Original sentence: Results of a recent study suggest that the financial management difficulties that women experience are slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than what men experience.

(A) what men experience
This choice has dual meaning in its comparison: not only it may compare the financial management difficulties that women experience with what men experience, but also it may illogically compare bankruptcy filings with what men experience.

(B) men’s experience would
This choice compares the financial management difficulties that women experience with men’s experience. Though the comparison can be considered technically parallel, the meaning implied is non-sensical: men’s experience would likely to lead to bankruptcy filings?? In addition, the use of future tense will (be) makes more sense than would (be).

(C) are those that men experience
CORRECT ANSWER. This choice unambiguously and logically compares the financial management difficulties that women experience are... with (the financial management difficulties) that men experience are... The word those has clear antecedent, which is the financial management difficulties. Overall, this choice is grammatically correct and properly conveys the intended meaning.

(D) financial struggles of men
This choice has dual meaning in its comparison: not only it may compare the financial management difficulties that women experience with financial struggles of men, but also it may illogically compare bankruptcy filings with financial struggles of men.

(E) men’s financial struggles do
This choice compares the financial management difficulties that women experience with men’s financial struggles. However, the use of verb do is incorrect and should be replaced with the verb are.

Answer is (C)

Results of a recent study suggest that the financial management difficulties that women experience are slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than what men experience.

Here the sentence tests parallelism due to the presence of ‘than’.

Interpretation: The sentence says that ‘financial management difficulties’(Subject) experienced by women ‘lead’(verb) to filings more than ‘financial management difficulties’ experienced by men.

Going by the original sentence it means that “financial management difficulties experienced by women lead to filings more than experience of men”. ‘Experience of men’ is different than financial management difficulties and can’t be compared. If at all they are compared it would lead to a vague meaning i.e. ‘experience of men not the difficulties would less likely lead to filings’ slightly changing the meaning.

(A) what men experience – WRONG. As discussed above.
(B) men’s experience would – WRONG. As discussed above.
(C) are those that men experience – CORRECT. The sentence makes sense in that it correctly compares financial management difficulties experienced by men to those that women experience.
(D) financial struggles of men – WRONG. This one takes meaning of sentence to another level. Compares men’s financial struggles(may be personal) to financial management difficulties.
(E) men’s financial struggles do – WRONG. Similar to (D).
Hope this helps.

IMO Answer(C).

this question is seeking correct comparison . the comparison is between the difficulties that women experience and difficulties that men experience are (likely to lead to ..)

(A) what men experience
with no 'are' , the comparison is between more likely leading to bankruptcy fillings than difficulties men experience. So difficulties women experience lead to bankruptcy or difficulties men experience

(B) men’s experience would
difficulties that women experience are more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than men's experience would lead to ; difficulties of women are compared with men's experience.

(C) are those that men experience
are difficulties that men experience, this correctly reflect the needed comparison

(D) financial struggles of men
wrong comparison. difficulties women experience lead more likely to lead to bankruptcy than financial struggles of men

(E) men’s financial struggles do
you need an action verb to reference for 'do' which is not in the previous half of the sentence, also it lacks parallelism to use do

C is the answer

(C) are those that men experience
The financial difficulties of women are compared to those of men, correct parallelism here,
(D) financial struggles of men

(E) men’s financial struggles do
not parallel to the financial difficulties.

Another confusing one :hurt: ...Here is my thought process...
Quote:
Results of a recent study suggest that the financial management difficulties that women experience are slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than what men experience.

ANALYSIS:
......difficulties that women experience ARE MORE LIKELY ......THAN what men experience

Options prefixed with X are discarded

X (A) what men experience
>> It sounds like BANKRUPTCY IS more likely that what men experience... Also, WHAT cannot be used as a pronoun to refer to difficulties... can it?.... DISCARDED

X (B) men’s experience would
>> difficulties that women experience ..... cannot be compared to men's experience... they must be compared to difficulties that men experience..... DISCARDED

(C) are those that men experience
>> THIS SEEMS CORRECT. difficulties ... are more likely than are those.... here those is correctly referring to difficulties. so difficulties are compared to difficulties correctly.

X (D) financial struggles of men
>> It gives illogical meaning that BANKRUPTCY is more likely than STRUGGLES... it is not clear whether comparision is between struggle and bankruptcy or between struggle and difficulties... DISCARDED

X (E) men’s financial struggles do
>> difficulties that women experience ..... cannot be compared to men's struggles... they must be compared to difficulties that men experience..... DISCARDED

ANSWER: C

financial management difficulties that women experience has been wrongly compared with what men experience.

We will be looking for two rectifications :

1.) The comparison should be between
a.) financial management difficulties that women experience
b.) financial management difficulties that men experience.

2.) Also, just like likely to lead in the first part, a verb will be required in the second part.

(A) what men experience - wrong comparison
(B) men’s experience would - yet again no reference to difficulties
(C) are those that men experience - those correctly refers to difficulties, and are is the correct verb for comparison
(D) financial struggles of men - no verb as discussed in error no 2
(E) men’s financial struggles do - do is the wrong verb for comparison here

What is being compared here is "financial difficulties" that women experience to those [financial difficulties] that men experience. Option C clearly does great job in comparing those two items.

A) what men experience - "what" in GMAT means "the things that", so sentence would read "difficulties that women experience are slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than the things that [what] men experience" - the original sentence does not convey the proper meaning as it compares difficulties with some things that men experience. Eliminate

B) men’s experience would - a complete mess with these "are" and "would" and "men's". Let's insert this into the sentence to get "financial management difficulties that women experience are ...... men's experience would". It compares financial difficulties with men's experience. B is out

C) are those that men experience - Nice parallel structure. "financial management difficulties that women experience ARE slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than ARE those [financial difficulties] that men experience". Our winner

D) financial struggles of men - can be eliminated for vague comparison because it can either mean: financial struggles of men are also likely to result in bankruptcy fillings
or
financial struggles of women are likely to lead to either bankruptcy fillings or financial struggles of men.

E) men’s financial struggles do - I don't like E because it introduces new verb "do". Sentence would read as following "financial management difficulties that women experience ARE slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than men's financial struggles DO". Not parallel. Besides, if we are literal, that "do" must be referring to nearest verb that is "lead". So "financial management difficulties that women experience ARE slightly more likely to lead to bankruptcy filings than men's financial struggles lead [do]" a little bit nonsense. Eliminate

My answer is C

Subject of the sentence is financial management difficulties, therefore last part must also deal with difficulties.

(A) what men experience - absense of referal to the subject, therefore out
(B) men’s experience would - The sentence talks about real situation, whereas "would" implies hypotetical situation, out
(C) are those that men experience -Correct option as it correctly refers to subject
(D) financial struggles of men Lacks "are" verb to indicate role of the financial strugles
(E) men’s financial struggles do - Incorrect parallelism, need to use "are" instead of "do"

(A) what men experience
-There is comparison in this sentence ," than" is the comparison indicator. So the sentence requires two compared its to be parallel.
Financial management difficulties that women face are slightly more resulting into X is compared to Financial management difficulties that men face. Clearly this option has comparison error as it compares "what men experience." use of " what " also is not parallel in construction, So Eliminate A

(B) men’s experience would
- Here financial management difficulties that women face are slightly more resulting into X is compared to men's experience would. Wrong comparison and structure not parallel. So Eliminate B

(C) are those that men experience
CORRECT . Here financial management difficulties that women experience is compared to those that men experience . Also construction becomes parallel with usage of " that".

(D) financial struggles of men
- Financial management difficulties of women compared with financial struggles of men. Structure is not parallel . So eliminate D

(E) men’s financial struggles do
- Structure not parallel. More over meaning is changed. Financial management difficulties that women experience is compared to financial struggles men do. so incorrect.

Dream it! Achieve it!

women are more likely to lead to Bankruptcy fillings than (A) what men experience
Means women are more likely to lead to what men experience ( changes meaning)

Not parallel to bankruptcy fillings
B) men’s experience would -( would is past tense) but rest of the sentence is not
D) financial struggles of men

E) men’s financial struggles do--financial struggles are compares to bankruptcy fillings

We are left with C
C) are those that men experience

(A) what men experience
(B) men’s experience would
(C) are those that men experience
(D) financial struggles of men
(E) men’s financial struggles do

Solution:
This sentence compares the financial management difficulties that women experience to the financial management difficulties that men experience as the structure being compared should always be parallel.

In A and B financial management are being compared to difficulties.
D and E are both awkward .

C is the clear winner.

(B) men’s experience would.Incorrect.Ambigous. financial management difficulties are being compared to difficulties and not financial management difficulties that men experience
(C) are those that men experience .CorrectThis sentence compares the financial management difficulties that women experience to the financial management difficulties that men experience as the structure being compared should always be parallel. Also here the verb 'are " has to be present to make sense.

This Question tests the concept of comparison. Financial management difficulties that women experience are being compared to the financial management difficulties that men experience.

(A) what men experience- Incorrect. What is creating ambiguity here. we don't exactly know which experience of men is "what" referring to. it should refer to the financial management difficulties that men experience however it's not clear. let's look for a better choice.
(B) men’s experience would-Incorrect. men's experience is a possessive noun making experience as the subject. it should be financial management difficulties that men experience
(C) are those that men experience- Correct. those here is correctly referring back to the financial difficulties men experience hence there is no ambiguity and conveys a clear meaning. it also maintains the parallel structure.
(D) financial struggles of men - Incorrect. experience faced by women is compared to the experienced faced by men. the parallel structure isn't correct. Also, Financial struggles are different than management of financial difficulties. This completely distorts the meaning .
(E) men’s financial struggles do - Incorrect. same possessive noun as we say in B, Also the comparison is not clear in this sentence. same meaning error as we saw in D

Hence the correct answer must be C
