Let, Actual score = x

score After review = 1.5x

Now, x = 40% of examination score = 0.4*Exam score

i.e. Examination score = 2.5x

Passing Marks = 1.5x+35

Also, Passing marks + 7 = 1.5x + 20% of 1.5x = 1.2*1.5*x

i.e. (1.5x+35) + 7 = 1.8x

i.e. o.3x = 42

i.e. x = 140

i.e. Passing score = 1.5x+35 = 210+35 = 245

Total Exam score = 2.5x = 2.5*140 = 350

% passing marks \(= \frac{245}{350}*100 = 70\)

Assume max score = x
Her score, S = 0.4x

1.5*1.2 *S - 1.5S = (35+7)

0.3S = 42

S = 0.4x= 140; 0.1x =35

140*1.5 +35 = 0.4x*1.5 +0.1 x = 0.7x


The percentage score needed for passing the examination is = 0.7*100=70

let max marks - 100 x
so scored is 40x and increase is 40x*1.2 ; 60x
this 60x+35 = (60x*1.2-7)
solve for x = 7/2
so max marks ; 100*7/2 ; 350 and passing marks = 60*7/2 + 35 ; 245
Passing % ; 245/350 ; 70%

We can let n = the total available marks of the exam and p = the passing mark of the exam. We can create the equations (note that a 50% increase from 40% is 60% and a further 20% increase is 72%):

0.6n = p - 35

and

0.72n = p + 7

Subtracting the first equation from the second, we have:

0.12n = 42

n = 350

Substituting 350 into n in the first equation, we have:

0.6(350) = p - 35

210 = p - 35

245 = p

Since p = 245 and n = 350, one needs to score 245/350 = 0.7 = 70% to pass the exam.

Answer: D
