Hey MBA&B, Can you please evaluate my profile?

Background: Indian female
Undergrad: Major in business/commerce
GPA: 9.0/10
GMAT: 730
Target schools: Booth, Kellogg, Columbia

Experience:
- One year at a startup as Marketing Intern
- Received full-time offers from McKinsey, Bain, Oliver Wyman, PE firms. Ultimately accepted McKinsey's offer and will join in March 2022.

Achievements: Capitan of High School Volleyball team (some years ago)
- play chess and outdoor sports in my free time
- On track to graduate with top GPA in graduating class
- Received 2 awards as an intern because of working beyond my responsibilities
- Awarded high honor roll when studying in school (top 5 % of the student body)

Post-MBA goals
- Short term: strategy consulting
- Long term: venture into VC Industry by gaining experience in consulting.

Hi,

Wondering if you are aiming for a full-time MBA or for a masters in management - you'd be eligible for both, just the timing of the application would vary vastly. Also, are you planning to apply for deferred admission? Deadlines for most of these intakes are between April 10 and April 28th- so this can also be in your consideration.
Have a look here for the deferred MBA deadlines: https://gmatclub.com/forum/deferred-mba-admissions-application-deadlines-essay-questions-379662.html

Regarding your profile, you seem to be starting from a good place right now. The McKinsey name will be a great plus on the resume. Moreover, it would enable great work-related opportunities and a steep learning curve. That you were able to crack so many offers at the topmost firms shows that there is definitely outstanding about you and that should start to reflect in your work experience as you build it over the years.

A 730 GMAT would be average at some of the top MBA programs, and I would encourage you to retake before you actually apply. You haven't highlighted your ECAs in the description. if you don't have many, i would suggest you build on those over the coming years. It's a little too early to comment on the goals.

On the whole, assuming an upward career trajectory going by your past record, I'd be bullish on your chances of getting into top MBA programs.

Hello hazelmorgan,

Hope this finds you well.

The addition of McKinsey to your CV is bound to add a lot of value and your career goals also appear to be in sync.

The one thing we would recommend is a GMAT retake especially considering you have time at hand. Most Indians applying to the top 10 US business schools apply with scores in excess of 750. That puts your score of 730 under the average of the Indian applicant pool.

Needless to say, a lot will depend on how well you connect the dots in your story and bring out your achievements. Please feel free to reach out to us in case you need help.

All the best!

I have not taken GMAT yet. I shall appreciate a quick prima-facie feedback on my profile.

I am 36 years old and have around 11 years of work ex in bank. I am working with SBI as Chief Manager and heading NRI Branch with business of USD 550 million. I have worked in Corporate banking, Trade finance, Retail banking and my last stint was in New York for 4 years in Sanciton/ Anti money laundering compliance domain. So I have varied level of exposure in bank. I am due for my promotion to Assistant General Manager next year.

I have done PGDM early in my career just after passing from college without any work experience. I neither had maturity or understanding of the basic business world, so as to capitalize on the PDGM program. Secondly it was from a regional school and not a good value addition.

Coming at this juncture where I have worked in multiple domain of the largest bank of India, I found I need an international MBA to put me in next orbit to lead a larger diversified team and need to learn more about strategy. My 4 years stint in New York has made me feel that even more intensely.

Studies and professional certification:

10 and 12th - 80%

1. BSc (Agriculture) - Grade 8.64 out of 10
2. PGDM (Finance)
3. ICWA (inter)
4. FRM (part -1) by GARP, USA
5. Advanced Wealth Management program from IIBF mumbai
6. Diploma in treasury, investment and Risk Management from IIBF
7. Associate from Insurance institute of India
8. ACAMS certified (USA) - Gold certificate in Comliancw
9. CFCS (USA) - related to Crime financing and money laundering
10. GTC (Global Trade certification) by international chamber of commerce

Extracurricular:

1. I am a vivid equity investor in equity market and I love it from my heart.

2. I have taught more than 400 underprivileged students without any fees and got them employed in different govt jobs in India and this has changed their family status.

3. Had been a contributor in multiple NGO and spend my spare time with disabled kids.

3. I have been organizer and class representative all through out my school and college. Organized annual sports, tournaments and cultural programs.

4. By virtues of my post as Branch head in a rural branch in West Bengal I have worked closely in developing self employment of rural women in local 10 villages by forming Self help group. I have financed more than 300 groups in Self Help Group model and through this more than 5000 rural women got self employed and earning their livelihood.

Which school will be suitable for me?
Is the profile worthy of getting some scholarship if coupled with 700+ GMAT score?

Regards
Rakesh

rakeshglobsyn, some high level thoughts on your profile and plans.

Your profile looks quite interesting despite the PSU background which can be limiting at times. The diverse roles and specially the NY stint can help you stand out as well as ease a relatively difficult transition.

The ECs and volunteer efforts are also something that can be used well.

The big challenge of course will be your age since MBA after 30 is tricky, making you are pretty big outlier at most regular full time programs.

The most ideal fit for you would be the Sloan Fellows programs.

Explore these and decide accordingly.

Cheers,

Hello rakeshglobsyn,

Hope this finds you well.

While your experience involves a number of talking points that will add immense value to your overall profile, your age and prior management education pose a bit of a concern (more so, the former).

You could look at applying to some of the US 1-year programs. However, prior to applying, please do check your eligibility with regard to the prior management degree as some schools such as Tuck, Haas, and Mendoza do not encourage candidates who already have a management degree.

We hope this helps.

Good luck!
