Abrarbajwa1
Hi,
My name is Abrar, and I'm an MBA (graduated 2011) from LUMS, which is the top business school in Pakistan. I also happen to have a BSc Engineering degree from a local institute.
After my MBA I have worked for almost 5 years in the Pakistani industry in top companies and I'm doing quite well for myself. However, considering the security/visa issues and low international brand equity of LUMS, I have not been able to penetrate in the international job market. To that end, I have deiced to pursue another MBA, however pointless that might sound. Through my second MBA I intend to develop a strong network and enter the international job market preferably in finance areas. My post-MBA experience is in diverse set of areas including sales, business development, market research and supply chain.
I took my GMAT today and scored 710 (Q49 V38 IR8) which is slightly below my expectations, but I can live with it. My undergrad and MBA GPAs are both in the 3.5-3.7 range. Being realistic about my handicap of an existing MBA, an OK GMAT score and more than 6 years of experience, I'm not aiming for Harvard or Wharton. I'm specifically interested in one-year/one and a half-year programs with respectable rankings like CEIBS, HEC Paris, HK UST, IMD Switzerland, IE Business School etc.
I'd request everyone who has the time and motivation to provide me a profile feedback. I'll answer any questions that you might have.
Cheers!
Hi Arbar,
Many MBAs do a second MBA. Its common for people to do an MBA immediately after college in these parts of the world (India & Pakistan), when they don't have professional experiences to contribute to the discussion, and the MBA becomes an extended college.
With 4-5 years of work experience under your belt, you are better poised to relate class room concepts with your own experiences, and hence an MBA is more valuable at this point in time. You will need to communicate through your application that your past MBA has served its purpose and now your career goals and professional experience require you to upskill yourself,
only through an MBA.
Check out at the schools on your radar whether they are open to a second MBA degree. You can check their admissions FAqs or write to them if the info is not openly available. The European b-schools listed above have a profile evaluation program- after you submit your resume and other details they will either encourage you or discourage you to apply. You should make use of that feature to filter out schools at the outset.
You will also need to refine your career goals- sales & marketing; market research and supply chain are all different functions. while there may be some overlap or you may work with cross-functional teams on more than one of these, your goals can not be around all three. That comes across as confusing and shows you are not sure of what you want. In your case (6 years' substantial experience, MBA), b-schools will expect you to have crystal clarity on your career goals.
