your weak areas are and work on them.
Are you a Captain by chance? I know commanders can be captains or 1st Lts. I ask because top schools like Captains. Not to say they don't like lower ranks but competition is fierce so it can be the captains that get the attention.
PLEASE reach out to the military/veteran clubs at the programs you are targeting. They will usually have special events for you and some may even waive your application fees.
I worry a little bit about the college issues and gap...could cause some red flags. Please write that optional essay -- own what happened and explain who you are today. This is where schools like Marshall and Foster will be good targets for you.
Check out Stern -- they have an AWESOME new-ish military scholarship program!!! The 710/3.3 combo might be tough but I don't know...military might help with that.
Might also be worth looking at Johnson too with your current stats. If the GMAT goes up significantly and you think your LoRs will be stellar, check out Fuqua, Darden, maybe Ross?

Since your post-MBA goal is still “under construction” it is hard for me to judge fit with the schools you mentioned, and that can be an important factor in some (most?) cases, but besides that your profile looks like something these schools would appreciate, especially if you can get that GMAT score a bit higher.
I agree with Krista that reaching out to some military clubs at the schools you are interested in (even those dream schools!) would probably be a really good idea for you, so while you are working on that higher GMAT score, please see if you can make that happen as well, as that could really help you choose the best suited schools for you, and therefore help with the "school fit" part of your application too.
