Hi,
Looking for some input for my profile and GMAT scores:

Indian, Male, 29, Petroleum Engineer (in 2017 from a Tier 2 Indian University) - 81%
GMAT FE - 695

4 years (2017-2021) work exp. in L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering with on-site experience at Oman and Saudi Arabia (offshore) as part of the offshore project management team for a Saudi Aramco project. (led a 25-30 people team in the final two months of the project while offshore)(about a year each in Oman and Saudi)

Quit L&T in 2021 and joined my family business where I have been working since (business development/finances/accounting). Our business includes retail and wholesale of agricultural products (fertilizers/pesticides) that we sell to mostly farmers and other retailers.

Miscellaneous information:
- boarding school kid since the 3rd grade. Participated in debates/elocutions etc. through school. (curious to know if school accolades count for applications)
- 1.2 Lakh rupees scholarship in Uni.
- Football tournament runner up in Uni.
- Have won a few public speaking/paper presentation/quizzes in Uni.
- IT Committee Head for a Uni Student Chapter.
- Volunteer work with a local organisation where we set up monthly food stalls open to all.

Target schools: (For Round 2)
- ISB
- LBS/INSEAD
- M7/T10

Looking for harsh constructive criticism for the profile and if I should give the GMAT again (This was my second attempt) and also for if any consultant fits for my profile. Thank you for your time!

Edit - Post MBA target industry - Finance (IB/PE)

Hi babyulikeit,

Your profile presents a strong foundation with relevant work experience, academic achievements, and extracurricular involvement. Your experience in the energy sector, particularly with L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering, is impressive. However, to maximize your chances of admission to top-tier programs like ISB, LBS, INSEAD, and the M7/T10, there are areas where you can further strengthen your application.

While a 695 is a good score, it might be worth considering a retake if you believe you can significantly improve your score. A higher GMAT score can enhance your competitiveness for top-tier programs. While you submit your applications, you can clearly articulate your long-term career goals and how an MBA from a top-tier program will help you achieve them. This will demonstrate your alignment with the program's mission and values. Additionally, you can emphasize the unique aspects of your experience, such as your on-site experience in the energy sector and involvement in your family business.

To learn more about our MBA admissions consulting services and how we can help you maximize your chances of admission to top-tier programs, would you like to schedule a free consultation with one of our MBA experts to delve deeper into your profile and develop a tailored application strategy? We can help you identify the best-fit programs and optimize your chances of admission. Our contact number is +91 7780769732.

Your profile looks great for top -20 schools globally. Though retaking the GMAT is suggested to increase the chances, you can still apply with a 98% percentile, though it would be competitive but not impossible to get admitted to your target program.
Your college activities and EC's involvement show your readiness to contribute to the program you get into. Your career profile sets a great example of leadership and team-handling skills (a major factor for LBS, INSEAD, and M7).

However, we suggest you apply for 5-6 programs and at least 1 from the M7 list and reconsider the list of schools to apply along with ISB, LBS/INSEAD. Like Booth(32%), and Columbia(36%) Oxford (33%) has higher placements in the Finance industry to suit your Post MBA goals.

DM us or schedule a call to evaluate your chances for R2 deadlines.

Hey, babyulikeit

Thank you for sharing your profile. Let’s start! Your academic background (81% from a Tier 2 Indian university) and scholarship demonstrate strong capability, while your work experience in the oil industry and family business highlights versatility and leadership, especially your management of a 25-30 person team at L&T. International exposure in Oman and Saudi Arabia adds value to your profile. Your extracurricular activities and volunteer work also showcase leadership and community involvement.

However, your GMAT Focus score of 695 is respectable. Clarify your career goals, showing how your MBA will help you transition from engineering to business development or consulting. You can take a look at one of our articles on “How to bring collinearity in your Post-MBA goals”. For example, articulate your long-term vision for your family business and how an MBA will equip you with the necessary skills in business development, finance, or strategy. While accolades from boarding school can showcase early leadership potential, admissions committees typically focus more on your recent and relevant experiences, especially from university and work. Still, mention any significant achievements if they support your narrative. Make sure to connect your technical skills to your future aspirations, and take on more leadership projects within your family business to strengthen your profile further.

Overall, you have a solid foundation but refining your GMAT, career goals, and extracurriculars will increase your competitiveness at ISB, LBS, INSEAD, and M7/T10 schools.

To get a more in-depth analysis and personalized feedback on how to best present your experiences, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in depth and give you specific pointers to strengthen your application and gauge your fit for B-school.

babyulikeit - some thoughts:

1. Your GMAT score is good. However, if you feel you can improve the GMAT score (based on your mocks/ expectations), it's worth another shot i.e. you want to put your best foot forward!

2. Your work-ex is interesting, given the mix of corporate & entrepreneurship backgrounds, and international exposure. It'd be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your achievements, career goals, and why MBA (now). The ECA's also present good angles for essays.

3. The switch to finance (IB/ PE) doesn't seem convincing, atleast based on the info you've provided. This would require more introspection/ brainstorming.

Hope this helps some.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Arvind
