Hi,
Please review my profile. Also let me know if there's a more appropriate place/topic to post this.
Demographic: Indian, Engineer, Male
Education: Bachelor's in aerospace from an old IIT (CGPA 8.26/10)
GMAT: 760 (Q51, V41)
Workex: 3.5 yrs in a financial markets role in a well-known Asian IB (working with the HK desk), have a promotion there and participated in a number of other activities at office as well for which i received an award, recently started working in a S&T role with an indian firm
Int'l exposure: Had a trip to HK during my time with previous firm , presented a research paper on behavioral finance in Taipei in final year of college
Extra Currics: Dramatics club head during college and won a number of case study/dramatics competition, currently have a blog on financial markets

I used the 'Profile Evaluator' tool and all M7 schools had 'very low' chances and remaning from top 10 had below average chances. Wanted to know what other factors might help tilt my chances.

Hi dentalmba123,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile seems well rounded. Talking about your work experience first, you must speak about your internship as a dentist, the practical experience you had, your international experience in Indonesia and your learnings. Moving further, I can see a change in career, so you need to be prepared for this topic as Adcoms will be curious to know about it. I suggest you explain this part thoroughly in your optional essays so that Adcoms can get a clear answer to your decision.

You have pretty good experience in your family business and as a Quality control Manager as well! You must showcase how your different roles have developed leadership qualities in you and how you have taken care of things when things went south. Adcoms should get the impression that the candidate has the necessary qualities and values and is ripe for an MBA at their college. As the profile is judged on a lot of parameters overall, the qualitative aspect is going to play a crucial role. Your essays should cover some important happenings of your life which shaped you in a very positive way such as handling a crisis or some habit you developed over time, etc. Speak about your startup, and your vision regarding it.

Your ECs are good, especially trekking. B-schools highly emphasize knowing a candidate beyond work. So, try and talk about the things for which you are truly passionate and can help Adcoms know a different side of yours.

Overall, you have a decent profile and if you work on your stories you have a good shot at US b-schools (with your GMAT score of 750+). To clear the clutter in your post-MBA goals, it's all right if you don't know the exact goal, but you should at least know the direction you've got to go. So brainstorm it, think about your interests and how an MBA is going to fill the gaps in your profile.

If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and try to get better clarity over your concern. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

I always wanted to do an MBA but had never set a timeline for it. But now I am thinking of doing it. I want to apply for 2022. Although I still do not have clarity on what Industry I want to go to Post-MBA, my preference is IB, Consulting, PM.
Is there a realistic chance to get into a Top MBA in the USA? What can I do to improve? Any other analysis or suggestions?

Hi friskymarkets,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Well, you've got a decent GPA with a solid GMAT score, and it shows your academic excellence. On the work front, I can see career progression, your ability to excel, and some achievements. You will need to dig deeper into your work and find the instances where you have contributed to the growth and development of the organisation and explain it thoroughly in your essays. You also have international exposure, you can talk about the research paper you presented to show your innovative side. Your ECs are good and show some leadership experience as well, do speak about it. Your current blog is related to your profession, and this shows your willingness to share your knowledge with others which brings the quality of collaborative leadership and ability to contribute and work with the community.

You've got a strong GMAT score, but it will depend more on the quality of your apps- how you craft stories and link the experiential dots in your profile so that Adcoms get to know your abilities, strength and potential. This will help them know what you're going to bring to the table.

Overall, you have a decent profile, but I would like to know some of the key aspects of your work experience and overall profile so that I can gauge your chances at b-schools.

If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and suggest a b-school that rightly fits your personality. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi DentalMBA,

You have already heard from experts, so without repeating what they have already said, I will just add my two cents.

This is to your question about : I still do not have clarity on what Industry I want to go to Post-MBA, my preference is IB, Consulting, PM.

You started as a dentist, switched to a family business in manufacturing, and then to eCommerce. The adcom of any b-school where you apply will want to know the reason/rationale behind these changes. IMO, if you pitch another change in your career trajectory, that would be cause for concern for the adcom as well as the career service team of the b-schools (as it would be for employers). You have no prior experience in IB or consulting as knowing that its most difficult to land a job in these industries, I will urge you to look further and deeper into your career goals.

The idea of a post MBA career goal is not to pick something that fancies you, but pick a career that best utilizes your skills, strength and work experience. You should do some soul searching to find what you really wish to do post MBA, what makes sense for you give what you have done so far. Also, ask yourself as an entrepreneur - will an MBA help at this point in time? In what way will it help?

All the best,

dentalmba123, Pleasure is all mine.

LBS is one of the most demanding business schools in the world and it does require strong acads, work experience and a great GMAT score. If you get a 720+, you have a very strong chance at the school (along with a good story, obviously).

Outside the USA you can also look at business schools such as INSEAD, HEC, IMD, ROTMAN etc. Dividing schools among reach, target and safety is a good strategy. It helps you have a safe ground.

Let's get on a call and discuss it in length ;) Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Shantanu,
Thanks for the advice. I will definitely hone in on what I should do Post MBA. Do you think LBS would be a stretch or it can be achieved? My preference is USA but due to visa issues, I am also researching for schools outside USA.
I will definitely contact you for a session .

Yes, dentalmba123, the 2-year course provides significantly greater networking opportunities both within the campus and outside and Internships offer the great opportunity to work closely with professionals in your field and to develop knowledge, competencies, and experience related directly to your career goals. Surely, we will gauge the perfect b-school of you.

Also, if you want to know in-depth about INSEAD and it's applications, feel free to look into this session. It's on 20th March and it's a personalised session to help you assess your chances.

Hope it helps! Let's catch up soon ;) Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Thank you, Shantanu. I am less inclined towards 1-year courses because I am switching careers. I want the comparatively slower pace of the 2-year course and the Internship. It's my understanding that the Internship is really helpful in placement. And yes, I do want a top school but I also want to be realistic in my chances.
I will definitely book a session with you in a few days.

Hi Tish2695,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Talking about your acads it’s good and your targeted GMAT score will surely define your academic excellence. On the work front, I can sense the leadership attributes in you and handling multiple projects will help you to bring diversity to your work profile. It’s very important for you to connect the dots right and bring a story that can talk impact loud and clear. Your community involvement is good as well! You can speak about your experience while working with the organization and how it helped to improve education for children. Also, talk about your role in developing this project.

Overall your profile is decent, but I am not able to see the impact right now. I would like to know about some major aspects of your work experience to give you a more realistic assessment.

I started a virtual education series for my department. Starting with just 50 participants, it has now increased to 500+ people benefiting from this. I'm the sole person running this right now but seeing the growth, my director said that I might get 1-2 persons under me to manage it.

Project wise, I'm a SME for the current project I'm working on.

Community wise: I used to occasionally lead few of the education trips to the nearby villages during my college time. I'm also involved in my Campus Alumni group (volunteering 4-5 hrs weekly)

Do they show impact?

Thanks,
Tisha

Tish2695, Yes that’s great. You can speak about your passion for educating people and the motivation behind starting the education series and how it has created an impact on your professional and personal life. You can talk about how you were managing this alone and your journey from 50 people to 500+ people benefiting from it.

Hope it helps! Let’s catch up soon :) Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Also, if you want to know in-depth about INSEAD and it's applications, feel free to look into this session. It's on 20th March and it's a personalised session to help you assess your chances.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and answer any of your concerns. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi,
Please review my profile.

c) Quality control Manager on a part-time basis at a different Manufacturing company. ( Responsibilities included - Testing the finished goods, getting Govt ISI License, Giving recommendations on how to adjust quality).

GMAT - Not given.
Mock GMAT - 660.
Aiming for 720+ (preferably 750+).

Hello dentalmba123 and thank you for sharing. Since you want to apply for 2022, I imagine some feedback will still be useful here!

As an Indian male, you come from a competitive applicant pool and will have you work cut out for you to differentiate yourself from other candidates. Aiming for a strong GMAT around 750 will certainly help enhance your candidacy.

That said, being a dentist sets you apart from the crowd to some extent. Dentists can do well, and Personal MBA Coach has worked with dentists before. The key here is to show leadership.

You will also want to have clear career goals laid out when applying. Are you planning to apply in Round 1? While schools will not hold you to what you write in your applications, you should generally be decisive. Personal MBA Coach helps applicants successfully articulate their MBA goals as part of our comprehensive services.

If you’re looking to hire a consultant, feel free to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com to discuss how we can help set you up for success for top US b-schools!

Best,
Personal MBA Coach
