Dear Anjoom,

Assuming you are able to spin a compelling story capturing the essence of your professional experience across multiple startups, your score of 710 is very competitive for all the schools you have shortlisted barring LBS. However, I believe you can be a great addition to the LBS cohort with your background in one of the hottest sectors globally, Fintech. Hence, I would suggest that you start preparing for the apps of all the schools and in parallel make another attempt to crack the elusive 730-750 range in GMAT.

Also, an Indian Male Engineer working in the field of Software Development / Services is typically the most represented pool of applicants in any Business school. Since you are neither from an engineering background nor did you work in Software Development, you can easily distinguish yourself from the pool.

Based on the choice of schools, its evident that you want to stay in the field of finance and make a long-term career in the sector itself. If this assumption holds true, you will need to bring it across in your goals essay the specific reasons because of which you want to pursue an MBA and the career trajectory you have in mind. Do make a conscious effort to showcase the transferrable skillsets from your past and present experience you will leverage in future roles.

Feel free to reach out to me at arijit.biswas@crackadmission.com in case you want to have a detailed chat regarding your candidature or want to brainstorm on the content of your application.

Cheers and Best of Luck!

Before I start, I know this is one of the most repeated questions in the forum, yet I feel I should specify my case and take advice.

Profile:
    Indian,
    Non-Engineer,
    Male,
    Tier 1 College,
President of the College Music Society,
    College Football Team member,
Led an admission orientation initiative that helps students from backwards communities to secure admissions to top colleges in India,
Overall 6+ years of experience. All in fintech startups. An early member of a startup that became a unicorn recently. Currently working at a fintech platform that democratizes real estate investments,
Held Leadership positions and had multiple promotions,
Volunteering with a women empowerment organization,
Attending a pre-MBA program by one of the top programs in this category.

GMAT Story:
First Attempt in Apr, 2022. Scored 710 (Q47, V40) IR 5, AWA 5 (GMATWhiz, OG)
Second Attempt in Jul, 2022. Scored 680 (Q47, V36) IR 8, AWA - (Cancelled) (GMAT Club, OG)
    Target score: 740+

Potential Downsides:
Low GPA: Was at a 40-50th percentile.
Highly represented cohort: I have seen in many forums that as an Indian, this score might not be considered good enough considering the applicant pool.

Schools, applying to:
    Saïd Business School (Oxford)
University of Cambridge Judge Business School
    London Business School
    Imperial College Business School
    Warwick Business School
    Alliance Manchester Business School

Should I retake the GMAT one last time? Or is it better to focus on my other application processes for R1?

Hi Anjoom,

Thanks for writing in.

Considering your overall profile, you stand a good chance at your target schools. Having said that, for schools such as LBS, Cambridge, and Oxford, we would definitely recommend an improved score. Something in excess of 730 would give you a very good chance.

All the best!

Hi Anjoom,

It can be tough but not impossible. Your GPA is something that is written in stone and you cannot change. You have a GPA that is a bit below the average class statistics. Your GMAT is decent but it can be tough when compared to the rest of the applicant pool. But it’s just not the numbers game that can convert you to target schools. An optional essay can be a good place to address this and tell some reasons that affected your performance. You need to showcase the achievements that you have received during the tenure of your career. You need to showcase your leadership qualities which is one of the most important qualities that B schools look into the applicant. You have to represent yourself in a very unique way through your essays.

However, if you're looking for a scholarship to pursue an MBA it is suggested to split your schools to apply in R1 and R2 (while attempting for GMAT again). You can apply for Warwick, Manchester, and Imperial in R1 and apply to Oxford, Cambridge, and LBS in R2 by appearing for GMAT again.
