Posting here for review, as recommended by isa.
I have been thinking & searching a lot about admissions though I need someone expert to review & suggest on my profile.
I wish to apply to Fall ' 2010. And, I have not appeared for GMAT yet. Planning to appear in August '09.
Profile :
1) 23, Male, Indian.
2) Educational Background : Undergrad - Bachelor of Engg. - Electronics & telecommunication.
From reputed college & university.
But, have frequently participated in other competitions.
Certificate in technical paper presentation.
Not so good academics. (have some personal reason). I don't know how to calculate GPA. But my final year % = 62%.
3) Work Experience : 1 Year. 2 Year at matriculation. Role = Design Engineer. Industry = Electronics. Company = Honeywell.
I have got some analytical work, cost analysis & reduction. Can elaborate about analytical skills required & challenged, in essays. Plus technical work. Found some problems in existing product of company, solved those myself. Will be Six Sigma certified professional by August.
4) Extra curricular / Leadership / Community : Pretty much stronger here. But don't have certificates.
Films/ novels/documentaries.
Managed national level competition at Undergrad college.
After competing undergrad had taken a break for 10 months. Worked for local "Lions club" here. As it's a rural area, suggested & implemented some innovative ideas to raise money. Also working on one idea which will be implemented in this October. The amount raised through these functions is substantial. Worked on some big projects.
Can show a lot of 'Leadership skills' here. Also, should be able to get Recommendation letter from a person with whom I have worked in Lions Club.
Have won 'Avatar' competition on one of the forum, this year. So can elaborate on marketing skills & creativity.
5) Goals : Career change.
Strategic Consulting & Entrepreneurship.
Company = McKinsey / Boston.
Focus on electronics industry.
I have a business plan ready & some business ideas. Did that myself. Can elaborate on that in essays.
6) Schools :
Not finalised. A lot depends on GMAT score. I am eying 750+ score as I am targeting only Top 20. If I get a good GMAT score, will even apply to H & W. I know they are out of reach but will apply just for the sake of it.
In any case, if I get less than 700 I don't think I will apply.
And, if you can ,please suggest school. I would like to enter a school (if I have a liberty to chose, that is ) which emphasizes more on exp. based learning & case study approach.
One more query :
- I am thinking of some reason to explain 'Why now ?' Probably something on line of 'more responsibility', & bigger role, I can't se myself in technical field etc. ?

I agree that you will need a 700+ GMAT score given that you are applying from a very competitive applicant pool and are on the lower end in terms of work experience. Even with a super-high GMAT, I don't think your profile is distinctive enough to give you a shot at Harvard or Wharton. For schools (besides HBS) that emphasize case studies, consider Virginia and U. of Western Ontario. Given your consulting goals, I think you will have a decent shot at the following top-ranked schools (which all place a significant percentage of their classes in consulting): Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Georgetown, Maryland, and Babson.
Regarding the Why Now question, just say that you've experienced enough to know that consulting is what you want to do so why wait to get the skils you need to make that career change.

Well, I guess a lot depends on my GMAT score then. I will do some more research, I guess I might have to drop the idea of applying this year. May be next year 3 years could be a good experience.
