StoneOneFour I feel very optimistic about you being able to get into those schools. I worked with somebody who had almost the exact same profile as you, he got into Columbia. He had a 740 GMAT but but I don't think his grades were quite as high as yours, he was from oil and gas, white male from Houston who didn't have a ton of extracurriculars going on. I think he actually went to Texas A&M for his undergrad as well. Do you have any interesting hobbies or something unique that might interest the admissions committee?

Your statistics are great, however admissions committee members don't pound the table to champion statistics. You need to bring yourself to life on paper and get them excited about you.

Would really recommend that you work with an admissions consultant, I recommend that for everyone to maximize this MBA investment that they are making in their future, but for you in particular.

Thanks for the reply. I know a kid that may fit that profile you described (we may be thinking of different people) but I think he had an additional year of work experience and worked for a much larger company (maybe more prestigious?)

How much do you think that would've potentially helped his odds?

Hi,

You should be good for the schools that you mention - Duke is another school that comes into mind.

Best wishes,
Karthik

Looking to potentially apply in a few months for 2017 start. I've posted this profile on another site but am interested in different views on where I may fit.

Work experience: 2 years field engineering for a small private oil and gas exploration and production company in the permian. 1 promotion from field engineer to operations engineer now based out of corporate office (3 months in). Would have a total of around 2.5 years of experience at application and 3 at matriculation. I ultimately think that there will be no advancement opportunities for quite some time based on the current state of the oil and gas industry and some other factors at my company.
Undergrad school/major: Texas A&M/Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.87
GMAT Score: 730 Q48 V42 IR6 AWA 5
Extra curriculars: No recent volunteering/extracurriculars (moved cities a few months ago and previously I lived in the middle of nowhere)
White Male

I would like to potentially do energy related investment banking in Houston focused on M&A or corporate finance/strategic planning for a large O&G company
Target schools: University of Texas, Rice, North Carolina, and Michigan (no particular order). Ideally I would be able to get into a top 15 school.
Thanks for reaching out- can say from my experience that North Carolina could be a great place for you. Also would add looking at Columbia, Stern and Cornell. I think you have lots to offer- good to mention limitations on extracurriculars from living in remote areas- but look to get involved with your own company's efforts whether in recruitng, fundraising for good causes- something that you can do within company to help strengthen that one weak link. Best wishes to you.
