Recent surveys indicate that eating a nutritious diet and exercising regularly are priorities for most people in the United States, like those of most other countries.

Meaning :
Recent surveys indicate that
eating a nutritious diet and exercising regularly are priorities for most people in the United States, like those of most other countries.

Evaluate Given Sentence:

X & Y are priorities for most people in US, Like those ( most people) of most other countries.

Sentence presents a comparison between, People & Gerunds. Hence The sentence appears to be illogical.
& As underlined above, "Most people" is the antecedent of Pronoun "those" in the underlined part in the given sentence.

POE :

(A) like those of most other countries
wrong for above mentioned reasons.
(B) as those of most other countries
As + Noun = Role/Function = As People, Exercising & Eating are priorities; illogical

(C) just as most people of other countries do

Comparing Action nouns with Most people in most countries; Illogical

(D) as do most people of other countries

Similar to the above option C

(E) as they are for most people in other countries

Here we go.

As They ( Exercising & Eating ) are for most people in other countries, Exercising & Eating are priorities for people in US

Correct.

First, lets identify all incorrect options-

A is wrong because like is used for comparing nouns.

B is wrong because of non-sensical comparisons (comparing exercise and diet to people)

C is wrong (same reason as B)

D also wrong

E is right, correct comparisons and error free.

Ans:E

We are comparing behaviours of Americans to behaviours of people from other countries.
If we keep this in mind, only answer choice E seems attractive and compares apples to apples.

Official Explanation :

The sentence incorrectly compares a verb phrase, are priorities for most people in the United States, to a noun phrase, those of most other countries. Actions should only be compared to other actions, so this sentence is not parallel: eliminate (A).

Choice (B) merely changes the comparison word to as, it does not correct the error, so eliminate this answer. While (C) contains a verb phrase, the construction are priorities for most people....as most people of other countries do is not parallel, so eliminate this choice.

Choice (D) contains a similar construction: are priorities for most people....as do most people is also not parallel, so eliminate it.

Choice (E) with the parallel construction are priorities for most people....as they are for most people, is correct.
