MZ,

Thanks for the additional info. Your extra-curriculars are good, they just cross multiple themes so it would be important to work on that part of your story. Your approach sounds good! You are starting at a good time and if you work efficiently, you should be able to do all of those apps for round one. Your salary increase will speak to your performance of course, so that will help you.

I would recommend adding Sloan but maybe not dropping a reach school. It depends how much you can get done in the next couple months.

4 years when I join - (1 year in Mumbai, 3 years in Singapore)
2 years in a niche Financial Consultancy, worked with Bank Front Office teams in India and Singapore on valuation post global financial crisis
2 years - Thomson Reuters (Singapore) - in a pre- sales role, involved in revenue generation and interacting with business stake holders focusing more on buy-side

<<snip>>

My target schools are Booth, Columbia, Stern, LBS, Tuck and dream school is Wharton. Am I applying appropriately? Is there any other school I should look at?

Similar points but a slightly different way to look at it perhaps Mohnish:
  1. Great academic pedigree and cool GMAT. Check.
  2. Not so stellar GPA overcome with something - CFA/FRM. Check.
  3. ECs. Check.
  4. Non-common experience + international flavor. Check check.
  5. Long term goals. 'Ok'
  6. Immediate plan - not mentioned. THAT is going to be the critical part to figure out Mohnish. Asset Management may not necessarily happen right out of school - if not, how will you make things work? Think on that angle and then there's nothing stopping you.
  7. The nature of your work in the niche firm is not mentioned. It does not appear that your work at TR has got much to do with investing/asset management. Justifying the move and linking it to your post-MBA goal is critical. It will also be important to understand the brand of the financial consulting firm.
  8. In summary, yes, the profile looks cool, but areas that need to be sorted out. For reasons mentioned here, I will not hazard a gut-based guess on your school list, but definitely worth a re-look in terms of balancing it out a bit more.

Hope this sets you up.

Cheers,

Mohnish,

You have the makings of a great profile. I would like to get in more detail about your leadership stories before verifying the schools - but on a very high level - they seem alright. Your post-MBA goals, however, seem weak.

Regards,
Karthik

Hi Karthik,

Thanks for the evaluation.

Some more information on my profile. I recently retook the GMAT , managed to score 760 (99 percentile) with Q -51 (97 percentile) and V- 41 (94 percentile).
To elaborate more on the long term goals, I want to gain some experience in the investment management and my main interest is in macro investing. And in the long term I want to go solo and start my own fund (probably a bit too ambitious). In my current role, I have worked with C-level executives at banks, senior regulators and fund managers in South Asia. I have been involved in requirement gathering and also proposing solutions to solve their problems.

On the leadership and initiative front, I actively invest in Indian equities and started doing a bit in other Asian markets as well. I have raised a decent sum from a bunch of close friends and relatives and managing their investments for them. This has prompted me to make a long term career in the investment industry.
My main motivation to do MBA is not only learn investment but organization building and build a strong network.

As a part of my role, I have lead discussion with a Central Bank in the region and created a strong business case for senior executives within the company. As a result, this got some traction and a Global Head came down to Asia and joined the meetings with me. In college, I was a founding member of National Level Debate at the institute, the event, first of its kind saw over 200 participants and judges from over 4 countries. I received a special mention for my organizational skills for the effort. The National Debate has now become a regular event in the institute cultural calendar.

Based on the above information, could you please advise me?

Thanks,
MZ

Mohnish,

Go for it. You have a great shot - but just make sure you have one or two safes.
