I am applying for the second round deadline for GSB MBA.
I have a couple of questions with Activity & Interests page: - I have been working on developing my ancestral village on a rolling basis for the past 3 years. It is not part of any organization/ NGO. Its an effort that me and my family members have taken to give back to the village. Eg of the work I have done: Created a low cost automation system used during harvest cycle to improve post processing of crops more efficient. Built it on my own and is going to be used by several farmers in coming seasons. Raised investments to improve school and public place infrastructure. Working with villagers and couple of other family members on efforts to improve land yield. Also in 2006, I worked with priests, village panchayat and grand mother to eliminate caste system in the village. Not sure if I should include this in the activities section. I also dont have proper track of no. of hours I have spent/week. Its been concentrated effort and then nothing for sometime. I have also mentioned it in passing my contribution to the village in the main essay.
Also I play in amatuer cricket league. I have played for several teams and leagues for several years. But because I have moved around a bit, I have changed teams. I have been the Vice Captain of my latest team but since I have been here for only a year, its not been long. Is it worth writing about this?
Another question is with the Optional Question 2: Tell us about a time within the last three years when your background influenced your participation at work or school. I have addressed a bit of this in the main essay of what motivates me and why. Should I still use this space to repeat it and probably give a little more context?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers

Hi. I think I will start with question 2 - ideally, you would put your most impactful item here. However, I would not put the same item as you touched on in another essay. It makes it repetitive and makes you sound pretty limited. Of course if you can avoid doing that in your story then for sure but everone else will likely have 2 separate cases/stories/situations they are referring to. The reason they asked about is because they want to learn more about you, not see how well you answer questions
As to #1, you want to show what you are passionate about what you have achieved and what you value. Again, the school is learning about you and one way to differentiate some of these things is to say minor misc interests but that depends on a few things. If you have 15 activities then it is really a wide net and you clearly are not going deep in any of them but it is helpful to show depth. If you don't have much, then by all means put it in! I don't see how it would help you get into GSB... but it will show where you would put in the time so you can potentially measure it based on the time you invested even if you did not progress too much.
